7:00 Door 7:30 Show $12.00 suggested donationLate AsterLate Aster was formed when Aaron Messing (trumpet) and Anni Hochhalter (French horn) moved to San Francisco in 2019 and released its first EP, “True and Toxic,” in 2021 via Bright Shiny Things. The San Francisco Chronicle called the record, “as impressive a local debut as I’ve heard this year… you’re guaranteed to hear unprecedented sounds in Late Aster’s very cool collisions of brass instruments and electronic sounds.” Their performance at The Owl will be in celebration of their new EP “Live Rail Sessions” via Slow and Steady Records/Bright Shiny Things.Gregg Belisle-Chi’s HUM Quartet delivers new music written by the Brooklyn guitarist/composer. A guitarist “of impeccable technique and broad imagination” (New York Times) and “of mercurial interests yet grounded focus” (Earshot Jazz), Belisle-Chi has steadily been maintaining a career in the New York City music scene playing, recording, and touring with such luminaries as Tim Berne, Reid Anderson, Tom Rainey, Hank Roberts, Bill Frisell, Emma Frank, and many more in the Jazz, Improvised, Rock, and Singer/Songwriter ethos.
With Sam Decker, saxophone •Noah Garabedian, bass • Jeff Davis, drums.Steven Lugerner’s SLUGish EnsembleLed by composer Steven Lugerner, SLUGish Ensemble performs inventive music that blurs the lines between pop, rhythm & blues, jazz improvisation & minimalism. A vehicle for his low end work on bass clarinet and baritone saxophone, SLUGish Ensemble grew out of Lugerner’s years in San Francisco soaking up the striking orchestrational concepts of the 1970s minimalist classical movement combined with what he calls “heavy West Coast-sounding hardcore-math-alt-rock.” They return to The Owl with an album release party to celebrate their new Slow and Steady Records album, “In Solitude.”
