Jen Shyu's Nine Doors Jan 4

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

Jen Shyu’s Nine Doors — a solo ritual music drama

Jen Shyu: Composition, vocals, Taiwanese moon lute, Korean gayageum and soribuk drum, Japanese biwa, piano, dance, sound design, choreography, percussion

{Nine Doors} was inspired by the loss of Shyu’s friend Sri Joko Raharjo “Cilik,” who died with his wife and infant son in an automobile accident at the age of 30. Raharjo was a master of the Javanese art of shadow puppetry called wayang kulit. His 6-year-old daughter, who survived the crash, is the central character in Shyu’s piece. Time stops as she encounters powerful female legends—from the Wehali Kingdom of Timor to the Korean folkloric myth of Baridegi, the mother of all shamans—who become her guides. A mysterious phone booth in a gardener’s yard in Otsuchi, Japan, which has become a comfort to the families who lost loved ones in the 2011 Tsunami, also enters into the story, with the gardener having given Shyu permission to compose a piece with his poetry titled “Phone of the Wind” (“Kaze no Denwa”). The work reflects the parallels that exist between life and death, different cultures, and the importance of empathy over destructive assumptions that divide humanity.

Charming Disaster/ Aaron Frazer /Lord Youth Jan 6

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

Brooklyn-based musical duo Charming Disaster was formed in 2012 by Ellia Bisker (of Sweet Soubrette and Funkrust Brass Band) and Jeff Morris (of Kotorino). Inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the noir storytelling of Raymond Chandler, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret, they write songs that tell stories, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playful sensibility.

    AARON FRAZER

Aaron Frazer is a multi-instrumentalist living in brooklyn, known for his soul and hard gospel productions. When not singing behind the drums, Aaron also performs selections from decades of private-press country and outside folk.

    LORD YOUTH

Lord Youth is a noir folk rock band based out of Queens, NY. It began as a recording project in an old Copehagen attic once inhabited by hundreds of Danish pigeons. If you listen closely, you can hear the crunch of feathers underneath the musicians’ feet.

    Rupe Shearns SOLD OUT 1/13

    7:30 doors $15.00 adv/$18.00 at door

    https://venuepilot.co/events/15552/orders/new

A decade after releasing his first album with Earl Greyhound, singer and guitar player Matt Whyte, now known as Rupe Shearns, released his first collection of original music on 10/20/17. The album was 4 years in the making and prominently features members of Grizzly Bear and Inara George from The Bird and The Bee. A distinct departure from Earl Greyhound’s pared down and aggressive brand of rock, Rupe Shearns’ music is decidedly more layered and varied from song to song; at its most gentle paying subtle tribute to Pink Floyd’s “Meddle”, and at its loudest, drawing more overtly from Joe Jackson’s “Stepping Out”.

In the intervening years between Earl Greyhound and Rupe Shearns, Matt has been working as a composer and producer out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn and touring as multi instrumentalist and singer with Joan as Policewoman. In addition, Matt performs samba and Bossa Nova music in Portuguese every other week in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Ali Dineen and Feral Foster Jan 20

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

New York City born-and-raised musicians Feral Foster and Ali Dineen join forces to bring you folk, blues, gospel and county that will keep the fire stoked this winter! They will perform solo sets of their original folk music, as well as a duet performance of their favorite gospel, blues and country songs.

Feral has been gigging in New York, across the country and in Europe for the past 10 years, capturing the imagination and attention of listeners with his impassioned singing and powerful songwriting. Foster draws from the deep wellspring of early blues, country, and jazz to tell contemporary, human stories, making for music that feels wellworn and strikingly fresh at the same time. He has become wellknown in the roots music scene for establishing, curating, and performing at Jalopy’s weekly Wednesday “Roots n’ Ruckus” review, which has become a premiere showcase for new and established talent.

Ali Dineen is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist based in New York City. She performs original music as well as songs from U.S. folk traditions, incorporating historical and sociopolitical commentary into her shows. She believes in the power of narrative to connect people to their histories, themselves and one another. Ali’s music is personal and also political, and explores the intersections of personal stories with larger histories. She has given her musical talents to various projects including the Bread and Puppet Theater. She performs regularly in New York City.

    Jamie Saft solo Jan 25

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Admission

a record release event:  JAMIE SAFT – SOLO A GENOVA

    RareNoise RNR088

Jamie Saft’s first solo album is an unrestrained experience, taking an eclectic mix of material – jazz, rock, pop, blues, modernist classical, and a few Saft originals – and creating an hour’s coherent listening without sacrificing any of the variety. In other words, some choices might seem odd on paper but aurally, it works, and then some.

The reasoning behind the choices goes back to the original idea for a solo concert in 2007 in Italy. Saft wanted, “…to present American music as an example of positive, forward thinking art – …art that resisted hatred and negativity, art that promoted a positive path forward…”

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

According to John Schaefer of NPR’s Soundcheck, Katie Mullins is a Brooklyn-based “singer-songwriter — just not in the way you might think.” Author Paul Rome describes Katie’s performances as, “Clear, direct, intimate, generous–a warm, powerful voice over fluid guitar patterns. The audience leans forward drawn in by the warmth, happily alert, actively seeking wisdom yet somewhat hypnotized. One is part of a ritual that feels ancient or perhaps timeless. Storytelling. There a moment in every song that is never precisely as one expects.”

On Allegra Krieger:  A considered, experimental, and emotional approach to folk which sees her incorporate self-reflective lyrics, avant-garde musical flourishes, and an approach to melody that is reminiscent, but not derivative, of Joni Mitchell. There is a world-weariness and weight to her music that some musicians spend a lifetime trying to imbue into their music.” – Jamie Coughlan (of Overblown)

LYENN’s highly acclaimed debut ‘The Jollity Of My Boon Companion’ came out in 2009, with special guests  Shazad Ismaily, Marc Ribot and Joel Hamilton.

In 2011 the beautiful EP ‘Vowels Made First’ was released as a prelude to a forthcoming new album. In the meantime Fred Lyenn Jacques has toured the world extensively as bass player for Mark Lanegan.  In 2016 V2 Records released LYENN’s second album ‘Slow Healer’. The album was recorded in Iceland, the perfect canvas for his fragile music, and led to collaborations with Mum’s cellist Gyda Valtisdoter and drummer Julian Sartorius. LYENN’s music sounds pure and honest. Lucid tones are held together by a sparse use of instruments, while his remarkable voice ranges from angelic whispers to intense daemonic shouts.

Relatives – Ian Davis and Katie Vogel – met upon arrival to New York City in 2007 and have been singing and writing together since. Over the years, they have been paring down and turning inwards, exploring what can be done with less.

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

In the fall of 2012, composer and pianist Michael Coleman (Beep!, CavityFang, Chris Cohen, tUnE-yArDs) began recording himself alone in his studio in Oakland, CA. Out of this small room, filled with casio keyboards, curious synths, abandoned percussion and disreputable guitars, Michael Rocketship emerged. The name captures the uninhibited and slightly mischievous nature of Coleman’s unpredictable pop songwriting, which calls to mind the best of Deerhoof, Captain Beefheart, SMiLE-era Beach Boys, and acid-balladeer Rodd Keith. The band is ever shifting and the music changes with every new incarnation. The lineup for Jan 19th includes Michael Rocketship (synth and voice), Nick Lyons (sax), Kurt Kotheimer (upright bass) and Shahzad Ismaily (percussion).

Lau Noah (Spain 1994) is a Brooklyn based storyteller. She has recently found the deepest way to express her tales in the harmonic tapestry that a guitar and a voice, intertwined, create. Through several musical influences and four languages that bring widely diverse qualities to the music, Noah travels from multi instrumentalist, film scorer, composer to writer, painter and teacher with the endeavor of using Art as a shelter where the colors of the dark and the light naturally reconcile.

    Zosha Warpeha
Zosha is a violinist, vocalist, and songwriter whose music draws inspiration from a variety of folkloric and improvised traditions. Her collaboration with drummer Connor Parks explores space, time, and resonance through long form improvisations of hardanger fiddle, voice, and percussion, spinning together songs that are all at once meditative and energetic, contemplative and whimsical.

Zosha Warpeha – hardanger fiddle and voice
    Connor Parks – drums

    Gaya Feldheim-Schorr

Born in the heart of Tel-Aviv, jazz musician and vocalist Gaya Feldheim-Schorr was introduced to music at home. Her mother, a multi-media artist, brought her up to be highly receptive to diversity and acquainted with a multitude of musical genres and eras, all coming to form the musical fiber of her artistic palate. Drawing from her vast repertoire and wide ranging skillset, Gaya is creating her own space in the shifting and unrelenting flow of the New York jazz scene. Through her unique tastes and her deft arranging skills, Gaya creates projects that both defy classification and celebrate great musical traditions. She takes on various musical matter from pieces she has felt connected to at different points in her life, spanning classical, jazz, singer songwriter, and indie rock, and reimagines them both through new orchestration, arrangement and improvisation.  Her current project presents an arch surrounding a recurring theme of Benjamin Britten’s choral work “A Ceremony of Carols”, with jazz standards, Israeli folk, and contemporary songwriter pieces interspersed.

Blurring the boundaries between sound art, chamber music, and the music on that show, We the Gleaners forges a great trip with the new world of events that transpired.

Featuring Dana Lyn on the East River, Kyle Sanna on Sunday, and Matt Kanelos on a flight to the new world, We the Gleaners are pleased to announce their plans.

After touring Canada for several years and releasing four albums with alt-folk outfit Fish & Bird, Taylor brought his clawhammer banjo, his guitar, and his rich baritone voice to New York City to sing songs about things that are hard to say and to make unexpected juxtapositions seem like the most natural thing in the world.

The windfalls, the crises, the concerts, the chance encounters – she’ll sprint through them all, collecting burs. This is work in the tradition of Dylan or Townes Van Zandt”  Sean Michaels, The Globe And Mail

“The balance between the composed and improvised is finely wrought, making the line between them virtually invisible, with the only giveaway being larger structure which is uses the familiar recapitulation. The cumulative effect…is a quiet intensity, almost an eavesdropping of a private conversation. Emotionally complex while being aurally transparent, the music ends up feeling like an long-gone acquaintance who has been missed, but whose newly-found presence is immediately comfortable. Strange, but wonderful.”
    – All About Jazz (Bud Kopman)

“Active since 2012, Color Wheel creates a world of sound in the moment that is continously in movement, looking simultaneously to the past and to the future. While rooted in improvised music, jazz and classical music, the music recalls at times Ornette Coleman, John Cage, Paul Bley or Anton Webern. Color Wheel released their first record on Skirl Records in February of 2017.”

    Clebs / Fieldings Mar 29

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Fieldings is Brooklyn-based (Australian born) producer/songwriter Lucinda Hearn, with Paul Weintrob and Alex Kirkpatrick. Fielding’s latest album Soft Tissue explores vulnerability through gauzy dream pop: imagined death, anxiety, skin, memories of being a kid, seeking oblivion to numb. Its textures wash over and pull at you, from the tense icy piano of Northern Lights, to the scatter-fuck fragility of Soft Jewels.

Soft Tissue was written and recorded between fall 2015 and summer 2017, while songwriter Lucinda Hearn found a new home and new band in NYC. It’s woozy with the loneliness and uncertainty of that time, only showing its soft underbelly from around corners.

“beautifully enveloping, equally endearing as what came before while offering something altogether more immersive … fog slowly swallowed by the brightness of the day” – Gold Flake Paint
“a gorgeously tasteful slice of dream pop that we haven’t been able to stop listening to all week.” – Eucalypt
“a Jazz-influenced journey, its angles are sharp, its turns unexpected and its mind open” – Autumn Roses

CLEBS is the mutant brainchild of singer Emilie Weibel and producer/drummer Jason Nazary. A thorough melodicism and paranormal sonic connections make for an uncanny musical experience.

The Inbetweens  (Mike Gamble- guitar • Noah Jarrett- upright bass • Conor Elmes- drums) emerged in the summer of 2002, from the roots of improvisation, curiosity, and like minds. They collectively weave melodies and vamps into intricate spiderwebs of rhythm, circling each other like predators seeking the same prey. Before they were the tweens, they lived in Boston, where they each spent time gigging and studying jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music with gurus such as Bob Moses, George Garzone, John Lockwood, and John Abercrombie. Since then Guitarist Mike Gamble, bassist Noah Jarrett, and drummer Conor Elmes have been performing bi-monthly in NYC and subsequently touring the Northeast, Midwest, New Orleans, and Europe. As a trio, they have put out two self-released albums, and two critically acclaimed albums “Quantum Cowboy” and “Out on A Limb” on Madison WI’s Layered Music.

Playing together over the past 7 years in various projects, musical settings and with collective-trio KADAWA, Tal Yahalom and Almog Sharvit present a new project which follows their sudden obsession with the music of English singer-songwriter Nick Drake. Drawn to the instrumental potential of Drake’s music, with its rich melodic/harmonic vocabulary, powerful moods and engaging storytelling, the duo performs new interpretations of his music, arranged especially for this instrumentation. They seek to maximize and explore different textural, sonic and improvisational possibilities while treating these songs as open-ended compositions.
    Tal Yahalom – Guitar
    Almog Sharvit – Double Bass

New York-based Israeli guitarist and vocalist Dida has a particular talent for storytelling. Whether it be a jazz standard, a scorching blues number, an old country ballad, or a heartfelt original “Dida sings in a voice sometimes playful, warm, resonant, no frills. She sings the words, giving them their meaning, their weight, with perfect diction and charm.” (Jazz Hot, France)

Allegra Krieger, Sam Tallmadge & Elliott Skinner May 4

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

“A considered, experimental, and emotional approach to folk which sees her incorporate self-reflective lyrics, avant-garde musical flourishes.“ Allegra Krieger is currently based in New York performing in the city with her ever rotating band of sensitive & diverse musicians. She also often travels across the country to play in tiny bar rooms & sleep in her car. Her first record Circles was released October 2017, and her follow up is in the works.

Sam Talmadge is a songwriter, fingerpicker, and occasional piano player living in Boston Massachusetts. Drawing from the guitar styles of John Hurt and Elizabeth Cotten, the compositional rigor of L.V. Beethoven, and the lyricism and narrative of a long list of writers, Sam has fused these influences together into a new kind of song; compact, sincere, and at times, hilarious. The subject matter in Sam’s songwriting ranges from unrequited love to fairy tales of climate change denial to the cathartic release of vomiting on a Sunday morning. In addition to writing and performing solo in Boston and along the east coast, Sam is a co-founder of the Boston based folk-quartet Ruthless Moon and the guitarist in the new rock band, DOGART.

Soul/folk singer and songwriter Elliott skinner is 1 third of New-York based trio Thirdstory. After years of rising with the band, their first album, Cold Heart is out now as an ode to heartbreak and growth

David J (of Bauhaus) and Paul Wallfisch May 5

    7:30 Doors $12 advance/$15.00 at door

    https://venuepilot.co/events/17438/orders/new

    artist: Alexis Price

For this intimate solo acoustic performance David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, The Jazz Butcher) will be playing a career spanning set interwoven with stories and quite possibly the odd quip or two.

A founder member of one of the highly influential and revered BAUHAUS. Bauhaus spearheaded the post-punk Alternative music scene of the early ‘80’s with a string of innovative albums and singles, including, for many, perhaps their defining moment, a song that is ranked as a classic and feasibly the pinnacle of the entire Gothic scene and beyond, the nine minute plus epic slab of industrial dub that is ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’, featuring the lyrics of David J.

Two years after the demise of Bauhaus in1983, David regrouped with two of his former Bauhaus band mates, guitarist, Daniel Ash and drummer, Kevin Haskins to form the hugely successful Love And Rockets, whose debut single hit gold status in Canada, followed by a top three US single with ‘So Alive’ which the band capped with a million selling album and sold out stadium tours.

A highly acclaimed songwriter, often personal, often observational, all of these qualities are evident on his nine solo albums. David has also written and directed various stage productions. His memoir, ‘Who Killed Mister Moonlight?’ (Bauhaus, Black Magick and Benediction) was published by Jarbone Press in 2014 to critical acclaim.

‘Vagabond Songs’ is David J’s ninth studio album and features a disarmingly charming and heart felt collection of acoustic songs written on the road and inspired by people and places encountered by the artist as he ventured on his ramblin’ vagabond way and still those footsteps fall.

Paul Wallfisch has spent several decades staring out the windows of planes, trains and tour buses, occasionally cracking open a book. In between, he managed to produce eight albums with his band Botanica and perform and/or record with Firewater, Love & Rockets, Congo Norvell, Angela McCluskey, Syl Sylvain, Stiv Bators, Anne Pigalle and Johnny Halliday, among others. Paul‘s music can be heard on countless American TV shows and several feature films, including Dummy, (2003 Artisan)starring Adrian Brody and Milla Jovovich, which he scored and also appears in. Amorous, directed by Joanna Coates, won “Best British Feature” at the 2014 Edinburgh International Film FestivalHe is the long-standing writing, production and performance partner of underground tortured soul legend Little Annie. As Music Director at Theater Dortmund, Germany, his original productions included “Republic of Wolves” based on Anne Sexton’s adaptations of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The music, performed live by “The Ministry of Wolves”: Paul, Alexander Hacke, Mick Harvey and Danielle DePicciotto, was released on Mute Records in 2014. Paul joined Swans in 2016. ###

Born and raised in Cuba, David Virelles grew up in a musical family, his father being a singer-songwriter and his mother a flautist in the Santiago de Cuba Symphony. He started studying classical music at age seven, as well as being exposed to the large array of musical forms on the island. Eventually, David discovered his grandfather’s Jazz collection and also became interested in that tradition.

In 2001, he left for Canada as a protégé of Canadian musician Jane Bunnett, with whom he recorded several albums (two of them Grammy nominated), toured and collaborated with on a number of projects. While in Canada, David graduated from the music program at Humber College. Trevor Vaz is the singer and songwriter in Dances, an artful punk rock trio from New York City. After writing exclusively on guitar for most of his life, he recently started playing piano and quickly found himself with a small collection of new songs. Though still a beginner, he’s challenged himself to practice and perform a set of original solo piano music for the first (and potentially only) time on May 12th at The Owl Music Parlor in Brooklyn.

Jangula plays gutter pocket symphonies with skeletal rhythms, lush harmonies, and Legend of Zelda Ice Cavern mystery.  The musical project of best friends Johnny Campagna and Daniel Bachrach.

Kalia Vandever is a trombonist, composer, and educator living in Brooklyn, NY. She recently graduated from The Juilliard School in New York, NY as a member of the Jazz Studies — Bachelor of Music program in May of 2017. Kalia moved from Los Angeles, CA to New York City in 2013 to study at the Juilliard School and has thrived and grown as a creative musician, improviser, composer, and educator since being in the city. Kalia’s current project is a trio with guitar and bass in which she and her collaborators, Nick Dunston and Lee Meadvin play original music and arrangements of jazz standards. Kalia has played with the following musicians whom she admires greatly, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ingrid Jensen, Herbie Hancock, Antonio Hart, Tyshawn Sorey, Justin Brown, Jason Moran, Fabian Almazan, and others.

Zellnor Myrie Campaign Benefit Monday May 14

    7-9 p.m. $50 - $100 sliding scale donatio

Zellnor Myrie is a Brooklyn native, lawyer, and longtime affordable housing advocate. Zellnor derives inspiration for his public service from his mother who moved to Brooklyn 40 years ago from Costa Rica on the promise of a mattress in a friend’s apartment and a job at a factory. His father has been a special education teacher for the past 17 years, and is a current member of The United Federation of Teachers. Zellnor was raised primarily by his mother in a rent-stabilized apartment in Prospect Lefferts Gardens allowing him to attend one of the best public schools in the borough. Zellnor’s mother never let the challenges of being a new immigrant hinder Zellnor’s education.

Zellnor is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, earned his B.A. in Communications and M.A. in Urban Studies from Fordham University. After Fordham, Zellnor worked as Legislative Director for City Councilman Fernando Cabrera where, among other bills, he helped draft and pass the Tenant Bill of Rights.

After leaving the City Council, Zellnor became chair of his Neighborhood Advisory Board where, through community organizing, he helped secure nearly $400,000 in federal funding for job training, after school programming, and tenant protection. Zellnor then went to Cornell Law School where he served as student body president, an editor on the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, a constitutional law instructor in prison, and as a Pro Bono Scholar — a position that allowed him to take the New York Bar early and spend his last semester working full-time at Justice 360, a criminal justice reform organization.

As an associate at a private Manhattan law firm, Zellnor remained committed to public service. Zellnor provided over 600 hours of pro bono service to immigrants seeking asylum, victims of police brutality and illegal stop-and-frisks, special education students not receiving services from the Department of Education, and victims of domestic violence. Zellnor also remained committed to his community as a member of the Neighborhood Advisory Board, junior board for the Legal Aid Society, and president of his building’s tenant’s association.

Zellnor is committed to giving back to the Brooklyn community that raised him and is passionate about securing affordable housing for families like his own, strengthening our public education system, immigrant rights, and criminal justice reform.

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

    Jamie Saft- piano
    Bill McHenry- tenor saxophone
    Bradley Jones- acoustic bass
    Mike Clark- drums

The Jamie Saft Quartet will premiere new music from their upcoming release “Blue Dream” (RareNoise Records) out in June, 2018. Tonight’s concert will feature a number of Saft’s original compositions as well as standards from the Great American Songbook. Four musicians move like ships in the night, circling one another. A tenor sax echoes over the water. That’s saxman Bill McHenry. Drummer Nasheet Waits stirs the waters beneath, splashing into the basswaves of Brad Jones while Jamie Saft slides effortlessly over the keys. It is when he lingers, teasing out perhaps the same several notes, that Blue Dream moves. Punk jazz. Like clouds in a rotation of sunlight and darkness, they’re on a chess board, trading on, trading off. Who’s got the end game? Is none. This is communal jazz, something each of them is living, a new language. A conversation full of tension that gets worked out in the end, when the 1937 classic “There’s a Lull In My Life,” blissfully stretches out the last seven minutes like a long holiday party. The torch becomes buoyant in their hands, and revels in its ache. Shouldn’t we all?- Lance Scott Walker, 2018

Rosita’s music lives at the intersection where bossa nova collides with French chanson, and old Cuban rhythms meet their Argentine counterparts. Her most recent songs are deeply influenced by her love for Haitian and West African music.

Kami Maltz / Ofir Ganon /Sessa (Brazil) May 25

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Brooklyn based Kami Maltz brings the resonance of her native Israel, the passion of her second home, Argentina, and a decidedly New York electronic vibe to her performance. With a smooth voice and her autoharp, Kami conjures a sensuous combination of folk and indie elements, with an added touch of cotton-candy, pop embellishments.

A long-time fixture of both the American and Brazilian music scenes, either as collaborator with NY guitar legend Yonatan Gat, or as co-founder of São Paulo rockers Garotas Suecas, Sessa debuts his solo work for the first time ever in the United States. His songs are sung in Portuguese, with visceral, sexual lyrics in the vain of Caetano Veloso and melodic flourishes not unlike those of Jobim. However, the music gets a deliberate minimalist treatment rarely found in contemporary Brazilian music, more reminiscent of the understated directness of Leonard Cohen or Devendra Banhart’s early work.

Sessa’s concerts are already stuff of legend in Brazil, as he takes the stage accompanied solely by female background vocalists and Afro-Brazilian percussion. While the songs often deal with subjects such as the sensual body in times of digital excess, the music points to new, more subtle directions for Brazilian pop in 2018 – a deep, minimalist, understated, almost insinuated use of the endlessly rich textures and rhythms that defined the songwriting history of Brazil – one which Sessa now joins as one of the most promising new voices.

Described as “the cure for alienation” and “music that’s not about means to ends but about meaning and transcendence”, Falsa is an amazing musical experience rooted in 14th century Sufi music of North India. The effect of listening to Falsa is to be transported both inwards and across centuries of joys, sorrows and longings.

Brent Arnold / Jean Rohe May 31

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

A sure-footed young singer-songwriter,” in the words of The New York Times, Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the internal world as with the external. She is perhaps best known for her aspirational alternative national anthem, National Anthem: Arise! Arise!, which has now been performed by artists across the country and was published last year in the second edition of the popular songbook Rise Up Singing. Equally at home as a solo performer and bandleader/arranger, her award-winning 2013 release Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show found her at the helm of a 7-piece+ ensemble.  Her upcoming record as a bandleader, Sisterly, is a collection of songs about communication and missed connections, and tackles topics from love, lust, and longing to prisons, police violence, migration, and home. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

    -Parry Gettelman,  The Orlando Sentinel
“Briggan Krauss is the kid who brings in the electronics kit, the kind of toy they made in the ’70s that makes mechanical beeps and squawks, except he makes these noises on an alto saxophone, not an erector set.”

Jared Samuel Jana Horn // Yotoco June 2

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Jana Horn and Jared Samuel (aka Invisible Familiars) will be sharing their songs and an hour-long time slot before Yotoco this evening, from 8-9pm.

in honor of the occasion they have done decided to rewrite each other’s press biographies.

Jared, according to Jana: You may like Invisible Familiars if you take boats anywhere. Where say, in the midst of your company, conversation breaks, and you notice something has been playing all along, a melody as open and ancient as the water itself, and taking no money. You wonder where it’s been. And then a girl walks up to you from below the deck and says “How did you sleep?” And you say that you were up on the hour all night, because you slept beside her dog. She asks if you’ve ever seen such a beautiful dog and you say, “only intermittently, last night.” You have to follow her, she says. “You have to listen to this song.” She puts the needle to it and to your surprise, although you don’t think you’ve ever heard it, you’re singing along. You know all the words. She smiles because she knows. These are the songs of Invisible Familiars. Think Harry Nilsson, a little Sinatra, but with it’s own groove.

    Jana, according to Jared:
if genres are your thing then one could call Jana Horn “stripped-down pop” and if comparisons make you feel less afraid about the mysteries of life i would recommend her music to fans of Sybille Baier, Cowboy Junkies, and Slade. the latter, mainly because Slade fans are usually open and lively people.

to further expand at my own peril: if Jana Horn’s music was a fully formed person it might be a Chanel-employed contract-model who has read a lot and has been thru perhaps a lengthy “awkward phase” before eventually becoming so aesthetically pleasing to the casual observer. and by this clumsy metaphor i mean that the songs are lean, intelligent but not pretentious, and even more full of character than even the elegant, at-times-almost-avian exterior would seem to suggest.

“Yotoco’s music defies categorization.  It isn’t salsa, son, cumbia, merengue or psychedelic rock; it isn’t rumba, funk, bomba or plena. It draws from all of those traditions, transcends them, and creates something unique, trippy, and danceable. Yotoco’s music may be hard to classify- but it is very easy to party to.”

    101 Crustaceans / Dustin Carlson's Air Ceremony June 8

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

An unfolding journey that travels through a gorgeous landscape of shimmering trombones, ambient electronics, unsettling noises and finally welcoming fingerpicked guitar. Stitched together with Carlson’s resplendent singing, “Shakes/The Noise of Wings” is an expansive, spiritual pair of suites that in its own way wouldn’t sound out of place on an early 70’s King Crimson record, or if an imaginary gospel group ate a tub of LSD and holed up in the studio with Brian Eno.

    http://dustincarlson.bandcamp.com/album/shakes-the-noise-of-wings

Composer Ed Pastorini, who leads the band 101 Crustaceans, is a New York singer/pianist with an unusual, sometimes circular, approach to the song form. His eerie ballads and more aggressive works walk the line between popular song, art song, jazz, and improvisation. He tells of being classically-trained, but he was turned to the pop side by Credence Clearwater Revival, Traffic, The Beatles and some of the Motown hits. Pastorini also draws on twisted 1950’s jazz harmonies to write piano-based songs that sound like he once sang along with saxophone solos.

Her Crooked Heart with Humbird June 9

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

HER CROOKED HEART is the new music of Rachel Ries – multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, rock & roll choir director, sideman, singer. Her Crooked Heart’s debut EP, To Gentlemen, and forthcoming album, To Love To Leave To Live, feature members of Bon Iver, Shane Leonard and string arrangements by the inimitable Rob Moose.

Along with numerous and diverse collaborators through the years (including Hadestown mastermind Anaïs Mitchell), Rachel has proven herself ever-curious to expand her sound, her scope, and sail on past the confines of ‘singer-songwriter.’ After all, sometimes what the heart wants is poetry and a syncopated horn line; a string section and a bass synth – all leaving exultation and devastation in their wake.

Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.

But one thing has remained true since RR’s first homespun release: her sly and compassionate voice, excavating the depths of an all-too-human heart, armed with levity and a pen. It’s the messy humanity that’s of interest here. The trying and failing; the loving and losing and loving again. The choosing to be brave even when you’re shaking in your tattered boots. So please, make welcome: Her Crooked Heart. She’s been here all along.

Wish Wish, Sean Cronin & Julian Cubillos, June 21

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

WishWish is the band of Brooklyn-based drummer, singer, and songwriter, Rachel Housle.  An active side person, Rachel’s music draws from a broad range of stylistic influences that find weird little homes in the twists and turns of song form.  Her songs are self-reflective and steeped in fractured dream-like images, anchored by melodies that are at once playful and tinged with emotion.

Sean Cronin plays and sings his songs. In a stripped down version of the ever-expansive and ambitious “Very Good”, Sean opts for a simpler and less theatrical presentation of his music. This reveals the bizarre imagination of a unique and honest songwriter, who is equally moved by the work of Leonard Cohen, the Pixies, Maurice Ravel, and Eugene Ionesco. These performances somehow always have an air of spontaneity, as though the pieces are springing forth from thin air, and could collapse at any moment. Sean Cronin will be joined by Adam Brisbin on guitar etc, Katie Lee on violin etc; and Rachel Housle on drums.

If you’ve ever had a chance to see Julian Cubillos work, then you know his uncanny ability to play mastermind while embodying both warmth and calming cool. In May, the Brooklyn-via-Los Angeles singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer emerged with the follow-up to his 2015 punk rock glam party Evil in the form of a more stripped-down and direct rock record—and perhaps his most fully-realized to date—In Heaven.

With production credits spanning dozens of projects across Los Angeles and New York, it is perhaps Cubillos’ own music that best reflects his unassuming nice-guy genius sentiment. Time Out New York describes his production style as “somehow [blending] genres like garage-punk, electro-pop and jazzy lo-fi into a coherent, fresh sound.”

Trouble Trouble / Lau Noa / Anthony Da Costa June 22

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Trouble Trouble are Adam Schatz and Ben Goldberg. Taking care of business, then realizing not only was it someone else’s business but we didn’t really take care of it anyway, then I forgot how the bridge goes.

Lau Noah (Spain 1994)is a Brooklyn based storyteller.

Anthony da Costa’s songs don’t extend metaphors or spin yarns. They shoot straight. The singer-songwriter and guitarist speaks plainly, from the heart and the gut.

With his latest work, including his recent solo album DA COSTA, he adds the musical force of some of American folk and roots’ seminal cities to his forthright style. “In the past few years, since I moved from New York to Austin and then to Nashville, I’ve found my voice as a songwriter,” muses da Costa. “I’ve honed my band, made strong musical friendships. I felt like I started over and found what I needed to say.” You can hear it clearly in his songs, whether they are steeped in rock-country grit or frank folk.

A seasoned sideperson, he’s toured extensively with Grammy-winning performers (Joy Williams of The Civil Wars, Sarah Jarosz) and Americana darlings (Aoife O’Donovan). He’s shared the stage with everyone from Judy Collins to Kenny Loggins, played major festivals and late-night shows (CONAN), and written songs with hitmakers (Steve Poltz).

In her performances, she brings forth an expansive repertoire steeped in history and Mediterranean folk traditions, and a rich, guttural voice that carries the raw emotions of protest, the longing for freedom, and the uncompromising commitment to sing every note with soul.

Renata Zeiguer’s debut album Old Ghost is the sound of someone finding and losing herself in the endless dance of fear and forgiveness. With secretly wise melodic constructions, she tempts the listener toward forbidden insights, resurrecting her childhood fascination with classical and jazz music. The ghosts of Ravel, Debussy, and Gershwin run through her veins, whirling with Billie Holiday, Os Mutantes, The Pixies, Yo La Tengo and The Beatles. Her music is stained with the brutality of battling oneself, and yet the pulse of love echoes throughout like a mystical wind.

Ana Egge was born in Estevan, SK Canada and grew up in North Dakota and New Mexico. She began her music career in Austin, TX at the age of 20 releasing her first album ‘River Under The Road’ in 1997, recorded with the legendary western swing band, Asleep At The Wheel. Over the following years and 8 albums she worked with producers Martin Terefe, Jason Mercer, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle and Stewart Lerman.   “White Tiger”, Ana Egge’s tenth album, has nine originals and one cover (John Hartford), and so amply displays her singularly articulate and affecting honesty and sensitivity as to once again deserve USA Today’s accolade, “[Ana] can write and sing rings around” her contemporaries. The CD features wind, string, and vocal arrangements by multi-instrumentalist/producer Alec Spiegelman (Cuddle Magic) and guest appearances by Anais Mitchell, Billy Strings, Alex Hargreaves, and Buck Meek (Big Thief). Like the tiger in the title song, Egge, herself, is near-miraculous, rare but real, and, as Lucinda Williams once told some friends, “Listen to her lyrics. Ana is the folk Nina Simone.”

Kenny and the Eggplants / Life in a Blender Jul 13

    7:30 Doors, $10.00 Suggested Donation

    Life in a Blender

Called “an American Robyn Hitchcock” by The Big Takeover, Life in a Blender has been the canvas for singer and songwriter Don Rauf’s blackly comic landscapes for more than three decades. The group has released nine albums ranging from screaming punk to orchestrated chamber pop, and has brought the theatrics of its live act to stages from Berlin to Austin to Toronto to Brooklyn and Seattle. The band’s latest album Happy Enough is out on Fang Records, and features the twisted clarinet of old friend Ralph Carney, who we miss like crazy. Jersey Beat called Happy Enough “an utterly engaging blend of joy and verve while the dynamic and harmonic arrangements keep things lively and stirring from start to finish.”

Kenny and the Eggplants say that the prevailing mood at their shows is ‘cheerful chaos.’ But it’s always good to hear what others think. Reviewing a show in Edinburgh, the Sunday Mail said: ‘They don’t come much zanier than this New York trio. They sang goofy songs about partying worms with artistic temperaments and Rambo going on shopping sprees . . . But behind the surreal antics were technically proficient musicians who know how to write a good pop tune and work an audience. Alien Love Song had a chorus so infectious I was humming it all the way home. There is genius among the Eggplants . . . Trot A Mouse

    9pm
    Desmond White

    ####

Trot A Mouse performs the compositions of Simon Jermyn. Seamlessly moving between the written and the improvised, this is music comprised of a multitude of influences and inspirations, defined only by an open approach, with spontaneity at it’s core. Simon Jermyn – bass / compositions, Charlotte Greve – alto sax, Anna Webber – tenor sax, Mark Ferber – drums.

Australian bassist Desmond White brings his group Open Ground to perform music from a new suite of songs that continues his work of integrating jazz and singer/songwriter lexicons.  Having released two albums of such material for Biophilia Records, Short Stories in 2013 and Glace in 2017, this new material attempts to further shirk the often personal or perceived genre-based constraints that all musicians encounter; the marriage of improvisational freedom to cohesive lyrical storytelling often being the perennial challenge.  Joining him for the evening are three musicians already known for their versatility and adventurous spirits, Jorn Swart on Piano/Keys, Hugh Stuckey on Guitar and Allan Mednard on drums, with Desmond on Bass/Guitar/Vox.

Daniel Meron will also join him for some of his set on Piano.

Pianist composer Daniel Meron and his band will play a special show just before going in the studio to record a new album.

Influenced by jazz, folk and world music, Meron’s songs communicate vivid stories and emotions to the listener, and shift between intimate moments and energetic improvisation. Joined by Pablo Menares (bass), Felix Lecaros (drums) and Kéren Or Tayar (voice), Daniel will share the music that will be recorded on the following day.

    Dia Luna, b o t & Blythe Gruda Jul 20

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

    DIA LUNA

Somewhere between Bjork’s visionary expressiveness, Saint Vincent’s soulful, quirky pop music, and Joni Mitchell’s poetic lyricism, lives the music of DIA LUNA. Her debut EP, Camellia, produced by Tomas Deltoro-Diaz, sifts through her personal mythologies, history and ancestral lineage. Between the deserts of Mexico, the golden hills of California, and the concrete streets of New York City, DIA LUNA pushes and pulls at the roots of the family tree. Camellia explores the possibility of looking backwards and forwards at once, holding the self and the other with equal presence, and finding sovereignty somehow through it all.

    Blythe Gruda

Her voice acts as a puppeteer, casting strings across an audience and capturing auras, making them dance like marionettes.

Each of her songs lilts and bleeds effortless from one number to the next telling stories of heartbreak, lessons learned, renaissance and reconstruction.

Effortless melodies combined with a foray of experimental sound and instruments, and the conjuring of every fiber of her physical and spiritual being astral project through the dark universe into the hearts of many through clandestine siren song.

Max Kennedy Rec Release /Lau Noah /Jake Sherman Jul 27

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

5/24/2018 – photo by Ben Stas

Max Kennedy is a musical sorcerer, able to conjure up serene landscapes and scenes of beguiling discordance with his subtle arrangements and delicate, plaintive voice. Carving out a space between folk, jazz, and the avant-garde, his new release, On That Great Selection Day, will seduce you with its homespun, heartfelt glow and blow you away with startling shifts in melody and vocal harmony (the latter courtesy of his partner Anneke Reich– they gel like Gram and Emmylou). It’s an album that defies genre, forging new musical paths with every labyrinthine twist and turn.  On That Great Selection Day is a wondrous and perfectly idiosyncratic tour de force. If you don’t give this one a spin, you’re seriously missing out.

    Lau Noah

Lau Noah (Spain 1994)is a Brooklyn based storyteller.

Jake Sherman premieres the his one man band.  There will be hihat, there will be bass drum, there will be keybass, there will be piano, there will be singing, there will not be other band members. Sherman honed his sound by playing gospel organ at Baptist churches in Brooklyn, as well as performing and recording as a sideman with such artists as Bilal, Meshell Ndegeoello, Chance the Rapper, Nick Hakim, Gabriel Garzon-Montano, and Benny Sings. Exhibiting a wide scope and endearing humor, Sherman’s music is a synthesis of popular and esoteric elements, combining glimmering orchestral spacescapes with lo-fi drum machines, and vintage keyboards.  But make no mistake – this is pop music, cemented as such by Jake’s lyrical charm and strong penchant for melody.

Alexa Barchini and Jackson are a Brooklyn based guitar and voice duo, performing originals alongside covers spanning the jazz, singer songwriter, and Brazilian realms.

Alexa and Jackson lend credence to the notion that the the whole can exceed the sum of its parts. Alexa’s controlled and smokey beyond her years
voice, and Jack’s excursions around the fretboard which beg the question “what’s next?”, are splendid in their own right, but when the two are combined, something special happens. Original music which immediately plants ear worms, and coverage of tunes never covered, display a palpable chemistry between the two musicians which is  unforgettable.

As a performing and recording artist, guitarist and composer Brandon Ross has worked and collaborated with several innovative voices in modern music such as Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, Cassandra Wilson, Jewel, Tony Williams, Lizz Wright, Arto Lindsay, The Lounge Lizards, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Bill Frisell, Me’Shell N’degeocello, Arrested Development, Archie Shepp, Muhal Richard Abrams, Don Byron, Ron Miles and many others.

This night’s offering, Immortal Obsolescence, features drummer JT Lewis, bassist Stomu Takeishi and a special guest.

Michael Coleman‘s Resort Music is the strange radio station that was playing in the elevator at that vacation destination you visited last Winter. You didn’t really notice it but there was something both relaxing and unsettling about it as you stepped into the lobby on your way down to the beach. Like a vague memory of a dream you recall years later. “Was that a song I knew?”, you ask yourself as you slip into the waves. Questions like, “What am I doing here?” and “Is this my life now?” begin to force their way into your mind as you float out into the sea.

The Resort Music Suite will be performed by Michael Coleman (keyboards), Rob Adkins (bass) and Austin Vaughn (drums).

K.O. SOLO (Kate Olson) is a Seattle-based electro-acoustic improvised meditation, featuring soprano saxophone, loops, beats, and synthesizers.

    www.kateplayssax.com

[K.O. SOLO has a] keen ability to evoke intimately vast space with just her horn, vox, effects, and a computer. Steeped in post-bop jazz and minimalism, Olson summons methodical, tranquil improvisations that conjure profoundly spiritual feelings that should please fans of Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, and Terry Riley….Olson really maximizes the emotional power of her melancholy, mellifluous sax and sparse beats, creating an eerie desolation that recalls Deep Listening Band’s recordings in the Fort Worden Cistern. –Dave Segal, The Stranger

Singer-songwriter Kami Maltz and fingerstyle guitarist Josh Turner join forces on stage for the first time in an homage to the great Joni Mitchell. They got the idea after their rendition of Mitchell’s “Carey” amassed over 50,000 views on YouTube in just a few months, and have since been working together to meticulously create the sound of Joni’s earlier work while bringing their own fresh perspectives to it.

Joanna Sternberg is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and visual artist living in New York City.  They make art about their emotions with the hope that it will help the viewer/listener/audience feel less alone.  Joanna plays all styles and genres of music, but does not like to categorize art in any way.  Their art is just a form of love designed to help people feel and heal.  Joanna’s work can be found on www.joannasternberg.com.  Thanks for reading this!  I tried to write in the third person… Sincerely,Joanna

Raised in Japan and international settings, a pianist and composer, Tomoko Ozawa combines lyricism with European contemporary classical music and rhythmic elements of Jazz in her music. Her premier album Gentian frames, and accentuates the insightful words of Emily Dickinson with instrumental compositions and playful improvisation. She continues to perform with her group, originally founded in Boston in 2013, featuring Yoav Eshed on guitar and Rob Taylor on bass, while pursuing her PhD degree in Integrated Composition and Technology at the University of California, Irvine.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music, and made a big splash in NYC, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès.

For the uninitiated, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the “5 Bands You Need to Know in Brooklyn’s Arabic Music Scene”, Innov Gnawa make great use of this traditional repertoire, and add their own, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. Taken as a whole, this exciting new outfit works hard to fuse a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of New York City.

She has given her musical talents to various projects including the Bread and Puppet Theater. She performs regularly in New York City.

Julia Patinella is a multilingual singer currently living between Sevilla, Spain and Brooklyn, NY. After years of immersion as a Flamenco singer in southern Spain, as well as a life-long dedication to the oral traditions of her ancestor’s native Sicily, Julia has developed several original musical projects  in Spanish, Italian / Sicilian and English, that draw from her roots, her experience as a first-generation American female, and urgent socio-political themes. In her performances, she brings forth an expansive repertoire steeped in history and Mediterranean folk traditions, and a rich, guttural voice that carries the raw emotions of protest, the longing for freedom, and the uncompromising commitment to sing every note with soul.

Multi-instrumentalist Oscar Noriega pairs Jesse Quattro’s spellbinding voice with Chris Speed’s lyrical tenor playing. Together with Nate Radley, they perform songs with the most beautiful melodies, delicately orchestrated, with a feeling of coziness and with a tinge of melancholy.

The Rhythm Method // Gaya Feldheim Schorr & Kat Lee Oct 4

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

The Hidden Mothers Project is an initiative by The Rhythm Method to bring the music of historical women composers into the public consciousness. This inaugural Hidden Mothers performance will present little-known works by Florence Price, Amanda Maier-Röntgen, Amy Beach, and Elizabeth Maconchy, as well as a premiere performance of The Rhythm Method’s “Suffragette Songs,” which reset song texts from the early 20th century women’s movement.

With “stunning displays of fearsome extended technique and fearless programming” (New York Music Daily) and “uncompromising and unreserved . . . intense, and sensuously gestural” performances (examiner.com), The Rhythm Method strives to reimagine the string quartet in a contemporary, feminist context. The four performer-composers of The Rhythm Method continually expand their sonic and expressive palette through the use of graphic notation, vocalization, improvisation, and performance.  They are slated to release its debut album, featuring new works by Leah Asher and Marina Kifferstein, on SCRIPTS Records in 2019.

I Have Considered The Lilies – Gaya Sings Connie:

Disappearing in 1974, folk musician and songwriter Connie Converse left behind a unique, wistful and haunting body of work that for many years remained unheard. Gaya found Connie earlier this year, and sat with her songs as they delicately unfolded. Amidst stories and melodies beautifully interwoven, it is an immense pleasure to relive Connie’s enigma through Gaya’s blooming reimagination. Born in the heart of Tel Aviv, New York based musician and vocalist Gaya Feldheim Schorr creates and performs jazz and creative contemporary music, deconstructing her wide array of musical influences to conjure up her enchanting original voice.

“Kat Lee writes transportive songs that penetrate and linger. Otherwise found fronting the Brooklyn rock band Tiny Gun, here she conversely performs a batch of songs in their stripped down and raw forms, adding to the imbedded intimacy of their compositions. She is joined by multi-instrumentalist Jesse Bielenberg on semi-baritone guitar and vocals.”

Mikayla McVey writes acid cowgirl music from the beating, blistered, blissed out heart of the West. Born in Virginia and raised up in the holy golden Northern California hills, McVey has made homes in rural South America, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and the 35ft cavern of a 1986 International School bus named Splendor. Music is always home and probably her best hope for giving beauty back to the world.

Peter Stampfel's Atomic Meta-Pagans / Ether Frolic Mob Oct 12

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Peter Stampfel’s Atomic Meta-Pagans Eat the Ether Frolic Mob.

“We stick our hands up the ass of American music, grab it by the throat, and pull it inside-out. It’s 21st century 19th century American music played in a vast variety of 20th century styles.”  –Peter Stampfel

Peter Stampfel first came to prominence in 1964, as the singing, banjoist-fiddler co-founder of the Holy Modal Rounders, who were in turn the backing band of the Fugs at the time of their 1965 debut. These alone would have secured his place in history as a founder of Freak Folk.  But Peter has never stopped playing or innovating, and currently leads two bands, exuberance undimmed.

The Ether Frolic Mob is  Peter Stampfel (fiddle, banjo, lead vocals), Sam Werbalowsky (banjo, guitar), Eli Hekto (banjo, mandolin), Steve Espinola (piano), Heather Wagner (drums), and the Stampfel Sisters (Lily and Zoe Stampfel, vocals and percussion).

When improvisatory vocalist-composer Shelley Hirsch joins the Ether Frolic Mob, they become the Atomic Meta-Pagans. They have recently completed their second album, soon to be released on Don Giovanni Records, with a third album already in progress. Peter and Shelley will duet their way through an unconventional take on standards of the 1930’s and 40’s.  http://www.shelleyhirsch.com/shelley/

The other members of the Ether Frolic Mob will be spotlighted in short sets featuring their other music projects, rounding out an eclectic revue.

    Jenny Luna – voice, percussion

    Adam Good – ud

    Eylem Basaldi – violin

    Special guest:

    Paul Brown – bass

With a musical vision that is at once ethereal and grounded, Dolunay flirts with the soundscape of the ancient Ottomans, tracing its migration through Balkan villages, coaxing it across seas and oceans, and grafting it onto a Brooklyn-based backdrop. The trio infuses classic and contemporary traditions with an urban grit that can only be found in New York City’s confluence of musical and cultural forces. With an array of original compositions offered alongside renditions of Turkish and Rumeli standards, the music of Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) offers listeners an escape from the press of city life.

Damon Isaac Smith , Elise Leavy & Caroline Kuhn Oct 19

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Damon Isaac Smith is a Northeast based pianist, songwriter, improviser. He’s a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and performs as a sideman and performer with the legendary “Losers Lounge” series at Joe’s Pub (2014 onward). He started his career performing and touring with artists such as Jon Anderson of Yes and Napoleon Murphy Brock of Frank Zappa’s band. He’s played his original music at the Stone, Highline Ballroom, the Knitting Factory, CBGB’s, and the Bitter End, and as a sideman in festivals such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Zappanale. Damon is a founding member of two bands: The Jacobins and Cricket. His debut solo album, “Intimate Machinery,” came out on ERASED! tapes in December 2017.

Caroline Kuhn is a New York native who began singing at age four, recording for jingles and television. Her songwriting focuses on interesting harmonization and rhythmic fingerpicking on guitar and tenor banjo. This is strongly influenced by her extensive choral training and appreciation for a wide range of music styles, such as pop, folk, and contemporary vocal music. Since entering the New England Conservatory, she helped to form two bands: The Ladles and Ruthless Moon. Both perform regularly throughout the New England area.

Elise Leavy is a singer and songwriter from northern California. Coming from a background of largely Beatles, she began writing songs at the age of 8 and has since begun her endeavor to bring the accordion and the tenor guitar back into the folk world through her own songs, pulling from the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen and other such songwriters. She is also a core member and songwriter in the group Ruthless Moon, an up and coming folk band begun in Boston, MA, by students of the New England Conservatory, made up of accordion (Elise Leavy), guitar (Sam Talmadge), tenor banjo (Caroline Kuhn), bass (Dan Klingsberg), and vocals by all.

Relatives – Ian Davis and Katie Vogel – met upon arrival to New York City in 2007 and have been singing and writing together since. Over the years, we have been paring down and turning inwards, exploring what can be done with less. Our new album, Strange We Fall, was released on Figure & Ground Records in August 2018.

b o t (/bät/) is a brooklyn-based musical collective created in early 2016. in all of its permutations, b o t is led by an unnamed character of ambiguous gender who appears to be perpetually apprehensive and cynical. being heavily influenced by the contemporary gospel of the late nineties and oughts, b o t’s sound lends itself to being off-centered, soulful pop.

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

New York-based Israeli guitarist and vocalist Dida has a particular talent for storytelling. Whether it be a jazz standard, a scorching blues number, an old country ballad, or a heartfelt original “Dida sings in a voice sometimes playful, warm, resonant, no frills. She sings the words, giving them their meaning, their weight, with perfect diction and charm.” (Jazz Hot, France)

Scree plays instrumental musings on crags, cliffs, and life after the fall of the American empire.

Katy the Kyng plays a slightly overdriven Stratocaster narrated by spurts of poetry. She studied Thelonious Monk in school and e e cummings in bed. Her sound is dry and sweet– DeMarco with hints of Hedberg.

Lau Noah / Daniel Rotem Nov 1

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

Lau Noah (Spain 1994) is a Brooklyn based storyteller. She has recently found the deepest way to express her tales in the harmonic tapestry that a guitar and a voice, intertwined, create.

Through several musical influences and four languages that bring  widely diverse qualities to the music, Noah travels from multi instrumentalist, film scorer, composer to writer, painter and teacher with the endeavor of using Art as a shelter where the colors of the dark and the light naturally reconcile.

Saxophonist, composer, and educator Daniel Rotem fell in love with music at an early age and started playing tenor saxophone when he was 13. Now at age 27, Daniel is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and the world-renowned Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA. He has performed on four continents and has had the honor to share the stage with legendary artists from Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Childs, and Dave Liebman, to Stevie Wonder, Usher, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

Daniel went on a U.S. State Department Tour to Morocco, and had the privilege of leading and narrating a jazz history masterclass and performance at the White House hosted by the First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama, as part of International Jazz Day in 2016. Daniel has performed at acclaimed festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz Festival, the Red Sea Jazz Festival, the Montalcino Jazz Festival, and at famed venues such as The Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, the Microsoft Theater in LA, and many more.

Daniel has taught at the Stanford Jazz Summer Camp and Jazz Institute, and is currently on faculty at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), and teaches the LAUSD All-City Jazz Band. His debut album “Be Nice” was released independently in February 2017. His second double album ‘Serenading the Future’ will be released on September 28, 2018.

.michael, Joanna Sternberg, Zach Onett & James Gentile Nov 2

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

.michael is a clarinet/guitar duo that plays sometimes instrumental love songs and sometimes non-instrumental love songs, often about or told from the perspective of a person named Michael, no relation to the band or its members.

Joanna Sternberg lives in New York City and plays instruments, writes songs, sings and draws.  Joanna writes songs about the span of human emotions with the hope that it will make someone feel less alone.  This is the reason Joanna creates all of their art.  Joanna does not like to think of music in terms of style or genre, and thinks that everyone can draw.

Pianist Zach Onett and guitarist James Gentile are a duo exploring melodic narrative through instrumental music. Their compositions tinker with the traditional aesthetics of their instruments by blending genre and creating theatrical soundscapes. Onett is a composition graduate of CalArts and resides in Haverhill, MA. Gentile holds his BFA in photography from Pratt and resides in Brooklyn. They are currently working towards releasing their first collection of music.

Allegra Krieger, Chris Merritt & The Mommyheads Nov 9

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

About Allegra Krieger: A contemporary folk singer, songwriter, tree planter, art model, waitress, and cave dweller inspired by a life lived transiently and freely; with songs regarding her travels and the relations that have come and gone within them.

Chris Merritt is a songwriter, producer, performer, and piano tuner.  His thousands of original songs have been labeled Prog Pop, Piano Rock, and Jazz.  In a culture where mainstream music lacks originality and individuality, Merritt’s independent albums have accrued tens of thousands of plays online, and a dedicated, snowballing fan base.  Some of Chris’ music featured in mainstream film and advertising have even seen millions of plays online. He’s toured the US and Japan, put out 7 full records under his own name (and several others: from his early days with Paperface to his newer collaboration with Cruise Elroy).

The depth of songwriting on Chris’s latest album “Time is Real” has been praised by Fountains Of Wayne, Bruce Hornsby, and The Zombies.   Ye Olde Machine Piano is the upcoming album from Chris Merritt.  As usual, Merritt’s lyrics hit on topics from the cycles of civilization, to quantum physics, to love and loss.  Catch him now as creative, deep, piano-driven rock music makes its comeback.

The Mommyheads were formed in Brooklyn in 1988 and have been producing creative, melodic, and experimental indie-pop ever since. Their new, eleventh album, Soundtrack to the World’s End offers a blend of groovy songs, progressive art-rock, and bracing messages for a world teetering on the brink of social, economic, and ecological catastrophe.

“The Mommyheads are back, which is good news” – NY POST
“The Mommyheads are a true indie rock national treasure.” – FUN FUN FUN
“Look no more for the untouchable pop indie band” – INSIGHT
“When encountering this outpouring of melodic sophistication and creativity – both in the actual instruments and what is done with them, it’s near revelatory” – CMJ
“The Mommyheads specialize in winsomely low-key, perfectly cut gems of avant-pop.“ – NEW YORK MAGAZINE
“Incorporating delicately picked, Television-like Fender guitar chiming, ultra-catchy power pop infused tenor vocal melodies, and a snap-tight rhythm section, the group has fully realized a record of astounding ambition and scope.” – ALLMUSIC

Andrew Dimola and Alec Spiegelman present the music from their new album, Diesel Cleaning. The LP features contributions from Trevor Dunn and Jason Nazary, and is full of grungey, far-ranging, quick-changing instrumentals, joined here and there by a whispery let’s-not-bother-the-neighbors choir. Andrew and Alec will perform music from Diesel Cleaning, as well as newer songs, joined by Christopher McDonald & Dave Flaherty (Cuddle Magic, etc.)

    7:30pm
Maitri – ft. Caroline Davis, Ben Hoffman

    8:00pm
Audible Spirits – ft. Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Curtis Hasselbring, Matt Moran

Translated from Sanskrit, Maitri (”my tree”) is an unconditional love and acceptance of self that extends outward into the world. Formed in Chicago by Caroline Davis, it has become a collective songwriting outfit for both her and Ben Hoffmann since its relocation to Brooklyn. Featuring soulful vocals over polyrhythmic grooves, the group also uses experimental sounds and effects to create a lush sonic landscape. Maitri is the soundtrack for the inevitable ushering in of the new world order.

Audible Spirits is an electro-acoustic live performance blurring improvisation and recording, the spontaneous and the codified; a meditation on the institutionalization of jazz; a recognition that jazz brings its history with it – performance is the fulcrum between the past and the future, and as musicians push the boundaries for the future, the ghosts are always present in the room. These three musicians – Sarah Elizabeth Charles (voice and electronics), Curtis Hasselbring (samples and trombone), and Matt Moran (vibraphone and cymbals) – use their instruments and electronic samples of “music minus one” recordings to explore (in)visibility and legacy in jazz. By diving deeply into an iconic jazz education tool that foreshadowed a huge jazz education industry, and reverently exploring “outdated” jazz standards, Audible Spirits is a manifesto on historical lineage and individual creativity in a hall of mirrors using live music, samples, and visual stagecraft.

Akie Bermiss Trio / Richard Sears Nov 30

    7:30 Doors, $10.00 Suggested Donation

Akie Bermiss with his affable disposition, glasses, and healthy do of cascading dreads that drape down to his shoulders, is unabashedly a self-professed nerd to the nth degree. Since early childhood Akie has been an obsessed science fiction aficionado. Yet he does have an artist-friendly façade and has managed to cultivate and live a double-life as a thriving music protégé, pianist, singer/songwriter, composer, arranger and emerging solo artist. Akie kicked off his 2017 touring schedule playing keyboards and providing backing vocals for veteran indie multi-genre band Lake Street Dive’s national concert tour in support of their latest CD, “Side Pony.

Akie is a Brooklyn native raised in a musical household full of jazz and politics fueled by his former- activist mom and dad. He began singing in church, moved it to school for a while, enroute becoming somewhat of a musical chameleon. His raucous, guttural and soulful vocals are a delectable fusion of Donny Hathaway and Tom Waits. He’s equally adept singing neo-soul, funk, contemporary jazz, alternative rock, and hip hop.

Akie cut his teeth in music the old-fashioned way; he went to college and earned a degree in music composition at Bard College.  Among other things he is also the author of a children’s book (“I Hate to Be Sick” — out on Scholastic), a lover of science fiction and fantasy novels, a huge fan of cigars, and he takes his bourbon: neat.

Appearing with Akie are Dan Asher, Bass, and Andrew Gillespie, Drums

As a composer Richard has received commissions/grants from The Shed (2018), the Aaron Copland Fund (2015) and the Los Angeles Jazz Society (2013). His previous release, “Altadena”, features the legendary drummer, Albert “Tootie” Heath performing with Richard’s sextet. “Altadena” earned 4 stars in Downbeat Magazine, naming it one of the Best Albums of 2017. Taking inspiration from the poetry of Hart Crane, “Iron Year” features original music for sextet, written since Sears moved to New York in 2015.

“A language around love and ecstasy as fundamental to the human experience. An abiding recognition of the astonishing complexity of being human. A tenderness around the most important, deeply felt emotional and psychological needs. And a cultural mechanism whereby satisfying these does not have to be a struggle. That’s Sufi Music.” – Falsa
DOLUNAY plays an array of original compositions alongside renditions of Turkish and Rumeli standards.  The music of Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) infuses classic and contemporary traditions with an urban grit that can only be found in New York City’s confluence of musical and cultural forces.

Formed in 2012 at the 5th Estate sessions in Brooklyn, NYC, Beekman is a collective endeavor by saxophonist Kyle Nasser, pianist Yago Vazguez, bassist Pablo Menares, and drummer Rodrigo Recabarren. The quartet couples eclectic original compositions – steeped in jazz, rock, Latin, and classical – with dynamic group interplay into a sound that is international while remaining squarely in the realm of modern jazz. Their first record (Vol. 01, Discos Pendiente 2015) was nominated for a Chilean Music Award (Premios Pulsar) for best Jazz album. The group released Vol. 02 on in October 2016 and Vol. 03 Live in San Francisco on in June 2015, both for Ropeadope Records.

Praised by Ben Ratliff of The New York Times as a saxophonist who is “…making the connections among about 70 years’ worth of contemplative, articulate and light–toned players,” Alex LoRe is an in-demand saxophonist and composer on the current New York scene. With a strong upbringing in classical music, mentored by such masters as Lee Konitz and James Moody, LoRe’s playing and compositions reflect a myriad of influences ranging from the European classical repertoire to post–bop jazz to 21st century pop music. In 2016, he released his second album entitled More Figs and Blue Things on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music label. Alex LoRe, says saxophonist and educator Bunky Green, “will emerge to become one of the leading voices on the international jazz scene.”

Endangered Heart Quartet / Mike Baggetta & Nick Millevoi /The Shantypeople Dec 14

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

Endangered Heart Quartet is an elastic group of composer-musicians. Founding members of the prestigious Jazz Passengers, saxophonist/writer Roy Nathanson and in-demand trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, join versatile bassist Tim Kiah and two-time Grammy-nominated violinist Jesse Mills to create a new ensemble with a broad musical palette. Endangered Heart Quartet elaborates on Roy Nathanson’s Sotto Voce ensemble, which explored ways to merge words and sound in an extended language, through composition and mostly jazz-inflected improvisation. This new collective band, Endangered Heart Quartet, expands that language through chamber music and detailed classical composition, to “sing” the most human songs from the American musical tradition. From re-imaginings of “Goodnight Irene” and Ornette Coleman’s “Circle with a Hole In The Middle” to the personal compositions of the bands’ members who all offer their own varied musical legacies, EHQ symphonically combines the instrumental sounds with their own vocals. Endangered Heart Quartet mines the many years of professional playing and composing of the group’s members, to offer a kind of “heart music” salve for the harsh political and social climate of today.

Mike Baggetta and Nick Millevoi come together in a new duo of improvised electric guitars. Baggetta has been called a “guitar poet” by Nels Cline, “a kind of post-Frisellian sonic explorer” by Downbeat, and the New York Times says he “makes stealthy, mysterious music.” Millevoi’s music has been described by Pitchfork as “music that seeks the sun by exploding toward it,” and NPR Music has said, “When Nick Millevoi plays the guitar, it’s like a rocket darting skyward between clouds.” Both guitarists have worked with some of the biggest names in experimental jazz and rock, including artists like Nels Cline, John Zorn, Mike Watt, Jim Keltner, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and many more.

about Allegra Krieger: A contemporary folk singer, songwriter, tree planter, art model, waitress, and cave dweller inspired by a life lived transiently and freely; with songs regarding her travels and the relations that have come and gone within them.

Wendy Eisenberg “Its Shape Is Your Touch” VDSQ Release Show

Wendy Eisenberg is an improvising guitarist, banjo player, songwriter, composer, and poet based in Western Massachusetts. Using the languages of free jazz, extreme metal, art song, and Tin Pan Alley, her music explores the questions surrounding the linguistic, representation, and technical demands placed on the body. This evening’s performance spotlights material in the language of the album she released on VDSQ, a label dedicated to the future of acoustic solo guitar music. Her guitar music has as much to do with the histories and languages of the guitar that she leaves out as it does with the languages she invents. This program of solo guitar music will integrate some of her sung material, but will primarily live in the rarefied, aesthetic world that the “Its Shape Is Your Touch” record introduces to you.

Opening the evening is the incomparable, innovative, standard-setting guitarist and songwriter Chris Weisman, singing and playing new, unreleased work as well as gems from the his massive catalog.

Ali Dineen , Frankie Sunswept and the Sunwrays & Starcrossed Losers 12/28

    7:30 $10.00 suggested donation

Ali Dineen has been performing her original music and songs from the American folk tradition in New York and across the United States for the past several years, drawing upon music ranging from 1920s American jazz to Eastern European polyphony. Her lyrics are poetic and deeply personal, using narrative to draw connections between personal experience and larger histories. Audiences across the country have been captivated by her breathtaking voice and the power of her songs’ messages. When not performing her original music, Ali also works with various projects including the Crimson Ragdolls and Bread and Puppet Theater, and works as a music educator. She is based in New York City.

STARCROSSED LOSERS is the title songwriter Kyle Morgan has given his ongoing musical/spiritual stumble through time.  Not really a band, not exactly a solo project, Losers is more like a continually-shifting musical collective gathered around the NYC-based singer and his evocative music.  For the past ten years, in collaboration with many a dear musical companion, Morgan has formed different iterations of Losers everywhere he’s lived: central Pennsylvania, southern Maine, the Cotswolds of England, and most recently, New York City.  With two full-length albums already under his belt, Morgan explores a range of styles in the “Americana” tradition, from stripped-down acoustic balladry and love-lorn parlor laments, to old-school rock’n’roll and distorted proto-punk.  Kyle is currently in the process prepping for STARCROSSED LOSERS’ third studio album to be recorded at Plaid Dog Recording in Boston, MA.

Frankie Sunswept and The Sunwrays play ‘cosmic r&b’, original songs reminiscent of Smokey Robinson, Roy Orbison and solo John Lennon records. The Sunwrays consist of Rachel Housle on drums, Sean Cronin on bass, Kyle Morgan on vocals and lead guitar, Ernie Vega on lap steel, and Frankie Sunswept on vocals, guitar and piano. Frankie Sunswept has performed in 45 US states and 11 international countries, creating original music drawing inspiration from folk music, blues, r&b and soul, to garage, surf, and rock n’ roll.
