     Julia Easterlin

Michael Mayo is quickly becoming one of the foremost vocalists and vocal improvisers on the scene today. He began forging his musical identity long before he hit the stage. The son of two successful musicians, the Los Angeles native grew up just a little more than 20 feet from the likes of Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. This proximity helped Michael create a musical path centered around the innovative elements of neo-soul, R&B and jazz. Since relocating to New York in 2017 he’s worked with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Kneebody, Gretchen Parlato, Nate Smith, Ben Wendel, Becca Stevens, and Theo Bleckmann among many others. His debut album Bones (released June 2021) takes its musical cue not from skeletal remains, as much as the foundation of a house, providing a firm base for Mayo’s flights to higher ground. Each of the songs represents a learning experience for Mayo, the building blocks — the “bones” that made him the person he is today. With Bones, Michael Mayo turns the ideas in his head into a full-fledged sonic universe that reflects an upbringing surrounded by music, and the freedom he has fought so hard to achieve in his work and life. Whether performing with a rhythm section, a full big band or alone with a looper pedal, Mayo’s honest vocal style commands the attention of listeners worldwide.

Julia Easterlin is an American singer, songwriter, loop artist and baritone ukulelist whose music draws from elements of world-beat, chamber-pop, folk and contemporary classical music. She has collaborated with artists Vieux Farka Touré, Bill T. Jones, Kris Bowers, Bobby McFerrin, among many others. She has also worked as a co-writer and contributing vocalist with Mason Jar Music for The New York Times. Her early work entails extensive use of a BOSS RC-50 loop pedal to compose and perform wide-ranging a’capella music for a single voice. She departed from this style briefly in 2015 with the release of Touristes, her collaborative project with Malian guitarist and singer Vieux Farka Touré. In 2017, Easterlin set her loop pedal aside indefinitely to release her first full-length solo album: an acoustic chamber-pop work Light of a Strange Day,under the moniker Hite. The album was produced by Shahzad Ismaily and Charles Van Kirk and released to critical acclaim. In 2019, Easterlin joined the touring ensemble for dream-pop artist Barrie as a bassist and background vocalist. She continues to work as a bassist and vocalist in addition to performing her own work.

For this Dec. 10 performance at The Owl, she’ll be joined by bassist Martin Nevin.
