    Sara Schoenbeck/Wayne Horviz: Cell Walk

The pair operates here at the midpoint between chamber music and jazz, performing spare and often disarmingly lovely compositions that flow into free-roaming yet hyper-attuned improvisation, sometimes accented by subtle electronics. Recorded in summer 2019 and January of this year, this is music of otherworldly calm, filled with purposeful pauses, and built around the balletic coordination of two musicians sharing the same space. Put another way, it’s the sonic antithesis of 2020 — a memento from a simpler, more connected time. – Hank Shteamer Rolling StoneRay

One of the seminal figures of the 1980s New York ‘Downtown’ scene, Bobby Previte has received multiple awards including the 2015 Greenfield Prize for Music and a 2012 Guggenheim.  From his instrument, the drums, Previte has led a plethora of ensembles worldwide for forty years. “He can break your heart with one cymbal crash.”

Named five straight years as best trombonist in the DownBeat Critics Poll and declared “the most exciting slide brass player of his generation” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, Ray Anderson has led a daunting assortment of tradition-minded and experimental groups, big bands, blues and funk projects and even a trombone quartet.  On a series of acclaimed recordings, he has ranged from Ellingtonia and jazz classics to striking originals.

This is their first duo concert.
