  Acoustic original and traditional folk music and songs.
  Ali Dineen and Eleonore Weill are a Brooklyn-based duo who perform original music, drawing from their personal stories, as well as folk music from their own backgrounds in American folk and Occitanian traditional music. Ali is a native New Yorker with a love for Spirituals, 1920s jazz and other folk traditions from around the world. Eleonore was born in Southern France and has studied and performed a wide range of musical traditions in voice and wooden recorder, from klezmer to Renaissance choral music. Together they are creating a set of songs that tell stories, through voice and visuals.

  Eli Smith is a musician, writer, researcher and promoter of folk music living in Brooklyn, NY. Eli plays and sings traditional American songs and tunes on the banjo, guitar and harmonica. He is a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist and produces two folk festivals annually, the Brooklyn Folk Festival in the Spring and Washington Square Park Folk Festival in the Fall. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival and numerous other concert venues. Eli has recorded with his old time string band The Down Hill Strugglers, as well as with Peter Stampfel (of the Holy Modal Rounders/Fugs) and John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers). The Down Hill Strugglers were featured on the soundtrack album to the Coen Brothers’ film “Inside Llewyn Davis,” produced by T Bone Burnett.   Zafer Tawil’s Tarab Quartet: Zafer Tawil on vocal, qanun and ney; Sami Abu Shumayz vocal and violin & Nezih Antakli on tabla and Riq, and Bassist TBA

  An accomplished Palestinian musician based in New York City, Zafer Tawil is a virtuoso on oud, violin, and qanoun, and is a master of Arabic percussion. He has performed with numerous musicians, ranging from the pop star Sting to avant-garde composer/performer Elliot Sharpe to masters of Arabic music such as Simon Shaheen, Chab Mami, Bassam Saba, and George Ziadeh, among many others. Zafer has composed music for a number of film soundtracks, most recently Jonathan Demme’s My Favorite American (not yet released), Rachel Getting Married, and the documentary Until When. He has held workshops on Arabic music at numerous universities throughout the United States.

  CDs include “Mumtastic,” by Shusmo; Gaida Hinawi’s debut CD, “Levantine Indulgence”; and two CDs by Amir AlSaffar’s Two Rivers: “Two Rivers Musicians,” and the yet-to-be-released, “Enaana.”

  Born in L.A. and raised in Harlem, 18 year-old Cold Casper makes his live debut, celebrating the release of his first album “Into the Evening Again.” In his previous incarnation as Solemn Diver, he contributed guitar loops and rhymes to Tritone, Taharqa, Thot Hunter as well as opening shows for Lydia Lunch and John Parish. His guitar playing evokes John Fahey and Tallest Man On Earth, and he says he’s influenced by Hank Williams and Bobby Charles, but also cites Deathgrips, Swans and Ratking as his favorite bands. Cold Casper says he wants his audience to “shut up and cry.”

   One of the most celebrated and idiosyncratic American songwriters of his generation, Mark Eitzel is best known as the leader of the iconic indie rock band American Music Club, who spun beautifully chaotic webs of guitar from Eitzel’s gloomy but compassionate studies of lost souls and alcohol; since striking out on his own, Eitzel has embraced a number of different musical approaches, while his witty but downcast lyrical style has remained constant.

  With her character Nurse Bibs, Sally Norvell provided comic relief in Wim Wenders’ masterpiece Paris Texas. She later formed the band Congo Norvell with Kid Congo Powers (Cramps, Gun Club, Nick Cave) and the partnership grew into a popular 90s cult band recording and touring all over the USA and EU. Sally is currently working on a historical romance novel, “Poe, a Metaphysical Love Story”, a dark tale about the life of Edgar Allan Poe.

  The last time Little Annie, tortured soul singer, painter, actor and author, stepped in front of a New York audience was at Town Hall in a tribute to Edith Piaf. “The most compelling of several oddballs was Little Annie.” wrote Stephen Holden in The New York Times. Debuting songs from her upcoming Tin Angel Records release “Trace” this will be a rare New York appearance for the dub diva who now makes her home in Miami.

  French singer, and general malcontent F. Blasco—aka Blasco Ballroom—arrived in Virginia at the end of the last century and together with Sparklehorse guitarist and trumpeter Paul “Watty” Watson made one of the all-time best records hardly anybody ever heard: “Film.” He recently told Watty he had some new songs and for the first time in years, the duo, with PW at the piano will be performing in New York.

  And The Wiremen is masterminded by sultry southern guitarist and singer Lynn Wright. Taking advantage of Watty’s foray to NYC, ATW will also be joined by multi-instrumentalist Jon Petrow and violinist Simon Goff. On their last European tour the Berliner Zeitung said they’d “provide the perfect soundtrack for a Quentin Tarantino movie.” Lynn worked with Alexander Hacke on the score for Fatih Akin’s “The Cut.” and in a previous life as James Hall’s guitarist.

  Thomas Truax, who Time Out calls “The king of home-made instruments” is the world’s only Hornicator, Backbeater and Stringaling Virtuoso. Along with his drummer Mother Superior, he has spent the last 15 years traveling the world performing with his evolving “band” of bizarre self-made Harry Partch-esque instruments. His numerous collaborators have included Jarvis Cocker, Amanda Palmer, Richard Hawley and Duke Special. Currently based in London and Krefeld, Germany, this show will be Truax’s first NY show in over five years.

  Straddling the worlds of music, art, performance and theater, Joseph Keckler has garnered acclaim for his rich, versatile 3+ octave voice and sharp wit. In 2013 Dixon Place commissioned his most recent performance piece, I am an Opera. He was recently featured on BBC America’s The Nerdist and WNYC Soundcheck, and has appeared at venues including South by Southwest, Joe’s Pub, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Merkin Hall, and BAM. He has received residencies from MacDowell and Yaddo, as well as a Franklin Furnace Grant and a Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Work from New York Foundation for the Arts. The Village Voice named him “Best Downtown Performance Artist, 2013.” He is currently playing Chaliapin in Dave Malloy’s Preludes, running at Lincoln Center.

  Renowned animal portraitist Phil Puleo, is the drummer and hammer-dulcimer player in Swans. Cop Shoot Cop keyboardist, soundtrack composer and JG Thirlwell collaborator and mad scientist Jim Coleman will play the hurdy-gurdy, melodica and a pile of analog modules never before wired up in public. Paul Wallfisch will step away from the piano to test what happens when he plugs in a bass.

  Birdthrower has crawled on hands and knees up Broadway from the Battery to Washington Heights. When he’s not crawling, he writes timelessly simple songs of love lost and found on his Teeny Genie and an acoustic guitar. Together, these four are Gaudete, named after Ted Hughes’ book-length poem he intended as a film. Gaudete just recorded 3 tracks for Martin Bisi’s 35th anniversary celebration. This is their world premiere performance.

  Valerie Kuehne is a cross-pollinated work of chaos. Fusing together music, performance art, narrative, and experimental curation, she has been told that, “if this music thing doesn’t work out, she’d probably make an awesome cult leader.” (Boston Public Space).‘ Cello virtuoso, storyteller, performance artist, singer, curator at Panoply Performance Laboratory and all-around iconoclastic firecracker Valerie Kuehne is a mainstay of new music in New York. Ms. Kuehne’s work operates under principles of surprise, and investigates obsession, comedy, decay, forensic pathology, sex, hypnogogia, viscera, spirituality & death. She is one half of the duo Naked Roots Conducive, one third of the trio Prehistoric Horse, and a histrionic version of herself.   Singer/ Multi-Instrumentalist Sharief Hobley has worked with John Legend, Rufus Wainwright, Jaguar Wright, Chocolate Genius and many others.

  Brahim Fribgane – Born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco, Brahim brings to his music the rich and varied musical styles he grew up with – North African, Gnawa, Berber, Arabic, Andulusian music, and any other styles he has encountered throughout his prolific career in New York. His oud style ranges from the clear, “singable” melodies of folkloric Berber songs to beautifully complex and soulful Arabic music, to the fusion of jazz, samba, reggae or Indian music. When Brahim picks up any of the numerous percussion instruments he favors, it’s tough to sit still. And his singing voice is straightforward and honest… Brahim sings his songs, and you get the message. A remarkably creative and diverse musician, Brahim’s music reflects his openness and appreciation of all cultures and their music.

  Amino Belyamani – Born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco, Amino has been based in New York since 2009 as a full-time musician. Amino’s music reflects the diversity of his influences – complex african rhythms, arabic melodies, western classical music, jazz and electro-acoustic music. One can witness this richness in the various ensembles Amino leads and co-leads in New York – the critically acclaimed Dawn of Midi, the microtonal and hypnotic SSAHHA, the traditional Ewe ensemble from Ghana – Bedstuy Ewe, and the traditional gnawa music ensemble – Innov Gnawa.   PLG Arts Chamber Music will present an afternoon of music performed by Osso on Sunday, April 17th. They’ll be performing music by Mozart, John Adams and more, joined by Katie Scheele on oboe. This is the fifth concert in the PLG Arts Chamber Music series in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

  Osso fuses the classical sensibilities of a string quartet with the pulse of pop culture. Their rhythmically driven rep and ambitious commissioning forge new territory within the classical tradition. With an exuberant commitment to collaboration, Osso has spent the past twelve years touring, performing, and recording with artists such as Jay-Z, Kanye West, John Legend, The National, My Brightest Diamond, and Sufjan Stevens.   Georgian born singer and guitarist, Ilusha ცინაძე [Tsinadze], brings his life story to the stage through a captivating take on Georgia’s venerable folk traditions.  Born in Tbilisi and raised in New York, Ilusha introduces mountain songs and village dances into conversation with the global city, connecting two worlds separated by mountains and seas, history and culture.

  Julia Patinella is a multilingual singer who currently resides between Seville, Spain and Brooklyn, NY. Through years of travel between Spain and Latin America, she developed as a Flamenco singer with a unique affinity for “Cantes de Ida y Vuleta” or “roundtrip songs” – subgenres born through the circular migrations of peoples between Spain, Latin America and the Caribbean.   After half a million miles of inspiration on the road, New York City multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Mage brings home a set of intimate, funky, apocalyptic and hopeful songs. Mage played B-3 organ in gospel church and broke his nose in a mosh pit, and then years later he broke it again on a Steinway grand piano. In between, he studied with Baba Olatunji, Alan Ginsberg, James Hurt, Fred Frith, Yusef Lateef, Srinivasan in Varanasi, and Pupy Pedroso in Havana. He toured from Istanbul to Antigua with soul jazz artist Lizz Wright, afro beat queen Wunmi, and dub crew the Easy Star All Stars.

   

  

   

  Raised in the redwood splendor of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Brooklyn-based pianist Richard Sears is a rising force on the jazz scene who has distinguished himself as a fierce improviser and ambitious composer. His latest album “Skyline” (2015) came out on the Barcelona based label Fresh Sound Records, and the critically hailed trio session affirmed his status as a player of prodigious promise. For this program, Richard will be presenting improvisations, and original music.

Together, Leah Hennessy, Jacob Means, and Brad Barrett explore their relationship to traditional music through their experience as improvisers, drawing material from Methodist hymnals, the Carter Family, Muddy Waters and Blind Willie Johnson.   Formed in the winter of 1999 for Tonic’s legendary midnight shows, MTO has preached their music from the stages of Bonaroo all the way to Finland and now in Brooklyn. NPR’s All Things Considered described Steven Bernstein’s Millennial Territory Orchestra like this: ‘MTO slides between the old and the new, taking musical cues from talented but little-known jazz bands from the 1920s and ’30s that worked the juke joints and ballrooms of the Cotton Belt and the Midwest.’ Indeed Bernstein and company embrace vintage sounds and tweak them through their very own post-modern filter. Classics like ‘Viper Song’ and ‘Its Tight Jim’ are reinvented to speak in the 21st century, without sacrificing any big band swing authenticity. More contemporary fair like The Beatles’ ‘All You Need Is Love’ are treated as if they straight from Count Basie’s repertoire. With Doug Wieselman, Peter Apfelbaum, Erik Lawrence, Charlie Burnham, Brian Drye, Ben Allison, Alison Miller and Steve Cardenas.

  Cassidy Andrews picked up a guitar when a woman broke her heart for the first time at age 13. After a few years, she went on connect with audiences about all things melancholy, attempting to compensate for sad songs with jokes and charm. After playing venues varying from zoos to colleges, bars to music halls, cafes to living rooms, there’s a comfort and love for creating music you feel from her performance. Besides songwriting, Andrews has perfected the art of juggling her guitar, coffee thermos, and MetroCard while SnapChatting blonde jokes aimed at herself. //
  The gifted, versatile saxophonist/clarinetist/composer John Ellis occupies an imaginary (and extremely imaginative) space directly between the celebratory, welcoming spirit of New Orleans and the edgy, frantic streets of New York City.
  The North Carolina native has established himself as one of New York’s premier tenor saxophonists, working with artists as diverse as John Patitucci, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charlie Hunter, and Sting. Ellis has released nine albums as a leader, while his discography lists more than 100 album credits as a sideman.

Since taking up the instrument at six, he has received numerous accolades as a classical musician and performed throughout the United States and Southern Europe. The son of an actor, his playing is characterized by a heightened sense of drama and narrative, and he communicates through his guitar with a striking rhetorical sincerity. With his recent move to Brooklyn, Colin is revisiting his root inspirations through two innovative, popularly-influenced collaborations with his friends Lacy Rose and Ryan Dodge.

  David Cieri began playing the violin at the age of three, but switched to the piano at the ripe old age of six. He has studied with members of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and with ECM recording artist Art Lande, and he has performed his original compositions at such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Cieri’s film-scoring work includes Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War (with Trent Reznor and Yo-Yo Ma, Florentine Films, in post-production), The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (Florentine Films, 2014), The Address (Florentine Films, 2014), Prohibition (with Wynton Marsalis, Florentine Films, 2011), Baseball: The Tenth Inning (Florentine Films, 2010) and the Emmy-winning National Parks (Florentine Films, 2008), Barak Goodman’s Emmy-nominated The Emperor of All Maladies (Ark Media, 2015), and a short directed by George Lucas for The Academy of Arts and Sciences called “The Heart of the Matter” (2014). His original score for Raymond De Felitta’s Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story was listed for an Oscar nomination in 2013.

  Danielle Blau’s Rhyme and Reason: Poets and Philosophers on the Questions that Matter is forthcoming from W.W. Norton. She won first place for her poetry in the 2015 multi-genre Narrative 30 Below Contest, and her chapbook mere eye was selected for a Poetry Society of America Chapbook Award and published in 2013 with an introduction by D.A. Powell. Blau’s poems, short stories, articles, and interviews have also appeared and are forthcoming in such publications as The Atlantic online, The Baffler, Black Clock, The Harvard Review, The Literary Review, Narrative Magazine, The New Yorker’s book blog, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, The Saint Ann’s Review, The Wolf, and the Argos Books poetry anthology Why I Am Not a Painter. A graduate of Brown University with an honors degree in philosophy, and of NYU with an MFA in poetry, she teaches at the City University of  New York.

  Jean Rohe and Liam Robinson met a decade ago through their love of participatory music-making and American folk song. Their cowritten songs are inspired by the traditions they hold dear and shine with elegant vocal harmonies and detailed arrangements for guitar, banjo, and accordion. Whether in small clubs or on festival stages, Robinson & Rohe’s performances are intimate gatherings in which listeners are invited to share in the music-making. Acclaimed songwriters and performers in their own rights, they bring with them a wealth of creative experience: Liam was a cast member in the Tony Award-winning play, “Warhorse” and recently music directed the hit Off-Broadway folk opera “Hadestown” by songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. He routinely tours with the Becca Stevens Band. Jean’s songwriting has won accolades from the Independent Music Awards, ASCAP, and the Montreux Jazz Festival vocal contest. This year, her song “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” was published in the latest edition of the popular songbook Rise Up Singing and she was a Troubadour finalist at the 2016 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

  As a little girl Ann Weller was setting fairy-tales into music on her piano. Today she writes songs together with producer and guitarist Boris Meinhold and drummer Benny Glass. Her warm, fragile voice and her classically influenced piano style are enveloped in minimalistic drum grooves and a mystic-surf guitar. It shines through that the band is resident within the Berlin electronic club scene.

  Charlie Burnham is one of Brooklyn’s own musical treasures– a fiddler, singer, and multi-instrumentalist renowned for the depth of his musicality and imagination, who over the course of four decades has collaborated with a dizzying array of artists ranging from Henry Threadgill to Norah Jones to Jai Uttal to Living Color. His compadre Skye Steele is another restless fiddler and singer who has cobbled together a unique voice out of musical adventures in New York City, Brazil, Turkey, and beyond. 

  The duo is joined tonight by their superlative friends and allies, Joanna Sternberg on bass, and Ilusha Tsinadze on guitar.

  Gabriel Birnbaum is a multi-instrumentalist and composer living in Brooklyn, New York. He has performed on stage and on record with artists such as Sharon Van Etten, Rodriguez, Jens Lekman and Lady Lamb the Beekeeper at venues like Lincoln Center, the Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Kennedy Center, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and the Ojai Music Festival. He is a full time member of the Ethiopian pop ensemble Debo Band, whose Sub Pop debut was one of NPR’s 50 best albums of 2012, and the cosmic Americana of Wilder Maker, lauded by Stereogum, CMJ, Paste and many many more, is the latest in a series of vessels for his own writing. In 2015 he launched Genius Loci, the first in a series of curatorial projects, and was selected as an artist in residence at both the ISLAND Hill House and Wildacres Retreat.

  Sam Harris grew up in Dallas, Texas. He studied classical piano with Janet Jones and competed regularly on the local and statewide level. While attending Booker T. Washington High School for the Arts, he discovered jazz and began taking lessons with local piano legend Bill Lohr. In 2004, he moved to New York, where he currently resides, and has since been busy performing in bands led by artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Ben Van Gelder, Logan Richardson, Roman Filiu, Gretchen Parlato, and Rudy Royston. He has appeared at venues and festivals in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. In January 2014 he released his debut album, “Interludes,” on Fresh Sound New Talent.

  Curtis (Robert) Macdonald is an alto saxophonist, composer and producer whose works blend composition, sound design and improvisation. He has received commissions from Aszure Barton & Artists, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Kate Weare Company, Hubbard Street Dance, Bayerisches Staatsballett (The Bavarian State Ballet), Larry Keigwin & Co. and The Juilliard School. In 2014, he was co-awarded the first Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation Prize for his collaboration with Aszure Barton on the dance Awáa. Curtis has released three albums as a bandleader, authored a book on saxophone technique and is faculty at The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music. Curtis is also a producer for Q2 Music at WQXR/WNYC and was honored to receive a Peabody Award in 2015. Curtis also works closely with the great American composer, multi-instrumentalist and 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Threadgill, as a member of his ensemble “Double-Up”.

  Saxophonist/pianist/composer Peter Apfelbaum presents his newest band, Sparkler. This vocal-heavy and electronica-driven sextet offers the kind of densely layered, polyrhythmic music which Apfelbaum has long been known for with his world music big band, Hieroglyphics, but with generous helpings of silence and more of an emphasis on songs – songs which cover such subjects as the ambidextrous nature of the universe, lucky numbers, the continual disappearance of things and the secret oils that drive the grass.

  A collaborative trio that met during their final year at the New England Conservatory in the fall of 2015, The Gown of Entry has worked in an improvised setting ever since. The group’s members, Alec Harper (tenor saxophone), Eliot Cardinaux (piano, spoken word), and Aaron Edgcomb (drums, percussion, cymbals), interlace both brightly lyrical and somber melodies with open gestures of form, infiltrating texture and silence alike, crafting resonant, panoramic palates threaded through with lines of their pianist’s original poetry.

  BULLA EN EL BARRIO is a community and a space in New York City to explore 

  at a deeper level the bullerengue tradition born in Colombia in the Urabá and 

  Atlantic regions of the country.  Bullerengue has evolved over the curse of 600 years, since Africans first arrival to what is now Colombia, to be what it is still today: A manifestation specially from Afro, indigenous, mixed race and marginalized communities to express themselves culturally, socially and spiritually through music and dance. Women’s leadership and their power to engage communities into creative processes also characterize bullerengue and this is why through our music, dance, the stories that these songs tell, and in general, through all our interactions with diverse audiences, Bulla En El Barrio also aims to encourage individuals and communities to explore ancestral practices and legacies that celebrate life and heritage

Cieri’s film-scoring work includes Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War (with Trent Reznor and Yo-Yo Ma, Florentine Films, in post-production), The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (Florentine Films, 2014), The Address (Florentine Films, 2014), Prohibition (with Wynton Marsalis, Florentine Films, 2011), Baseball: The Tenth Inning (Florentine Films, 2010) and the Emmy-winning National Parks (Florentine Films, 2008), Barak Goodman’s Emmy-nominated The Emperor of All Maladies (Ark Media, 2015), and a short directed by George Lucas for The Academy of Arts and Sciences called “The Heart of the Matter” (2014). His original score for Raymond De Felitta’s Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story was listed for an Oscar nomination in 2013.

  Danielle Blau’s Rhyme and Reason: Poets and Philosophers on the Questions that Matter is forthcoming from W.W. Norton. She won first place for her poetry in the 2015 multi-genre Narrative 30 Below Contest, and her chapbook mere eye was selected for a Poetry Society of America Chapbook Award and published in 2013 with an introduction by D.A. Powell. Blau’s poems, short stories, articles, and interviews have also appeared and are forthcoming in such publications as The Atlantic online, The Baffler, Black Clock, The Harvard Review, The Literary Review, Narrative Magazine, The New Yorker’s book blog, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, The Saint Ann’s Review, The Wolf, and the Argos Books poetry anthology Why I Am Not a Painter. A graduate of Brown University with an honors degree in philosophy, and of NYU with an MFA in poetry, she teaches at the City University of  New York.

  Pianist/composer/educator Frank Kimbrough has been active on the New York jazz scene for 35 years. He has recorded most recently for Pirouet, with previous recordings as a leader for Newvelle, Palmetto, OmniTone, and Soul Note. His work as a pianist and composer has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Aaron Copland Foundation, and Chamber Music America’s Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project. Frank was a founding member and composer-in- residence of the Jazz Composers Collective (1992 – 2005). He has toured and recorded with the Maria Schneider Orchestra since 1993, and appears on her multi-Grammy winning album “Winter Morning Walks” with Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and on her collaboration with David Bowie as well as the recently released “The

  Thompson Fields”. He has also worked with jazz legends Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, Paul Bley, and Lee Konitz among many others. He has toured throughout North and South America, Europe, Japan and Australia. Frank has served on the faculty of the Juilliard School’s Jazz Studies Program since 2008, and is also currently involved with Juilliard’s mentoring program.

   

  Born and raised in Cuba, David Virelles grew up in a musical family, his father being a singer-songwriter and his mother a flautist in the Santiago de Cuba Symphony. He started studying classical music at age seven, as well as being exposed to the large array of musical forms on the island. Eventually, David discovered his grandfather’s Jazz collection and also became interested in that tradition.

  In 2001, he left for Canada as a protégé of Canadian musician Jane Bunnett, with whom he recorded several albums (two of them Grammy nominated), toured and collaborated with on a number of projects. While in Canada, David graduated from the music program at Humber College. He studied privately with pianist Barry Harris and has also studied composition with the influential composer Henry Threadgill, which had a really deep impact in Virelles’s personal musical outlook. Over the years he has performed and/or recorded with: Steve Coleman and Five Elements, Henry Threadgill, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Andrew Cyrille, Hermeto Pascoal, José Luis Quintana, Changuito, Stanley Cowell, Rudresh Mahantappa, Horacio El Negro Hernández, Mark Turner, Paul Motian, Ben Street, Chris Potter, David Binney, Ravi Coltrane, Adam Rogers, Jeff Ballard, Jane Bunnet and Spirits of Havana, Miguel Zenón, Cuban visual artist Alberto Lescay, Howard Johnson, Dan Weiss, Adam Cruz Milestone Group, Jon Hendricks, Wadada Leo Smith, among others.

  Originally from the UK, Joy Askew has made New York City her home for over 30 years. Not only a singer/songwriter she has played and sung in bands with such luminary artists as Joe Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Jack Bruce and Rodney Crowell and in 1986 appeared in Laurie Anderson’s quintessential movie “Home Of The Brave”. Inspired by memories of growing up in the North of England, Joy has recorded her 5th album of original songs “Queen Victoria”, with The Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band from Yorkshire. “Queen Victoria” also features duets with Joe Jackson and Brit singers James Maddock and Adam Masterson. December 2nd show will be with a small brass band including Steven Bernstein and Marcus Rojas and Rhythm section Aaron Comess and Graham Maby.

   

  Tyrone Cotton’s music begins with folk blues, reaches outward to soul and rock and roll, landing firmly in the now. The influences of Dylan, Mississippi John Hurt, Hendrix and Jerry Garcia roll behind a lyrical power that Cotton first discovered in Langston Hughes. “Hughes worked hard and worked to a degree of excellence… he can take you to different worlds all historically accurate.  I find him courageous. He wasn’t afraid to be honest about where he was coming from.”

  

  In nearly 30 years of music making, Cotton has stayed close to his home of Louisville KY, making regular trips to New York City and Austin Texas to play. He has shared bills with James Hunter, Johnny Winter, Eric McFadden, and The Blind Boys Of Alabama. Ty’s first recording in 2005 featured Steve Ferguson of NRBQ, and he is currently finishing a new recording with the team of Josh Kaufman and Ray Rizzo, two longtime collaborators with music credits that include Bob Weir, Trixie Whitley, Josh Ritter and Dawn Landes. Recorded in Woodstock NY by Dan Goodwin at his IsOkOn Studio, the album features Stir Fried’s Vin Warner on bass and guest vocals by Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

  Born and raised in Scotland, and now based in Brooklyn, NY, Hannah Read is a versatile musician widely recognized on the International stage. She is known for her fiddle playing, songwriting, composing and was recently described as one of “the finest singers of the day” in the UK’s MOJO magazine. Hannah spent her childhood between Edinburgh and the Isle of Eigg (a remote island off the west coast of Scotland) followed by musical studies in Paris and Boston. These very different places and landscapes have shaped and influenced her sound, which can be clearly heard through her original music. With one solo album – ‘Wrapped in Lace’ – and another to be released in 2017, Hannah is also involved in projects both sides of the Atlantic, including the critically acclaimed British supergroup ‘Songs of Separation’. She records and plays regularly with many New York based bands and musicians including Ember Isles, Jefferson Hamer and John Fatum. ≠ ≠ ≠ Rachel Ries, hailing from the prairies of middle America, crafts sly and compassionate songs for the crooked-hearted. With an electric guitar and piano; a clear voice and steady hand; she deftly pulls listeners in with disarming candor and holds them there with smart and tender poetry. Her most recent record, Ghost of a Gardener, features a duet with Gregory Alan Isakov, members of Cuddle Magic & RVSQ and earned her an interview on NPR’s Weekend Edition.   Elliott Goldkind has composed music for diverse media, ranging from orchestral and chamber music to film, television, and commercials.

  Elliott’s classical/concert music has been performed throughout the United States and Western Europe. His film scoring work has led to collaborations with Jeff Buckley, David Mamet and many talented young directors.

  Elliott received his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At the UW-Madison, he helped revive the UW-Madison Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group that is dedicated to performing the music of Wisconsin students/composers.  He is a MacDowell Colony fellow and the recipient of New York University’s Langley Fellowship.

  Elliott was a founding member of the not-too-legendary New York rock bands “Bones Jones and the Jones Tones,” “Hodgepodge Lodge,” and “Freak of Nature.” Like too many others, Elliott is a native New Yorker living in Los Angeles.

After playing venues varying from zoos to colleges, bars to music halls, cafes to living rooms, there’s a comfort and love for creating music you feel from her performance. Besides songwriting, Andrews has perfected the art of juggling her guitar, coffee thermos, and MetroCard while SnapChatting blonde jokes aimed at herself. // 

   

  Emily Wolfe is a singer/songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY. Emily grew up in small town Wisconsin and was drawn to music at an early age, playing violin, piano, and guitar. When she discovered singing, she felt a shift in the way she saw in herself and the world around her. Now in NYC, she’s already gained attention as a smart writer and beautiful singer, singing backup vocals around town and performing solo in the Village.
