Queens-based singer-songwriter Kyle Morgan grew up in central Pennsylvania, where he spent countless Sunday mornings amidst the broken strains and coffee breath of his church congregation.  His first album, Starcrossed Losers, became the alias under which he would release two more, each featuring his distinctive conglomeration of Americana styles, from stripped-down acoustic ballads and love-lorn parlor laments to roaring alt-country and throwback 60’s rock’n’roll.  Kyle returns to The Owl Music Parlor celebrating the release of “Ransom The Captive Heart”, the second single from a forthcoming LP, “Younger at Most Everything,” out on Team Love Records February 25th, 2022.

Steph Richards is no stranger to challenging listeners’ expectations, but the trumpeter, composer and bandleader is pushing in a still more unusual direction with her new project Supersense. Touring with a group of brilliantly creative improvisers—Joshua White (piano), Stomu Takeishi (bass) and Max Jaffe (drums and electronics) —Richards taps acclaimed multimedia artist Sean Raspet to create singular, abstract scents embedded into concert programs using scent to prompt musicians and the audience in a way that avoids language and representation completely.

Yuma Uesaka (b. 1991) is a reedist, improviser, and composer known for his work in modern creative jazz, avant-garde, and new classical music.
This performance at The Owl will mark the debut of his acoustic solo set on the Bb and contrabass clarinets, which was mainly conceived and developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York-based composer, saxophonist, and flutist Anna Webber, called “one of the most exciting new arrivals on the New York avant-garde jazz scene” by Peter Margasak in the Chicago Reader, has been working with her Simple Trio since 2013. The trio features bandmates John Hollenbeck on drums and Matt Mitchell on piano. The music of the Simple Trio highlights what The New York Times called the “range of the group members: fulminous, intense collective improvisation” in songs that feel like living things and lead the audience in different directions on each listen. Their third album, Idiom, was released to significant critical acclaim in 2021, following on the heels of two albums on Skirl Records: Binary (2016) and SIMPLE (2014).

Rbke / Adeline Hotel Feb 25

    7:30 Door 8pm Show

RBKE is the moniker of harpist and singer-songwriter Rebecca El-Saleh. RBKE released their first EP in 2008 with Lymbyc Systym’s Mike Bell and then made their way out to the west coast. They released their second EP in 2012, recorded at Tiny Telephone and produced by John Vanderslice. After a spell in Toronto studying with Judy Loman, and a moment in southern california, RBKE moved to New York and released their most recent EP “Break Through Arrive Here” produced by Zubin Hensler. Their debut full length album, also produced by Zubin Hensler, will be released in late 2022 or early 2023. Their music draws from their classical background, as well as their folk and electronic interests. RBKE has recently transitioned to an electric harp to explore textures beyond what the harp can organically offer.

The Cherries Are Speaking is the sixth album by Dan Knishkowy’s Adeline Hotel, and second of 2021. Eschewing the intricate guitar work of Good Timing in favor of breezy piano lines inspired by Ethiopian jazz, Cherries is a series of miniature baroque pop songs and, quietly, his most ambitious work to date. The playing is often supported by just bass and drums, before pastoral wind and string orchestrations creep in, informed at turns by Judee Sill’s neo-classicism and the mystic woodwinds of ‘80s Van Morrison. The Cherries Are Speaking’s recapitulations of and daring shifts away from Knishkowy’s previous work feed into its musical and thematic depth, which speaks far beyond the real-world context of its writing. The album is a bold but unforced gesture from an artist whose creative lifeblood is the sense of constantly pushing forward, creating new links in a daisy chain of a discography which seems to compound upon itself in significance with each new entry.

Emerging from the antifolk scene of the late 2000’s, Isaac Gillespie is a NY-based songwriter, performer and man-about-town. Blending folk-song storytelling with the energy of punk and the elasticity of gospel, the Gillespie-fronted The Due Diligence was a mainstay of 2010’s Brooklyn DIY. All the while, Gillespie continued to write and perform (and in 2019 release) the more delicate songs of his acoustic beginnings. Over the years he’s had the honor to write and record with everyone from Shakey Graves to Landlady’s Adam Schatz as well as members of BLEACHERS, Phosphorescent, Son Lux and Ava Luna.

Tica Douglas is the musical moniker of TJ, a hospital chaplain and songwriter. Writing songs is an outlet for TJ’s emotions and observations, about themself and the world.  2015’s Joey (Pitchfork, Impose) explored the pains and blessings of being nonbinary; 2017’s Our Ladystar of the Sea, Help and Protect Us (MTV, Bandcamp) narrated TJ’s search for meaning as a non-religious person attending seminary; and 2020’s Lo was an unflinching account of struggles with addiction.

TJ’s melodic sensibility and storytelling prowess, often sung through personal and relatable vignettes, keeps records with heavy themes feeling supremely listenable.

Bergamot String Quartet / Sonya Belaya Feb 27

    7:30 Door 8pm Show

Bergamot Quartet is an NYC-based ensemble specializing in contemporary music for string quartet; they aim to place this new, genre-bending music in meaningful dialogue with the histories that precede it. Comprised of Ledah Finck, Sarah Thomas, Amy Tan, and Irene Han, the group is currently graduate quartet in residence at the Mannes School of Music. They are delighted to reunite with Sonya Belaya after their collaboration on her residency at Roulette Intermedium, and will also be performing “Arcade” by Charles Peck, “The Answers” by Julie Zhou, “Pasemisí Pasemisá” by Christian Quiñones, and “Metamorphoses nocturnes” by György Ligeti.

Sonya Belaya brings a new band (Tomas Fujiwara – drums, Doyeon Kim – gayageum Adam O-Farrill – trumpet) to play music for the present moment – a workshop of songs and material for her upcoming Roulette commission “New Childhood”. After their initial performance got cancelled in March 2020, Belaya is over the moon to be finally convening with these incredible musicians. Some Soviet bard songs will emerge (but we aren’t surprised).

Rich Saunders and Julia Easterlin Mar 12

When Rich Saunders was a child, he and his family would spend long, relaxing afternoons sitting in a circle, singing together in the way that only blood relatives truly can: creating close harmonies whose naturally blending tones seem the result of some kind of inbuilt genetic code. Fast forward a couple of decades and, though much has happened in the interim – a period as one-third of Universal-signed group Thirdstory; a stint singing backing vocals for Chance the Rapper; a trans-Atlantic, more experimental duo going by the name Refs – it’s still those magical vocal moments that are at the crux, however now they’re coming primarily from the singer himself under new, voice-centric solo project Rich.

Julia Easterlin is a singer, songwriter, looper and baritone ukulelist whose music draws from elements of chamber-pop, world-beat, folk and contemporary classical music. Julia has performed and composed in collaboration with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Jacob Collier , Vieux Farka Touré, Bill T. Jones and Kris Bowers, among others. Her most recent achievement came in 2020, when she won First Place in an internet talent show adjudicated by T-Pain. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her partner, her cat and her tortoise.

The Very Starcrossed WishWrays Mar 24

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Finally resurrected after years of Covid delays, this long-planned night is dedicated to the four way musical relationship of Sean Cronin, Rachel Housle, Kyle Morgan and Frankie Sunswept, all of whom will be presenting their own songs and supporting the others throughout the night.

Frankie Sunswept is a songwriter and artist based in Queens, NY. He draws inspiration from a myriad of genres including folk, blues, r&b, soul, garage, surf, and rock n’ roll, and crafts original “cosmic r&b”. The Sunwrays are:Frankie Sunswept- guitar, piano, vox Rachel Housle- drums, vox Sean Cronin- bass, vox Kyle Morgan- guitar, piano, vox

Brooklyn-based songwriter Kyle Morgan grew up in central Pennsylvania where he began recording his first album while bussing tables at the local Olive Garden.  The name of that record, Starcrossed Losers, also served as the band name for the ever-changing line-up of musicians backing him up from PA to New England.  It was during his four years living in Portland, Maine that Kyle first crossed paths with Frankie Sunswept, then performing in his New Hampshire-based rock band Crushed Out.  After both had moved to NYC in 2018, Kyle joined Frankie’s new project The Sunwrays along with bassist Sean Cronin and drummer Rachel Housle.  Before long Kyle had incorporated all three musicians into the latest iteration of Starcrossed Losers, and begun playing in Housle’s band WishWish, and Cronin’s Very Good.

WishWish is the full band expression of the songs of Brooklyn musician Rachel Housle.  With a background as a side person on drums for such acts as Invisible Familiars, the punk and no-wave band NoPop, and the Fahey-inflected rootsy chaos of Uncivilized, Housle brings a wide range of influences to her original composition.  Her recently self-released EP, “From a Ceiling” is an exploration into isolation, community, authenticity, and the haunted spaces in-between using nothing but voice, guitar and a four-track tape machine.

    Brian Prunka, oud
    Sarah Mueller, violin
    Eric Allen, cello

The emphatic, inescapable melodicism of Brian Prunka’s music is the thread that connects his jazz background and his nearly 20 years in NYC’s Arabic music scene.  Drawing on the Arabic maqam tradition, his original compositions are filtered through a deeply-rooted jazz sensibility and a resolute focus on the supremacy of melody.  Lending their talents to his music for this performance are musicians who likewise have a foot in two (or more) traditions: Award-winning cellist Eric Allen has a background in jazz and classical music, as well as Arabic and Indian classical music. Violinist Sarah Mueller has performed with with folk ensemble Forêt Endormie, Sicilian/Calabrian folk music with Malandrino, the New York Arabic Orchestra, as well as various Americana and Balkan music groups. Drummer Philip Mayer, a longtime collaborator in Sharq Attack as well as Prunka’s guitar trio and other groups, has an extensive resume from indie rock to jazz to Arabic and Turkish music, including such diverse artists as Natalie Merchant, Kishi Bashi, Nano Raies, and Hazmat Modine.

She embraces the title of composer-performer often, possessing a wealth of performance experience as not only a classically-trained pianist of 16+ years, but also as a vocalist and most recently as a player of several instruments from the African continent, including the mbira and djembe. Her art seeks to bridge her diverse influences — from her penchant for experimentation & improvisation, to her African upbringing and Western classical training — together into a mélange of accessible, evocative, and meaningful art.

Alexia Avina / Nighttime / Marjorie, April 2

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Alexia Avina is an experimental ambient-folk artist born and raised in Southeast Asia, previously based in Montreal and now living in Brooklyn. Her most recent album Unearth was released jointly by Topshelf Records (US) and Lost Map (UK) and captures much about what makes her so special – minimal, arrhythmic and tempo-based looping, ethereal melodic hooks, beauty, spaciousness and restraint. The follow up to Unearth, A Little Older, is set to release end of April on Lost Map Records.

“As Nighttime, Goodman performs warm bedroom folk that sounds unearthed from the year 1970 alongside the likes of Sibylle Baier and Vashti Bunyan. Contemplative arrangements of acoustic guitar and violin; gossamer webs of vocal harmonies; and enigmatic lyrics feting the changing of the seasons are swaddled in gently reverbed production that sounds both intimate and expansive.” – Stephanie Barclay, Bandcamp

Marjorie is songwriter and vocalist Melodie Stancato and multi-instrumentalist Zachary Taube. The group’s debut EP, Doesn’t Exist, pours a silver substance down the ear, equal parts soporific and stimulant, a chemistry of torpor and turmoil. Low, slow, and spotted with reverb, the duo’s compositions have a delicate, music-box quality. As each note warps and decays, the listener is made woozy, pliable, susceptible to suggestion.

Sara Schoenbeck & Wayne Horvitz / Bobby Previte and Ray Anderson April 7

    7:30 Door 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

    Sara Schoenbeck/Wayne Horviz: Cell Walk

The pair operates here at the midpoint between chamber music and jazz, performing spare and often disarmingly lovely compositions that flow into free-roaming yet hyper-attuned improvisation, sometimes accented by subtle electronics. Recorded in summer 2019 and January of this year, this is music of otherworldly calm, filled with purposeful pauses, and built around the balletic coordination of two musicians sharing the same space. Put another way, it’s the sonic antithesis of 2020 — a memento from a simpler, more connected time. – Hank Shteamer Rolling StoneRay

One of the seminal figures of the 1980s New York ‘Downtown’ scene, Bobby Previte has received multiple awards including the 2015 Greenfield Prize for Music and a 2012 Guggenheim.  From his instrument, the drums, Previte has led a plethora of ensembles worldwide for forty years. “He can break your heart with one cymbal crash.”

Named five straight years as best trombonist in the DownBeat Critics Poll and declared “the most exciting slide brass player of his generation” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, Ray Anderson has led a daunting assortment of tradition-minded and experimental groups, big bands, blues and funk projects and even a trombone quartet.  On a series of acclaimed recordings, he has ranged from Ellingtonia and jazz classics to striking originals.

This is their first duo concert.

    7:30 Door 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Since 2014, Eleanor Buckland has been one-third of Lula Wiles, the Boston-based folk-rock trio that has become an acoustic music scene favorite with their three critically hailed albums. For much of this time, however, Buckland was also working on another musical project – her own album. You Don’t Have To Know (released on October 29) spotlights a different side of Buckland’s musical interests as it sets her deeply personal songs against inventive indie rock arrangements.

“Buckland’s folksy drawl plays perfectly with this fresh set of pop tunes that are seemingly built for fans of contemporary FM radio acts like Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift, both nostalgically rustic and immediately modern.” – WBUR

Robinson & Rohe is the duo of American songwriters Liam Robinson (banjo, accordion, vocals) & Jean Rohe (guitar, vocals). Tonight they take the stage with bandmates Christopher Tordini (bass) and Tony Mason (drums) to share songs from their forthcoming record, “Wait & See,” due out later this year.

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Sam Talmadge is a guitarist and composer currently living in Brooklyn NY. His solo guitar music is rooted in traditional fingerpicking but has absorbed the influence of many different genres and styles. In addition to playing solo, he plays electric in several bands in NY including The Slide Stops, Whale Noises, The Ladles as well as backing up a handful of singer songwriters.

Born and raised in rural Massachusetts and currently living in Brooklyn, NY—via Colorado and then Philadelphia—Eliza Edens weaves together disparate influences of people and place into her work to create mesmerizing sonic tapestries with guitar and voice. With a love for tinkering with alternate tunings à la Nick Drake, a curious harmonic ear from years of childhood classical piano lessons, and an ever-expanding affinity for words and stories, Edens’ songs build a kaleidoscopic world that documents the parallels between hope and heartbreak. The resulting sound is a diverse palette of guitar-based, experimental folk-rock centered around Edens gently cradled voice and brimming at the edges with pockets of sonic whimsy. After cutting her teeth touring the DIY and folk circuits around the Northeast for the past few years—playing everywhere from West Philly basements to folk mainstay Club Passim—Edens is currently putting the finishing touches on a new sophomore album.

the cradle is the music of brooklyn born artist paco cathcart. they started putting out tapes in 2013 and have put out multiple albums per year since then. they’ve also toured extensively, solo and with accompaniment, and play frequently in new york.

Raised on the central coast of California and currently living in Nashville, TN, singer and songwriter Elise Leavy has written more than 70 songs and has recorded two solo records of original material, accompanying herself on accordion, guitar, and piano. After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music and living in New York City for three years, she is thrilled to be preparing to release her third solo project, a group of songs written and recorded in Brooklyn, NY with a full band of amazing local musicians.

Foster Powell is a songwriter and composer born in Anacortes, WA and raised in Boston. Powell’s band is made up of Amy Anders and Daniel O’Connor (and sometimes others); the three friends met as students at Bennington College in Vermont and bonded over a shared obsession with 60s-era songwriting as well as more recent “unpopular pop” troubadors like Aimee Mann and Prefab Sprout.

Physical Kids is the folk duo of composers Alaina Ferris and Matt Schlatter. Their songs highlight a poetic lyricism, delicate harmonies, and instrumental arrangements — guitar, piano, cello, harp, and their two voices. “Our project is essentially our friendship manifest – we’ve been meeting once a week for over 10 years to talk about life, compose, and just hang out. Our songs are extensions of our conversations: what we’re reading, thinking, how we’re feeling, whether we’re running together, crying, or laughing. The music is a natural result of what feels like a simple (but, for us, profound) friendship and practice — an artistry in the quotidian, or magic in the everyday.  This show is celebrating the release of  their’ debut EP, In a Little House.

Rose Stoller is an NYC based multidisciplinary artist. She merges her influence of Contemporary Jazz, R&B, Laurel Canyon Folk Rock, and Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) into a corner of her own. Rose has worked as an actor and collaborator in various theatrical productions. Recent involvement include The Atlantic Center for the Arts (New Smyrna Beach, Florida), The New Harmony Project (Indianapolis), The Puzzle Festival of New Works (NYC).

A self-identified “singer-storyteller”, Emily Jeanne Brown has found deep expression through singing since early childhood. Growing up in northern California to the sounds of Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Patty Griffin, Iris Dement and Lucinda Williams, her music recalls the Laurel Canyon folk of the 1970s peppered with Brooklyn indie-folk grit. Both intimate and cerebral, Emily’s songs explore themes of catharsis, confronting the inner child, and the power of place and memory.
Her debut EP, ‘Nina’ will be released later this year.

When algorithms are decoding more music into homogeneous playlists, My Tree challenges this norm to bring music and people of disparate worlds together. Press from 2017’s full-length release After Glow described the music as “Seductive, interstellar funk” [Okayplayer] and an “experimental blend of indie rock, jazz, funk, and dream pop” [The Deli Magazine] with “the perfect mix of skill and energy to keep you hooked from start to finish” [Earmilk]. Featuring acclaimed alto-saxophonist and flutist Caroline Davis in a different role as a vocalist, and keyboardist Ben Hoffmann, this collaboration features songs that seek to uplift, while at the same time pointing to the current challenges we face in the United States. The project “Kate Birch” was launched two years ago in New York when – inspired by the city- the artist released the album “Sound Of The City” . Her second album “The Fool” is released in April 2022 with the swiss indie lable Red Brick Chapel.
Back in New York, Kate Birch continues to create performances and play songs using the violin, her voice and some electronic effects. The resulting effect is strikingly personal and esoteric, as experimental, classical, folk and indie pop genres mingle.

Seeded in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury, Ambrose Getz’s songs wind their way from the West Coast through Ohio’s rust belt farmlands to the flashing fire of New York City. Luck, lineage, and letters that never reach their destination find footing alongside characters from life and story.

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 Suggested Donation

Esthesis Quartet plays original music with a reckless abandon that shakes the preconceptions of traditional instrumentation roles. The group approaches collaboration with understanding, respect, and a brave commitment to spontaneity and sonic exploration. Esthesis, by definition, means elementary sensations of touch. This is in reference to the missed human contact collectively experienced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Esthesis Quartet was formed during this time, initially as a composition support group to keep the creative juices flowing via remote recording projects. When it felt safe to connect in person, we gathered in Los Angeles to perform and record this album.

Elsa Nilsson – Flute, Dawn Clement – Piano, Emma Dayhuff – Bass, Tina Raymond – Drums

Described as “an intrepid composer, architect of sound and beast of the bass…” (Brad Cohan, NYC Jazz Record) composer-bassist Max Johnson creates complex worlds of sound, challenging his listeners to engage deeply and be rewarded with an experience always crafted with love, care, and clarity. With nine albums and over two thousand concerts internationally with artists like Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson, Tyshawn Sorey, John Zorn, and Mivos Quartet, Johnson brings a wild energy and excitement. For this concert, Johnson will be presenting an exciting new quartet, featuring Alfredo Colon, Kazmende George, and Connor Parks performing new and revived works, imbued with an electrifying energy.

Anybody who has witnessed these or indeed any of Elvis Costello’s live shows will appreciate the special magic that occurs when Steve Nieve is let loose to solo on the piano.

Get to experience a full evening of this magic as Steve and his incredibly talented friend, vocalist and drummer Kessada, bring you “STORIES OF LOVE” and transport the Immobile Tour to your home town. After one hundred plus shows since the pandemic began, on Facebook and Instagram, you already know to expect the unexpected from this musical pair of lunatics. For “Stories of Love” you will hear songs and anecdotes around Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and others. Naturally, Kessada and Steve will also dig deep into their own growing catalogue of songs.

A great new concert to discover.

Exquisite Drones by Wick Simmons & Laurie Olinder // Gyan Riley May 21

    7:30 Door 8pm Show

    $18.00 advance / $20 at door

    https://www.venuepilot.co/events/55692/orders/new

Conceived and performed by Wick Simmons, Exquisite Drones is a work for cello, electronics with music composed by inti figgis-vizueta, Conrad Tao, and Jack McGuire, and with projections designed by Laurie Olinder.  Exquisite Drones takes its inspiration from the drawing game “Exquisite Corpse”, which was first played by surrealist artists to create bizarre and intuitive drawings. The collaborators here juxtapose drone compositions that were written in isolation by the three composers, each expressing their personal relationships to long-held tones with humming, growling, and de-contextualized words. Projections designed by award winning multimedia designer Laurie Olinder re-interpret the drone score and Wick’s cello lines to add a stunning visual component to the collaboration.

Gyan Riley is a one-man American-music machine, amicably ranging across the fields of jazz, world music, and post-minimalism.” (The New Yorker)  Gyan performs with Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, the Kronos Quartet, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Arooj Aftab, and and his father, the iconic composer Terry Riley.  “Beautiful and enigmatic”…”an alluringly intimate vibe created from the first note.” (The New York Times)

Diane Exavier is a writer, theatermaker and educator working at the intersection of performance and poetry. Her work has been presented with The New Group, BRIC Arts, The Bushwick Starr, Bowery Poetry Club, and more. Diane concerns herself with what she recognizes as the 4 L’s: love, loss, legacy, and land. Her book-length lyric, The Math of Saint Felix was recently published by The 3rd Thing Press. A 2021 Jerome Foundation Finalist, Diane lives and works in Brooklyn.  http://www.dianeexavier.live/who.

Daniel Kleederman’s music straddles two worlds: the bucolic, rural northeastern US, and the frantic cosmopolitan centers that blast out of these wildernesses. Kleederman grew up in Western Massachusetts before moving to New York City,  where he spent years as a sought-after musical voice on the guitar, most recently and notably as lead guitarist for indie rock powder keg Bartees Strange. After almost a decade in NYC, and before heading out on national tours with Strange and the band, he returned and reconnected to his childhood home and past during the pandemic, self-producing his debut solo EP Grand Kid to capture the spirit of this homecoming.

Tim Berne & Gregg Belisle-Chi / Burnt Ends May 28

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 Suggested Donation

Brooklyn native and stalwart of the creative music scene Tim Berne brings his powerhouse alto saxophone playing and relentless curiosity back to the Northwest, where he was first drawn to the power of R&B through the music of Julius Hemphill while attending Lewis & Clark College in the 1970s. Berne has been performing internationally since 1982 with various ensembles including Caos Totale, Fractured Fairy Tales, Bloodcount, and Snakeoil among others. He has made over 50 recordings as a leader for labels such as Soul Note, Sony, JMT, ECM, and Intakt Records. Through his collaborative approach to improvisation, his distinct angular and off-kilter melodies, catalog of compositions, and work as record producer at Screwgun Records, Berne has left an indelible mark on the modern jazz and creative music scenes.

Asian-American guitarist and composer, Gregg Belisle-Chi, will be touring the West Coast with the saxophonist in March. A graduate of Cornish College of the Arts, and now based in Brooklyn, Belisle-Chi embarks on a new collaboration with Berne on their debut duet record, Mars (Intakt Records). Belisle-Chi’s 2021 release on Relative Pitch Records, Koi, is Belisle-Chi’s solo acoustic guitar interpretations of ten Berne compositions, which were produced by David Torn and Berne himself. Described by the New York Times as “a subtle stunner,” his work draws from the spaces between the spiritual and the analytical, the ethereal and the tactile, inviting listeners to a place of pause and reflection; music that “oozes beauty both in concept and execution, making us luxuriate in its immersive sonorities” (Part-Time Audiophile). Berne and Belisle-Chi will perform works off the latest record during the second set of the night.

In the silhouette of a distant desert sunset, The Burnt Ends come into view. Riding travel-worn steeds with musical paraphernalia strapped across their backs, they traverse the sonic desert with steadfast resolve. Stopping from town to town channeling ancient spirits through the brass, wood and skins of their instruments, they play for the people. Hard-working people. People connected with the sun and the earth. People that hear the coyotes call in the night.

They came together from far and wide: California, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York and Germany. With a shared love of slow-cooked meat and the tales of heartache and wide-open spaces told by the songwriters of the old west, they knew they had an opportunity to create something special. Something that would transport people to a train crossing a snowbound canyon, or next to a fireplace in a creaky old rocking chair. They aim to help people forget about their troubles and dance to their driving rhythm and lush harmony.

So put on your snakeskin boots, pull a swig of grandpa’s cough medicine and stretch out under the prairie stars with The Burnt Ends.

Melissa Weikart record release with special guest Carmen Q. Rothwell June 2

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Melissa Weikart is a French/American vocalist, pianist, and composer originally from Boston, US, currently based in Strasbourg, FR. Her musical approach is shaped by her passion for experimental vocal harmony and formative training as a classical pianist. Melissa’s Here, There (out on Northern Spy Records, May 27th) features fraught reflections on devotion, obsession, and doubt, delivered naturalistically and matter-of-factly despite the complexity of the musical setting. Weikart keeps this frenetic energy well in hand, grounding her gorgeous and discomfiting songs with refrains with a pop appeal reminiscent of forebearers like Judee Sill and Fiona Apple.

Carmen Q. Rothwell is an upright bassist, songwriter and improviser living in Brooklyn, NY. With her 2020 solo debut recording, Don’t Get Comfy / Nowhere, Carmen “has created a unique work of art that is relatively experimental in its structure but musically seductive enough to win fans of all stripes” (Popmatters). “The album thrives on the meeting of reservation and vulnerability, and its songs feel as emotional and virtuosic as a power ballad yet are sparse and withholding as a Rembrandt” (Pitchfork). In addition to performing her solo songs regularly around NYC and elsewhere, Carmen is an active bass player in Brooklyn’s jazz/improvised, indie and experimental music scenes. She is one-third of the band Scree.

Martin Nevin / Michelle Willis June 5

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 Suggested Donation

Martin Nevin is a Brooklyn-based composer and bassist. He has performed and/or recorded with notable artists such as Albert “Tootie” Heath, Billy Hart, Greg Osby, Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ethan Iverson, and Aaron Parks, in venues across the U.S and abroad. Martin’s debut as a leader, Tenderness is Silent, was released in 2017. In that same year he was awarded a grant by the American Composers Forum to compose Scratch at the Same Table, a song cycle based on the poetry of Jonathan C. Creasy. Martin holds a B.M. from Manhattan School of Music and an M.A. from Columbia University.

Michelle Willis is a Canadian singer, songwriter and keyboard player based in New York City. She is a member of David Crosby & Sky Trails, David Crosby & Lighthouse, and the Becca Stevens Band.  As a kid growing up, singing and playing was a way of communication; a pathway to self expression. She later grew to learn the vocabulary of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s songwriters, a sound she has grown quite close to given her fixed position in two bands led by American songwriting folk legend David Crosby.  Since moving to New York, Willis has cemented her place as an in-demand keyboard player and singer, touring and recording with a diverse array of artists such as the aforementioned Crosby, Becca Stevens, Zac Brown Band, Iggy Pop, Laura Mvula and Michael McDonald. Taking her unique style and adapting it to a band’s sound has fed the melting pot of harmony and melody that defines her music.

Despite touring schedules that placed her on the road for 200+ days a year, Willis sought to finish a sophomore record to follow her full length debut, See Us Through, 2016. The new album, out now on GroundUp Music, is titled Just One Voice. It’s an ambitious studio record with a live and filmed concert that showcases eleven new songs and features guest performances by Crosby, Michael McDonald, Grégoire Maret, Becca Stevens, and Taylor Ashton.

Composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Karen Mantler returns to the stage with her collection of songs about the current times we live in. The Bird Calls / Katy Cruel / TJ Douglas June 10

    7:30

    $12.00 Suggested Donation

The Bird Calls is the recording project of Sam Sodomsky, a singer-songwriter and music journalist who lives in Brooklyn. In general, Sam tries his best to make good decisions, speak clearly, and keep to himself. Performing on nylon string guitar and recording using ancient laptop technology, he writes carefully and makes music quickly, sef-releasing a large number of albums through Bandcamp. The most recent of those albums, Tarot, was recently reissued in a handsome physical edition by the label Ruination Record Co.

Katy Cruel  is the solo project of New York based actress, artist and musician, Katy Pinke.  Under Katy Cruel Pinke writes impressionistic songs with incisive lyrics over clean, finger-picked guitar lines, focusing on interpersonal themes.

Beach Plum Tapes is proud to announce the release of TJ Douglas’ Lo 2.0, Douglas’ fourth full-length LP, following 2015’s Joey (“a tender meditation on youthful malaise” — Pitchfork) and 2017’s Our Lady Star of the Sea, Help and Protect Us (“an exercise in attentiveness… explores that dance between belief and nonbelief with earnest curiosity” — MTV News). Lo 2.0 is an album of deep personal reckonings, slow-burn intensity, and unforgettable honesty about what Douglas describes as “this war between meaning and meaninglessness.” It’s a bold step forward from their earlier releases as Tica Douglas, embracing the full prophetic potential of rock music while simultaneously tapping into a new sense of personal truth.

Matt Bachman / Katy Rea / Allegra Krieger June 11

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Matt Bachmann (b. 1988, Chicago) is a musician/composer/songwriter based in New York. Maybe best known for his bass plucking in Mega Bog, the Seattle-New York-anywhere fresh music nest of Erin Birgy, Matt’s also spent time on the road with Hand Habits, Happy You, and iji. Walking Preference is Bachmann’s most recent collection of passionate instrumentals, inhabiting an animated universe inspired by Miyazaki films and Nintendo fantasies — a world both natural and unreal. Air and space have been carefully manufactured. The playful drones and compositions within are full of bubbles and sharp turns while still adhering to the core tenets of Bachmann’s sound— that of beauty and space. Bachmann’s music is more sky than earth. Walking Preference zooms out.

Allegra Krieger is a New York based songwriter and composer. With emotive lyricism and explorative harmony, her songs are at once cathartic and compelling. She will be releasing her second album with Northern Spy Records, “Precious Thing” on March 4th 2022.
At the heart of this album is a young, working woman asking “Do you see this right now? I can’t be the only one.” This is an album about looking, and Krieger fills up each lonely space she enters with her gaze. Krieger asks you to look, to really, really look, so that you can remember something, however small it is, when it’s all gone.”
    – Melissa Lozada-Oliva

Katy coats important messages in velvet coated enchanting vocals and wonderful guitar.” -Atwood Mag
In the depths of making her own records, Katy put her savings into refurbishing an 80s 8 track reel to reel and has begun to record herself and friends out of Phil Weinrobe’s lower east side studio. Born in Houston, Texas, her mother sang Linda Ronstadt around the house and her father, a writer, played Leonard Cohen and Dylan. He would say, “you only need a few chords and the truth to write a good song.” But Katy took her time developing her truths and moved to New York for acting, where she found herself in other people’s stories. After working in tv and theatre, she drifted back to herself finding a home in songwriting. She set up her first U.S. solo tour, playing every dive and diy and soon after met her band. Back in Brooklyn, they recorded her debut LP live at Figure 8 Recording. Kind advice sought from Sam Evian and other industry friends has inspired her to learn the art of recording, thus becoming self reliant creatively. She engineered overdubs and mixed the album, leaning into the honest and soulful sounds that inspired her youth and brought her back to herself.

Ella Hohnen-Ford is inspired by jazz, folk and the great songwriters of the 20th century. Ella’s interest in a broad variety of styles has produced her unorthodox and genre-defying approach to writing and interpreting music.

Emma Frank is a songwriter and singer living in Brooklyn.  She describes her performances as Folk-Burlesque – no corporeal nudity, but revealing nonetheless.  Are they funny? Are they sad? Are they life-affirming? She sure hopes so.  Emma just recorded her fifth studio album with her incredible band and it’s going to come out soon.

Good Intentions is an instrumental rock band that grew up in the 90s and hasn’t gotten over it. Following the lead from their favorite singers, songwriters, and composers, the music is warm, direct, and just a little emo.

    Schlegelmilch Warren etc

In the spirit of reconnecting with old friends and with live audiences after the long pandemic lockdown, Brooklyn-based pianist and composer JP Schlegelmilch has assembled a new group featuring some of his longtime collaborators for a special northeast tour. The band features saxophonist Adam Schneit and drummer Max Goldman, JP’s bandmates from the Americana/Folk/Jazz group Old Time Musketry, which released two critically-acclaimed recordings and toured widely in the US; trumpeter and composer Kenny Warren (In the Heat Trio, Laila and Smitty, Slavic Soul Party), lap steel player Myk Freedman (The Mykfreedmans, The Sandcatchers); and electric bassist and composer Andrew Dow (Ressik).

Formed in 2008, the Danny Fox Trio, featuring pianist Danny Fox, bassist Chris van Voorst van Beest, and drummer Max Goldman, is a true working band hailed for reinventing the classic piano trio format with genre-defying, uniquely personal original music. Whether holed up in a Brooklyn basement rehearsing or touring around the country crammed into a sedan, the trio has spent countless hours developing a rapport that’s immediately palpable in their music.  Described as “cool, but not modish” (NY Times), the band mixes tight ensemble playing with highly interactive, attuned improvisation.  Drawing on influences as varied as Ellington, Bartok, and The Meters, the music can switch gears at any moment yet remains cohesive thanks to strong motivic development and rigorous arrangements that challenge the traditional roles of the piano trio instruments.  The trio is set to release its fourth album in the fall.

    $12.00 suggested donation

Charlie Burnham is a Brooklyn violin player who has had the wonderful good/bad fortune to earn a living playing music.  He has done this with the help of some famous people who hired him to play and record their beautiful songs.  These famous people include James Blood Ulmer, Henry Butler, Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Nora Jones and many others who I’m leaving out with apologies. It’s a particular joy for Burnham to be playing at the Owl because it’s located right between the two schools where he got some early music training; PS 92 on Parkside and Rogers, and Lefferts junior high on Empire.  Joining Charlie tonight will be Fred Cash (bs) and Kirk Knuffke (trpt)

Combining intimate jazz improvisation with cinematic melodies and rock-and-roll verve, DRINKING BIRD is a trio that draws from a liberally defined American Songbook to build a sound of its own. Comprising New Yorker Eladio Rojas on the drums, Norway-bred guitarist Jacob Matheus, and Pacific Northwest native Tree Palmedo on trumpet, the members of Drinking Bird have performed with folk singers, pop stars, rock bands, and a host of jazz greats. In addition to original material by its members, the trio tackles numerous jazz standards, country tunes, and pop songs reflective of the band’s eclectic taste; the sparse instrumentation lends a uniquely nuanced approach to Elliott Smith and Thelonious Monk alike. Several video projects and a debut album are in the works.

Lau Noah and The Tether Trio Jul 2

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Lau Noah (1994) is a Catalan self-taught composer, multi-instrumentalist and artist based in New York City.
Praised by distinguished musicians for the astounding counterpoint work, her unique approach to music composition has made her a sought after act for workshops and master-classes for several music conservatories and universities all over the world. In February 2019 Noah performed a Tiny Desk Concert making her the first Catalan to ever perform in the prestigious series.

The Tether Trio, Theo Bleckmann – vox / Timo Vollbrecht – sax / Ben Monder – guitar, derives its name from the intertwining of sonic landscapes and musical ideas that these 3, free-thinking, musicians merge into one. Together, Theo, Timo, and Ben weave together seamlessly intimate and delicate sonic textures into a highly personal and pastoral sound. By blending electronic and acoustic timbres, their music breathes and unfolds gradually and majestically. Theo Bleckmann and Ben Monder (both multiple Grammy-nominees and ECM recording artists) have a long-standing collaboration of performing and recording (in duo and other ensembles) for over 25 years. The prolific saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht is a perfect extension of their aesthetic and integrates electronics and sonic space as an equal player. They first found together to perform for the Fajr Music Festival in Iran. Theo remembers: “We were astonished by how closely tethered our musical ideas were right from the beginning, and how we often could not tell one voice apart from another. Our name is a tribute to the magic of this musical merging.”

Karen Mantler Trio / Chris Cochrane Trio / Felice Rosser Trio Jul 7

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Karen Mantler returns to the stage with her collection of songs about the current times we live in. Her distinctive voice and chromatic harmonica playing are featured in these tales of woe offset by her deadpan humor and bluntly elegant compositions. Set in a fascinating minimalist context, she is supported by Doug Wieselman on guitar and bass clarinet and Kato Hideki on bass.  She  is the daughter of jazz musicians Carla Bley and Michael Mantler.  As a songwriter and a bandleader, her style has attracted a world-class list of musicians to her band throughout the years, including Steven Bernstein, Eric Mingus, Hiram Bullock and Arturo O’Farrill.  As an instrumentalist and vocalist, Mantler has shared the stage with the likes of Terry Adams, Jack Bruce and Elvis Costello to name a few. (http://www.wattxtrawatt.com/)

Kato Hideki is a bassist, composer & producer. As a bassist, he has worked with Eyvind Kang, John King, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Christian Marclay, New York City Ballet, Billy Martin, Zeena Parkins, Marc Ribot, Nana Vasconcelos and John Zorn, among others.  (http://www.katohideki.com)

Doug Wieselman is a composer, arranger and musician. He co-leads Kamikaze Ground Crew who have recorded 5 albums as well as leading his own ensemble – Trio S with Jane Scarpantoni and Kenny Wollesen. As a musician, he worked with Hal Willner, Bill Frisell, Eyvind Kang, Robin Holcomb, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Steven Bernstein, Martha Wainwright, CocoRosie and John Lurie and the Lounge Lizards, among many others. (http://www.dougwieselman.com/)

    Chris Cochrane Trio with Sulynn

Chris has been playing guitar in and around NYC since 1982.

Sulynn Hago is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and instructor in rock, metal, classical, and improvisational music. In 2015 Hago was picked among 400 applicants as touring guitarist of Canadian band Propagandhi in which they still perform. Marlon Cherry is a multi-instrumentalist / composer who has worked with a variety of artists including Stew & The Negro Problem and the Stew side project, Baba Bibi, Eszter Balint, The Roches and others.

Appearing here with Marlon Cherry and Fin Hunt, Felice Rosser has formed a musical style, “Unlike virtually any other sound out there” (J. Lien – CMJ). “If Nina Simone had a power trio with a rock/soul and reggae flair, it would sound something like this” (Doug DeFalco, Talent Buyer).   Felice Rosser “Sings in a voice both plangent and wailing” (New York Times).  With sweet and powerful guitars from Nao Hakamada and funky polyrhythms from Fin Hunt, Faithnyc has developed an immensely colorful sound., “…tunes that are not rock, not funk, not r&b, so much as deeply soulful tone poems back by multiculti dream pop” (Village Voice).

Hermona / / Chris Conti / Grey McMurray Jul 8

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Hermona is an Ethiopian-American musician and songwriter from Washington, D.C., now based in Brooklyn NY. A classically trained pianist and multi-instrumentalist, her songwriting and performance is based in R&B but equally and seamlessly floats to folk, pop, funk, and alternative. She has performed in New York City at The Bitter End, DROM, and The Delancey.
Hermona’s current and forthcoming work is instrumental rooted in variations and syncopated layering. Her work explores through the act of composition and improvisation the belief that (creative) expression is a necessity to the self-actualization of one’s humanity. She will be an artist in residence this September at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

After several albums of acoustic based songs produced in a stark/lo-fi slant, Chris Conti’s growing explorations with tape loops led to his latest releases comprised of songs framed and inspired by this textural aesthetic. Tonight, he will be performing with a more improvisational approach to further dig into the existing material.

Guitarist, singer and producer Grey Mcmurray has been called “sublimely odd” (New York Magazine) and “the world’s least obtrusive guitarist” (The Guardian). He will release his first solo album on Figureight Records in summer 2019. He has performed/recorded with Gil-Scott Heron, Meshell Ndegeocello, Tyondai Braxton, Alarm Will Sound, Olga Bell, Skuli Sverrissonn, Ali Sethi, Theo Bleckmann, Beth Orton, ACME, Colin Stetson, So Percussion, Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Amidon and John Cale, among others. He is a co-leader of the trio Tongues in Trees with Samita Sinha and Sunny Jain, and of the duo itsnotyouitsme with Caleb Burhans, with four releases on New Amsterdam Records.  He hopes everyday to provoke joyful tears in strangers’ eyes.

This night curated by and features Dandy C. McDowell  (b o t),  a New York based multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and visual artist whose life-long obsession has been to investigate the boundlessness of emotion. With experience in the worlds of gospel, orchestral, and pop music, it has involuntarily become Dandy’s practice to create art that is heartfelt, appealing to the body, and at the same time, avoidant of easy categorization.  Their unique imagination for sonic possibility—realized in their personal project,  “b o t”—has brought them to work alongside such artists as Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange), Renata Zeiguer, Damon McMahon (Amen Dunes), and Kalmia Traver (Kalbells). In all of their work—collaborative and otherwise—Dandy aims to convey that the depth and breadth of emotion is limitless when accessed through sound and sight.

Brittany Ann Tranbaugh (pronounced TRAN-baw) is an award-winning singer/songwriter based in Philadelphia, PA. Originally from the Lehigh Valley area in PA, she kicked off her music career as a teenager playing at Godfrey Daniels, one of the country’s only remaining bona fide folk listening rooms. She has since performed all over the US and Canada in theaters, living rooms, basements, bars, coffee shops, backyards, and on festival stages including Firefly and Philly Folk Fest. Accolades include a 2021 Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song “Kiss You” and finalist spots in the Gems in the Rough, Kerrville New Folk, LEAF NewSong, and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artists competitions. In April 2022, she debuted an EP entitled “Quarter Life Crisis Haircut,” her first official release in over a decade. In this new batch of memorable and thoughtfully crafted songs, she tackles a wide range of topics including her sixth grade queer awakening, an awkward run-in with an old acquaintance, and the impossibility of true folk music authenticity in this day and age. At times witty and sarcastic, at other times heartbreaking and raw, the EP undoubtedly showcases Tranbaugh’s finest work to date.

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kyle Morgan grew up in central Pennsylvania, where he began writing his first album while bussing tables at the local Olive Garden. The name of that record, Starcrossed Losers, became the alias under which he would go on to release two more, Bind Us Anew and Strange Hesitations, each featuring his distinctive conglomeration of Americana styles, from stripped-down acoustic ballads and love-lorn parlor laments to roaring alt-country and throwback 60’s rock’n’roll. His latest album, Younger at Most Everything, was released in February on Team Love Records.

Ali Dineen is a poet-composer born and raised in Queens, whose lyrics are poetic and deeply personal, and highlight the intersections between personal experience, larger histories, and systems of power. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival, the American Folk Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival, among other wonderful venues, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. Ali released a third album, Hold On, in 2020, and is currently working on a new piece about Joan of Arc.

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

    $12.00 Suggested Donation

Since 2014, Eleanor Buckland has been one-third of Lula Wiles, the Boston-based folk-rock trio that has become an acoustic music scene favorite with their three critically hailed albums. Her own album You Don’t Have To Know spotlights a different side of Buckland’s musical interests as it sets her deeply personal songs against inventive indie rock arrangements. “Buckland’s folksy drawl plays perfectly with this fresh set of pop tunes that are seemingly built for fans of contemporary FM radio acts like Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift, both nostalgically rustic and immediately modern.” – WBUR

Alec Spiegelman is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer living in Brooklyn, NY. Lately, he’s produced albums for Ana Egge, The David Wax Museum, Taylor Ashton, Sadie Gustafson-Zook, Zoe Guigueno, and Dallas Ugly (sharing the bill this evening!) He’s a member of the band Cuddle Magic, who recently released a 6th full-length album (Bath), and are at work on a 7th. And he released his own debut full-length album, Airplane Mode, in the dark days of our first pandemic Autumn. He’ll be performing songs from that album, as well as newer material.

The music of Dallas Ugly shimmers with an iridescent nostalgia on their debut album, Watch Me Learn (produced by Alec Spiegleman). Built on a foundation of mellow interchanges of electric guitar and pedal steel, the rhythm and flow evoke an old-school country version of lofi hip hop radio. But combined with soaring fiddle and heartfelt vocals, it becomes something wholly new – a sound as unique as it is dreamy. Themes of change, loss, and growth, felt alongside the band members’ decade-long friendship, lend themselves naturally to the rolling country music vibes of their melodies and instrumentation. Together, Owen Burton, Eli Broxham, and Libby Weitnauer present a dreamy, last-call rendition of three chords and the truth. If you close your eyes, you can practically feel yourself slow dancing under the lazy orbit of a disco ball at midnight.

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

akie bermiss is affable, near-sighted, hirsute, and a nerd of the highest water. nevertheless, he has also somehow managed to cultivate and live a double-life as cool and *very* hip musician. his favorite thing to do is write (and, subsequently, sing) songs about aliens and spaceships and falling in love.

Belle-Skinner is a dark nostalgic singer-songwriter based in upstate New York and Brooklyn. With a hauntingly beautiful, lilting soprano and innate sense of melody she crafts tales of songbirds, sirens and desert nomads – nuanced and layered stories which bridge the gap between past and present. Though her influences cover a broad range of genres – from French chansons and Russian folk to contemporary alt-pop and rock – her voice often draws comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Mary Hopkin, and early St. Vincent.

Kirsten Maxwell is New York native, turned nomadic singer/songwriter. She got her start in the children’s chorus at the famed Amato Opera, where her parents met and performed. Although her cleverly poetic lyrics and heart centric performances have been celebrated in competitions and venues across the US, Maxwell is best loved for her voice. She was last seen touring with legendary singer/songwriter Judy Collins who calls Maxwell’s performances a “sheer joy”.

Vireo / Field Guides / Eliza Edens Aug 25

    Doors 7:30 Show 8:00

    $12.00 suggested donation

Vireo was born in 2015 out of band-lead Chris Beaulieu’s childhood home, the creative projection  of eight years spent with a band that was due for, but never got, their big break. Bringing together acoustic instrumentation, alternative percussion, and natural soundscapes, alongside lyrics rooted in themes of the natural world and human emotion, across all albums, Vireo’s intention is clear: create authentically.  Over the years, Vireo has released several homegrown recordings and collaborated with a community of artists in order to play in the Pittsburgh DIY scene and tour the east coast; Vireo is rooted in and represents the community that makes it a whole. With a lineup now consisting of Anthony Capozzi, Matt Hochberg and Suzanne Gomes, the gang is set to release their 4th LP, Moss Longing on August 19th.

Field Guides is the ever-shifting project of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Benedict Kupstas, accompanied by an expansive list of collaborators both on record and live. With Ginkgo, the band’s third album—after 2014’s Boo, Forever (which The Big Takeover called “sprawling, dense, and mysterious”) and 2019’s This Is Just A Place (which Gold Flake Paint called “one of the year’s most rewarding discoveries”)—Kupstas has created a “profoundly organic indie folk space” (PopMatters), a record “full of beautifully intricate details and crashing waves of melody” (For The Rabbits).

Edens is currently putting the finishing touches on a new sophomore album.  Her debut record Time Away From Time (2020) was called “… a mesmerizing 29 minutes of delicate finger picking and poetry in motion” by No Depression.

Festival Of New Trumpet Music:  Alexandra Ridout Trio / Sonny Singh Sept 8

    Sonny Singh:
    • Personnel: Sonny Singh (voc/tp/dhol), Jonathan Goldberger (g), Mackenzie Shivers (harmonium/keys/voc), Yuka Tadano (b), Rohin Khemani (dr/tabla)

    Alexandra Ridout Trio:

“The trio is a relatively new project which is collaborative in nature. We all have similar avenues of influence in the music we like and write, whilst each having our own unique input. The sound of trumpet in the drumless trio is fairly rare and we have worked on making a trio sound that resonates with us. The trumpet can be so versatile and this trio explores a lot of that. We play a mix of original music written specifically for this trio sound as well as some of our favourite music that we play in our own way”

Dead Gowns / Allegra Krieger / Little Mazarn /Sept 9

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

Dead Gowns is the project of Portland-Maine-based songwriter Geneviève Beaudoin. Her latest single is called ‘How You Act.’ It’s the first from a series of new recordings that New Commute says will “turn the head of any Whitney or Cate Le Bon enthusiast” and For the Rabbits calls “the sound of a songwriter coming good on all her promises and then some.”

    www.instagram.com/voila_deadgowns/

The music of Little Mazarn is a cool float a few feet from the ground through a dimly lit, almost familiar forest. It is quieter than silence, big as everything, still but always moving. If you’ve ever had flying dreams, or an amazing night time bike ride on LSD, this might be a world for you. Chords are made up of notes; Little Mazarn gives them all their own moment. There are NO superfluous notes played here. Lindsey’s kind and twisting voice ambles along over the spare sounds of Jeff Johnston’s saw bowing, Ralph White’s electric mbira wanderings, and her own slow banjo. Like DJ Screw, Bohren & Der Club of Gore, and anyone who chooses to walk instead of ride, Lindsey realizes the amazing power of slow… slow… slow music. Lindsey is at once a baby and a wise old man. Get in this canoe at dawn on some Texas river that remembers when Comanche slept under the stars.

William Alexander, Brittain Ashford, Adam Lytle

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show Sept 10

Coming fresh off of a national tour supporting Mndsgn – Brooklyn based singer songwriter William Alexander deconstructs his self produced songtape “The Uncut Tree” through the lens of thoughtful, acoustic soul.

While Brittain Ashford has spent much of her career recording and touring in support of her original music, her unlikely appearance in the Broadway musical The Great Comet of 1812 took her a slightly different direction. Lin-Manuel Miranda once suggested that she could sing while he wept into a bucket and The New York Times said that she should have been nominated for a Tony. She will be performing songs from her forthcoming album, Trotter.

Adam Lytle is an American singer-songwriter known for his work with the band Quicksilver Daydream. A technician of the sacred, his songs paint symbolic landscapes, conjuring worlds that vibrate between the hallucinatory and nostalgic.

Michael Bates’ Acrobat / ALTA String Quartet Sept 15

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Acrobat, the quintet led by bassist/composer Michael Bates, features five fearless voices exploring one of music’s most mysterious personalities, Dmitri Shostakovich.  With literal themes by Shostakovich or themes composed with his spirit, “Acrobat” is full of music that is playful yet dark and swinging.  And while Shostakovich is clearly being channeled, the voices of these five fantastic improvisers will be on full display: Beautiful and vicious, elegant and dissonant, and humor laced with serene sarcasm.

    (With Marty Ehrlich,clarinet; Mazz Swift,violin; Sara Schoenbeck,bassoon; Michael Sarin,drums)

The ALTA String Quartet present radically different explorations of two dissident composers: Dmitri Shostakovich and Witold Lutoslawski.   This is music filled with hidden messages mocking a regime that willfully crushed people. With the war continuing in Ukraine, this is timely and vital music.

Marcellus Hall and the Hostages / Chris Maxwell

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

    $12.00 suggested donation

As a singer-songwriter Marcellus Hall has recorded with bands Railroad Jerk and White Hassle and has toured the US, Europe, and Japan. He continues to make music under his own name. The First Line was recorded with accompanying musicians and released on Glacial Pace Recordings in 2011. Afterglow was recorded and released with The Hostages (Damon Smith, Mike Shapiro, and Troy Fannin) via Bandcamp in 2013. Hall is at work on an, as yet untitled, album of new material. If it’s awesome, awe-inspiring, hip-shaking, intellectual, harmonica-tinged, heart-wrenching, tales of love and redemption you want, then look no further. Marcellus Hall’s new sound echoes his previous stints in Railroad Jerk and White Hassle, but takes it to another level. A level where all other bands blush in embarrassment. Questions?

Chris Maxwell made his name playing perhaps the furthest thing from wistful Americana — in the ’90s, he made catchy, jagged junkyard rock with the legendary New York band Skeleton Key. Before that, he was the principal songwriter and clever guitarist of Little Rock, Arkansas’ first band to be signed to a major label, the Gunbunnies, whose Southern Gothic jangle the L.A. Times characterized “…as if the Beatles met Faulkner on E Street.” These days, Maxwell works out of his new Goat House Studio in Woodstock, where he composes and records music for hit TV shows like Bob’s Burgers and Inside Amy Schumer, as well as having produced and written music for other artists (They Might Be Giants, Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) as part of the celebrated production team The Elegant Too.

“Chris Maxwell musically channels the heart of Americana-pop — Big Star, Freedy Johnston, Wilco and the like — in crafting a song-cycle as personal as home movies with X-rays included. A beautifully poised grown-up album in an age that still coughs one up from time to time.” — Jonathan Lethem

Anni Rossi / Katy Cruel/ Jae Soto Sept 17

    7:30 Doors 8pm Show

Anni Rossi is a songwriter, comedic performer and multi-instrumentalist from Minnesota based in Brooklyn. Her work draws from the natural landscape within and has been called “experiential folk”. She often plays hybrid electric viola-tars built out of tree branches by collaborator Thor Harris (Swans).

Katy Cruel is the solo project of New York based musician, actor, and artist Katy Pinke.

Jae Soto is the solo moniker of Brooklyn-based vocalist and producer Justina Soto. Initially trained as a vocalist, she studied modern production independently, and later developed into a self-described “computer musician”. Influenced by artists like Japanese producer Haruomi Hosono, American composers like John Cage and Steve Reich, and 80s synth-pop icons, she often uses a blend of experimental micro-sampling, multi-fx hardware, and synthesis to transform her sounds. While creating, Soto listens to her surroundings and places those abstractions into a familiar context, often using topically diverse lyrics and delivering a sardonic yet holistic view of her experiences.

    b o t with Maxi / María Argel / NIIKA & Syl DuBenion Sept 18

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Maximillion “Maxi” Hawkeye Canion (They/Them) is a Non-binary Queer Black & Latinx solo movement artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Desert raised & originally from El Paso, TX, they graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). As a freelancer, they have worked with Sidra Bell, UNA Productions, slowdanger, Annie Rigney, Kayla Farrish, BIRDHOUSE, Lior Lazarof & Fernando Melo. They attended Springboard Danse Montreal In 2019. They are also a certified Dance Church instructor and Reiki practitioner. Maxi has been pursuing a call to heal others and a desire to provide aid through bodywork to people in the Black Community as well as Black Queer/Trans/Non-Binary artists, organizers and activists.

María Argel is a writer and poet originally from Montelíbano, Colombia.  Most essential to her process is the poetic nature of the unusual—the fact that the world does not express itself so clearly in genre or form. She is currently writing her first novel and a collection of poems that are variations on themes of adolescence, the multi-dimensionality of the femme, and the unnamed shapes of time, which she believes are at the heart of the poetry in everything.

Syl DuBenion is a 31 y/o black American, born and raised in Buffalo, NY. He holds a love for water, art, and friends, while sharing his huge imagination, an infinity for color, and distrust of constructs via his modes of creativity.

NIIKA, conceived and fronted by Russian-born Chicago-raised Nika Nemirovsky (guitar and voice), is an effervescent blend of intimate indie, soul, and jazz-tinged folk. Drawing upon the creative ethos of artists like Lhasa De Sela, Kate Bush, and The Dirty Projectors, her writing defies categorization and instead draws people in with an unwavering mystery. After releasing her first full-length album in March of 2020 which featured a full band, and sonically expansive arrangements, NIIKA shifted gears somewhat. Her new body of work, created with a stripped back performance in mind, reflects much of what sets her work apart- a sound that is distinctly, undeniably her own.

She is currently in the process of putting the finishing touches on her third release, an EP titled “Still a Soft One,” slated to be released this winter, with production assistance from Vivian McConnell (V.V. Lightbody) and Chicago avant jazz guitarist, Dave Miller. “Nemirovsky makes big music from a small space. From her hands, even only guitar and voice can perform the most mosaic duet, waltzing back and forth with one another in a dance that conveys not only playful novelty, but also an honest and undeniable heartache.” -Lyrah Fosl, Former Staff Contributor at Tiny Mix Tapes

Dandy C. McDowell (b o t) is a New York based multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and visual artist whose life-long obsession has been to investigate the boundlessness of emotion. With experience in the worlds of gospel, orchestral, and pop music, it has involuntarily become Dandy’s practice to create art that is heartfelt, appealing to the body, and at the same time, avoidant of easy categorization.

Their unique imagination for sonic possibility—realized in their personal project,

“b o t”—has brought them to work alongside such artists as Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange), Renata Zeiguer, Damon McMahon (Amen Dunes), and Kalmia Traver (Kalbells). In all of their work—collaborative and otherwise—Dandy aims to convey that the depth and breadth of emotion is limitless when accessed through sound and sight.

Taylor Ashton with Katie Martucci Sept 28

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show

    https://www.venuepilot.co/events/61774/orders/new

Taylor Ashton is a Canadian singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn. He spent the first half of his twenties on the road across Canada as frontman of the band Fish & Bird before moving to New York to work on a new set of songs and a new chapter of life. His music takes influence from the cosmic emotionality of Joni Mitchell, the sage vulnerability of Bill Withers, the humour and heartbreak of Randy Newman, and old-time and Celtic folk music. Alternately accompanying himself on clawhammer banjo and electric guitar, Taylor croons poignantly clever lyrical insights while effortlessly gliding between a Bill Callahan-esque baritone to a Thom Yorke-like falsetto.

His full-length debut album The Romantic was released in early 2020, followed by a companion EP “Romanticize” featuring remixes, reimaginings, and new songs. His songwriting appears on albums by Watkins Family Hour, the Brother Brothers, Benjamin Lazar Davis and others, and he has released singles with Aoife O’Donovan, The Fretless, and Aerialists, as well as a moody acoustic duo record in 2018 with songwriter & guitarist Courtney Hartman. Much is in store for 2022, including at least one new album and more fruitful collaborations.

Katie Martucci is a performer (singer, guitarist & violinist), bandleader, composer and teacher living in Brooklyn, NY. Since graduating from the New England Conservatory in 2016, Katie has toured the United States with her trio The Ladles, founded the Tucci Swing Orchestra, released several solo recordings, and scored the National Geographic film ‘Glen Canyon Rediscovered’. Katie has taught voice and songwriting at SUNY New Paltz, and leads several ensembles at the Jalopy School of Music in Brooklyn.

Dorée is a NYC based singer-songwriter whose work combines alternative pop, folk, classical & jazz. She’s taking a gap year from New England Conservatory to write, perform, and develop her craft. With an all original repertoire, Dorée has played in NYC & Boston at The Bitter End, Piano’s Lounge & The Corner Art Room. She is working at Big Orange Sheep Recording Studio in Industry City, Brooklyn

Jay Gandhi’s music is a reflection of an eclectic array of musical influences and years of training under the inimitable legend of the bansuri, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is a world traveling performer, educator and a founding member of the Brooklyn Raga Massive, a groundbreaking NYC musicians collective.

Jay has been immersed in Hindustani classical music from his childhood, beginning with vocal training under Smt. Kum Kum Sanyal and bansuri training from Pt. Tree Palmedo, Oropendola, Wood River, Sept 30

    7:30 Doors 8:00 Show

Tree Palmedo is a Brooklyn-based musician and an eager collaborator in the worlds of jazz, free music, pop, and indie rock. As a trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist, he has recorded and performed with an eclectic cast of musicians including avant-pop orchestra Tredici Bacci, singer-songwriter Ben Zaidi, Oscar-nominated songwriter Joshuah Brian Campbell, and acclaimed indie rock bands like The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Mild High Club, and Sloppy Jane. Tree’s contemporary jazz quartet project Earprint received four stars in Downbeat and was named #1 debut album on the NPR Jazz Critic’s Poll. He has also released work as a singer-songwriter with the band Peaceful Faces. He plays regularly in the Brooklyn bands Tredici Bacci and Drinking Bird .

Wood River is a Brooklyn based band lead by multi instrumentalist Charlotte Greve.
Expect back beats, through composed melodies, enigmatic lyrics and grooves, bathed in swirling synths, alto saxophone, electric bass and guitars – Music that is as un-categorizable as the musicians are versatile. A captivating blend of jazz, ambient and rock music with a rarely heard compositional rigour.

Oropendola is the effervescent lyrical chamber-pop project of Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter & musician Joanna Schubert. The oropendola is a gregarious bird native to South and Central America ~ a feathery friend who enjoys a good silly swing on a branch. A golden pendulum. A call that conjures water droplets cascading and trickling through the air, only to suddenly crash upon a rocky shore… of figurative sorts.  With a knack for emotional and whimsical storytelling and colorful arrangements, a distinct chameleon-like voice that loves the song-speak, and a tendency towards the musically delicious and unpredictable, Oropendola chases through various genres with a playful theatricality and indie sensibility.  Influences range from and are not limited to: eclectic forces like Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and Joanna Newsom; the melodic and chaotic arrangements of Sufjan Stevens and Of Montreal; French Impressionist piano music; musical theater; the proggiest of The Beatles and the most melodic of Prog; the 90s/early aughts pop, R&B, and pop-punk.

    Sylvester Germaine-electric bass • Jonathan Goldberger-guitar • Luke Marrantz-fender rhodes • Jeff Davis-drums
Playing original compositions by each member of the band, this is a group with connections that go back many years through many formations. Catchy melodies, vamps, and free explorations are some of the musical elements that can be expected.

My Tree is an eclectic musical collaboration that straddles the boundaries of R&B, indie rock, and jazz. When algorithms are decoding more music into homogeneous playlists, My Tree challenges this norm to bring music and people of disparate worlds together. Their latest release, Where The Grace Is (2021), is a “well-intentioned, slow-burn rumination on the gripes of American social and economical plight, brimming with bops bulked-up on heavy instrumentation” {Flood Magazine]. Their sound has been described as “Seductive, interstellar funk” [Okayplayer] and an “experimental blend of indie rock, jazz, funk, and dream pop” [The Deli Magazine] with “the perfect mix of skill and energy to keep you hooked from start to finish” [Earmilk]. Featuring acclaimed alto-saxophonist and flutist Caroline Davis in a different role as a vocalist, and keyboardist Ben Hoffmann, this collaboration features songs that seek to uplift, while at the same time pointing to the current challenges we face in the United States. My Tree is the soundtrack for the inevitable ushering in of the new world order.

Trippers & Askers is the folk / spiritual jazz project of musician, sound artist, educator and researcher Jay Hammond. The group’s latest album Acorn takes inspiration from Octavia Butler’s immersive and frighteningly prescient novel Parable of the Sower. As an intertextual work, Acorn brings together a wide array of collaborators that include members of Wye Oak, Califone, former Sun Ra member Ken Moshesh and comic artist John Jennings to explore the book’s narrative as it pertains to the very real political and emotional challenges of the present. The album was called “a shimmering homage to nature” by The Guardian. For this performance at The Owl, Hammond will perform solo with likely special guests and new material.

No Lands is the recording project of Brooklyn-based songwriter and audio engineer Michael Hammond. The debut No Lands album Negative Space was called “one of the most thrilling headphone experiences of this year” [Tome to the Weather Machine] and named the best electronic album of the year by the Brooklyn Rail. Strugglin / Scree With Horns Oct 21

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Brooklyn’s Justin Felton (Strugglin’) devised “Pitch Pine” as the first documentation of a new identity, to explore a fresh way of writing and recording music. He would wake up in the morning between April and June last year, and improvise using different tools in an attempt to capture a “semi-lucid” flow of sound. When he walked to work, he would collect artifacts from his route and record them as voice memos; later on, he’d collage these sounds using an SP-404, and dub the sounds to cassette, “subconsciously allowing the chance sound connections to follow new rhythmic modes and surprise their maker.”

The result of the experiment is a series of sketchy ideas and dream forms that occupy a space between the bone dry minimalism of Mille Plateaux and the dusty sample-based collage of Los Angeles’ Madlib and Dilla inspired beat scene.

Scree is an instrumental trio featuring Ryan El-Solh on guitar, Carmen Rothwell on bass and Jason Burger on drums. Their music draws inspiration from the Jazz, European Classical and Arabic musical traditions  For this performance they will be joined by an expanded lineup of bass clarinet (Kristina Teuschler, Greg Sinibaldi) clarinet (Ivan Arteaga) and trombone (Willem de Koch) to perform a set of music inspired by the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish

Jordan Glenn/ Katie Jacobson/ Michael Rocketship Movie Oct 28

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Katie Jacobson is a human girl from New York City interested in the use of words, humor and
visual narratives in music performance. Some of her past work includes The Aging Piece: a
punk rock reflection on the passage of time, The Mirror: A piece about narcissism sung on roller
skates, and Honey Noble’s Last Show Ever: an multi-discipline, multi-room meta-exploration of
the many identities of the lead singer of a band. Katie is currently reading a book by Will
MacAskill called “What We Owe The Future” and has two cats named Micho and Pacha. Right
    now she has “long” hair.

On this night, the 28th of October, Katie will play vocals, Robby Bowen will play drums, Michael
Coleman will play keys, Ivan Arteaga will play woodwinds, and Carmen Rothwell will play bass.
Sierra Hendrix and Katie will be co-directing movement and visual story-telling for the
performance. Some themes might include: quiet and silence, care pedagogy, teleology at the
mall, Michael Coleman, exposition of an event, what we hate about gigs, cereal = soup of the
morning, effective altruism, and not knowing much of anything about outer space.

Oakland based drummer Jordan Glenn has worked closely with Fred Frith (FF Trio, Gravity Band), William Winant, Zeena Parkins (The Adorables), Roscoe Mitchell, Ben Goldberg, Todd Sickafoose, John Schott, Lisa Mezzacappa, Kyle Bruckmann, Michael Coleman, Matthew Welch and bands Jack O’ The Clock, Secret Chiefs 3, The Rova Sax Quartet, tUnE-yArDs and the collective Sifter with Rob Ewing, Beth Schenck and Lisa Mezzacappa. He composes/conducts the large, percussion heavy band BEAK, and since 2007 has led the sax/drum trio Wiener Kids. He also has been commissioned to create scores for evening-length dance pieces by Sharp & Fine and Liss Fain Dance. His solo work distills what he values most… spontaneity, space, texture and groove. A document of this work can be heard on his first solo recording “Flustered”, released this past May on Full Spectrum Records. For this performance he will be highlighting some home-constructed instruments in conjunction with the traditional drum set and acquired junk.

Michael Rocketship is a Brooklyn native who works in a variety of musical settings, as an improviser/composer and recording engineer/producer. He’s worked with a wide array of artists from Chris Cohen to Kenny Wollesen and enjoys finding himself in surprising musical situations. For his latest project, he’s teamed up with legendary weirdo SNEAL to co-write an album of songs. The process was this: SNEAL would send lyrics in the form of a text to Michael and Michael would compose to the words. Once complete, they decided that it might be fun to create a visual element to accompany the music. They set out to create a feature film and ended up with a series of short videos that fit together and create a special feeling.

Morley and Chris Bruce create global, earthy, ethereal stories in praise of courage, vulnerability, resistance, dignity and love. Joined by bassist Ross Gallagher.

Westchester singer and guitarist Peter Cole from Lava Baby, along with Brooklyn bassist Byron Isaacs from The Lumineers and Ollabelle, are the duo Lost Leaders. Their new EP Jealous Sun is their most personal effort yet, exploring falls from grace, disability, fatherhood and ego. They both write tunes and trade main vocal duties, and their spot-on harmonies weave the weird magic that has won them radio success with songs such as “Long Way Down,” “I’m Gonna Win” and “Volunteer.”

Oren 0’Blivion is a sucker for the slow, sad and spacious; enjoys the eerie, emotional and evanescent; incidentally, he itches after the  intimate, intelligent and instinctual.

Miles Hewitt / Jana Horn / Andrew Daly Frank Nov 12

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Miles Hewitt is a musician and poet residing in Brooklyn. His debut full-length, Heartfall, arrived in August 2022 and was hailed by The Boston Globe as “A simply brilliant debut record . . . by turns intimate and epic.” A dark green dream of life and death, it features an all-star cast, including members of the bands of Devendra Banhart, Aldous Harding, Kevin Morby, and more.

Jana Horn writes: “Optimism seemed to come about indirectly, almost in passing, a feeling of being in-between things. I was really mobile at that time, living wherever. Half the songs came through in a week. “Jordan” perhaps the most out of the blue… sitting there as I was on my brother’s couch in Austin. But I guess I don’t think that anything comes from nowhere. Everything is writing to me. A grad professor once told me that masturbation is writing, as long as you’re looking out a window.  I had just discovered, late, Raymond Carver Broadcast, Sibylle Baier (which “Tonight” is more or less dedicated to), Annette Peacock, Richard & Linda Thompson, a short story called “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” by Denis Johnson. I had “Heart Needs a Home” in mind, “The Great Valerio;” I was just really moving through the world, hanging in the shadows of the people I wanted to be. Hoping, looking out, this is Optimism. I was looking for anything.  In 2018, I took these ten songs into a studio in Austin with some members of the band Knife in the Water. I’d been singing with them at the time and it felt right. My friend Ian, who I’d been performing with as a duo for a few years, was with me on drums. “Friends Again” and “Jordan” were written in the process. “Jordan” was such an outlier, I thought: I can’t put this on the album. Then at some point in the recording process, decided to embrace it—the question of whether spiritual themes should be a part of my work—which wouldn’t even be a question now. It’s in everything. But at the time, you know, it was the first time, and so the song kind of scared me, like I was a mule for it instead of its owner.”

Andrew Daly Frank is a guitarist and songwriter based in Philadelphia, PA. He performs in the Charlie Kaplan Band and in various improvisation-focused ensembles, and crafts lush guitar pop in his home studio. His debut full-length album is forthcoming in 2023.

Born and raised in rural Massachusetts and currently living in Brooklyn, NY, Eliza Edens weaves together disparate influences of people and place into her work to create mesmerizing sonic tapestries with guitar and voice. Edens released her sophomore album We’ll Become the Flowers on October 14th.

Dirty Bird hails from the concrete woodlands of New York City, and consists of Christie Woods-Lucas, Melissa Escudero, Natasha Thweatt, Nick Katz, Eli Greenhoe, and Blake Suben. Each member has spent his or her life grounded in music. With roots going back to New York’s renowned arts school LaGuardia High School, the members of Dirty Bird reconnected in 2016 and in true New York style bring a wide variety of musical backgrounds—from jazz to bluegrass to classical—together in one vibrant and wholly original folk sound. Dirty Bird brings both new and long-devoted audiences intimate, poetic lyrics charged by three-part harmony and lively, distinct arrangements. Soulful, harmonious, and ever-evolving, Dirty Bird’s music redefines what it means to be a folk band.

Foreshadow is a shadow puppetry company that hurtles through space and time with four hands, a manual overhead projector, and original scores. Forged in the flames of middle school friendship and polished during the pandemic, Foreshadow is the love child of Rosalind Lilly and Gaby FeBland, two lifelong Brooklynites and theatremakers. The duo has performed at venues such as Dixon Place, Jalopy Theatre, and the 2022 Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Isaac Gillespie, Eamon Fogarty, Larkin Grimm Nov 27

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Emerging from the antifolk scene of the late 2000’s, Isaac Gillespie is a NY-based songwriter, performer and man-about-town. Blending folk-song storytelling with the energy of punk and the elasticity of gospel, theGillespie-fronted The Due Diligence was a mainstay of 2010’s Brooklyn DIY.

Eamon Fogarty is a singer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from New Hampshire. His songs, often cryptic and candid in equal measure, conjure the contradictions and disjunctures of history, ideology, and language that animate American life. He has appeared on recordings alongside Will Stratton, Matt Kivel, and Psychic Temple in collaboration with The Dream Syndicate. His sound was once described by Michael Krassner (leader of Chicago experimental collective Boxhead Ensemble) as “Timbre of Scott Walker with the harmonic sense of Robert Wyatt.” He currently lives in Austin TX.

Larkin Grimm is a singer and songwriter of dramatic, Appalachian folk-influenced indie fare that’s difficult to label but consistently idiosyncratic. With production by Tony Visconti, Soul Retrieval arrived via Bad Bitch Records in 2012. She was picked up by Northern Spy for her fifth full-length. Featuring Visconti on bass and a breezier tone than her prior works, Chasing an Illusion was captured live in a recording space in Gowanus, Brooklyn and released in 2017.

Jess Nolan, Jean Rohe, Maya de Vitry Dec 11

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Singer/songwriter Jess Nolan is an old soul channeling a diverse palate of creative forces. A skilled keyboardist, poet, and painter hailing from small-town New Jersey, she gained quick momentum when she moved to Nashville and won Lightning 100 and BMI’s fan-voted Music City Big Break competition. Jess is a frequent community collaborator and can be found writing, recording or onstage with an array of artists including Jenny Lewis, Joy Oladokun, Katie Pruitt and more. Since 2018, she’s mentored for the non-profit Girls Write Nashville which aims to cultivate empowered expression and a positive, safe space for teen girls. Jess’s debut album, From Blue to Gold, is available everywhere now and serves as a timeless reminder that through the convergence of intuition, skill, and community, there is an undeniable beauty in art that honestly reflects the human experience. “She reminds me of a modern-day Carole King.” – Ana Lee, WMOT Roots Radio

Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the wider forces that shape their lives. Her work spans evening-long concept shows to participatory, impromptu street protest tunes, and is both personal and timely, the product of nearly two decades of practice in New York’s wide-ranging music, art, and activist communities.

Born and raised in Lancaster, PA, Maya de Vitry first traveled and performed as a fiddling street musician, and then in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds. Now based in Nashville, TN, her musical heart is anchored in a deep love of song-makers like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, emotive vocalists like Nine Simone and Bonnie Raitt, and the traditional music of Southern Appalachia.  With Joel Timmons – guitar, vocals; Shelby Means – bass, percussion, vocals; Charlie Muench – bass, banjo, vocals and Jason Burger – drums, vocals

Nino Soberin / Dig Nitty / Katy Rea Dec 16

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

Nino Soberin is an experimental cellist and composer from Texas who has performed and written for several acts of varying styles including collaborations with members of Balmorhea, Swans, Xiu Xiu, Molly Burch, and others. They live in Philadelphia where they sell culinary mushrooms at the farmer’s market on the weekend.

Dig Nitty is warm, warbly, angular music – songs written by Erin McGrath and played with Adam Brisbin, Bernardo Ochoa, Mikey Buishas and friends.

Katy Rea’s debut album, The Urge That Saves You was recorded entirely live in Brooklyn. The empath rock, hook-filled record provides plenty to cling to all while splitting off into cinematic, dark psychedelia. The seamless shifts transpire masterfully, a unique mark of Rea’s talents. Her lead vocal is intense, melodic, and endlessly dynamic. This coupled with the touching restraint of the talented musicians joining her who’ve played with the likes of Angel Olsen, Fleet Foxes, Widowspeak, and more makes for a timeless collection of what Rea calls “premonitions, prayers, and warnings.” She is inspired to continue engineering and producing future albums on her own. In ways, The Urge That Saves You sounds to Rea like a Katy who was meeting herself for the first time.

Katie Von Schleicher is a songwriter, producer & engineer whose fuzzy offbeat pop has been described by The Guardian as “Portishead meets the Beatles.” Of her 2020 album Consummation, Pitchfork wrote: “with virtuosic arrangements and cavernous production flourishes, the Brooklyn songwriter’s second full-length is an ambitious record that miraculously does not feel like it’s taking on too much.” She lives in Brooklyn with her bird, Ursula, who will appear on an unannounced 2023 LP.

    Maria A. Argel Guerra •Elora • Otracami Dec 30

    7:30 Door 8:00 Show $12.00 suggested donation

María Argel (1993) grew up in Montelíbano, a town in the Colombian Caribbean Coast. She studied Literature in Bogotá and is now attending a Master in Creative Writing in Spanish at New York University. She writes poetry and fiction and is currently working on her first novel: a coming of age of a young woman searching for the story of a suicidal actress of the 70s. She is also working on a group of poems based on female characters in movies.

As Otracami, Brooklyn-based songwriter Camila Ortiz leans into storytelling and atmosphere, crafting intimately spiraling narratives and producing with an ear for landscape and shifting space. Otracami’s world is moody and mystical: somewhere between craggy California landscapes, glassy shores, and dim bedrooms, the world glitches into moments of magic and nightmare. Otracami is currently at work on her debut album, touching the stove coil, due 2023.

From the outskirts of New York City, Elora moved to Brooklyn during her undergrad with her partner Theo Walentiny (pianist, composer, producer). The two began producing Elora’s songs in 2020 while sharing an apartment with no doors in quarantine. The lack of privacy brought them closer, learning how to collaborate through being stuck inside together, resulting in a sound that represents both of their own styles. Theo’s dreamy sound design and Elora’s grounding guitar playing create a warm canvas where the songs feel as alive as the experiences from which they were written.
