Julia Easterlin / Innov Gnawa Jan 4

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Julia Easterlin (born March 14, 1989) is an American singer, songwriter and baritone ukulelist whose music draws from elements of world-beat, chamber-pop, folk and contemporary classical music.

She has collaborated with artists Vieux Farka Touré, Bill T. Jones, Kris Bowers, Shahzad Ismaily, Bobby McFerrin, and Alex Toth of Rubblebucket, among many others. She has also worked as a co-writer and contributing vocalist with Mason Jar Music for The New York Times.  Her early work entails extensive use of a BOSS RC-50 loop pedal to compose and perform wide-ranging a’capella music for a single voice. She departed from this style briefly in 2015 with the release of Touristes, her collaborative project with Malian guitarist and singer Vieux Farka Touré.

In 2017, Easterlin set her loop pedal aside indefinitely to release her first full-length solo album: an acoustic chamber-pop work Light of a Strange Day, under the moniker Hite. The album was produced by Shahzad Ismaily and Charles Van Kirk and released to critical acclaim.[1] In 2019, Easterlin joined the touring ensemble for dream-pop artist Barrie as a bassist and background vocalist. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Innov Gnawa is a Grammy-nominated musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable Gnawa music tradition in the heart of NYC. Formed in the summer of 2014, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, A Maalem, or master Gnawan musician, originally from Fez, Morocco. Ben Jaafer is accompanied by Amino Belyamani and Ahmed Jeriouda, along with a brotherhood of guest musicians, all playing the karkabas, metal castanets whose staccato sound is said to represent the shackles and chains of slaves.

Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer, Innov Gnawa has delved deep into the roots and rituals of Gnawan music and has made a big splash in NYC, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl, and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbes. Innov Gnawa has also collaborated and shared the stage with such luminaries as Bonobo and Antibalas.

Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the “5 Bands You Need to Know” in Brooklyn’s Arabic music scene, Innov Gnawa make great use of a traditional repertoire and add their own contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. This exciting new outfit fuses a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of NYC.

Acrobat, the quintet led by bassist/composer Michael Bates, features five fearless voices sharing a passionate commitment to creativity and artistic beauty.  Here, the quintet explores one of music’s most mysterious personalities, Dmitri Shostakovich.  With literal themes by Shostakovich or themes composed with his spirit, “Acrobat” is full of music that is playful yet dark and swinging.  And while Shostakovich is clearly being channeled, the voices of these five fantastic improvisers will be on full display: Beautiful and vicious, elegant and dissonant, and humor laced with serene sarcasm.

Foster-Powell is a triangular neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, which sprang up around the construction of Portland’s electric street car line in the 1890s. Meanwhile, Foster Powell is an indie rock band based in Boston. They sing from the gut and shoot from the hip. Their songs are astonishingly true, and hearty, and occasionally sound like lost Beatles cuts. Foster Powell, Amy Anders, and Daniel O’Connor met at Bennington College and in the fall of 2018 formed a formidable trio of electric guitar, octave “fiddle bass”, drum kit (as played by a classical percussionist), and vocal harmonies. Carling Berkhout (Carling & Will, Surplus Daughters) has since joined on lead guitar.

Belle-Skinner is a dark nostalgic singer-songwriter based in upstate New York and Brooklyn. With a hauntingly beautiful, lilting soprano and innate sense of melody she crafts tales of songbirds, sirens and desert nomads – nuanced and layered stories which bridge the gap between past and present. Though her influences cover a broad range of genres – from French chansons and Russian folk to contemporary alt-pop and rock – her voice often draws comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, and Lana Del Rey. Opening for acts such as Mitski, Sean Rowe, Bill Ryder-Jones (Arctic Monkeys), Saint Saviour (Groove Armada) and Heather Maloney, she has performed at venerated venues and festivals including The Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Roundhouse Theatre in London. “A hidden treasure…Belle-Skinner reflects the deepest flaws and the greatest beauties of human nature within her music, which is both charming and chilling, and a simple joy to listen to.” -The Wild Honey Pie

    belle-skinner.com

“When jazz was born it was exciting and made us laugh and cry. Jazz should be the most relatable of music because it is pure human improvisation being broadcasted in real time. Our goal with this group is to not recreate the past but to explore it and mix it with the future. I want to use our original music to create that theme.” – Sweet Megg Sweet Megg has been lighting stages around the across the eastern United States for the past 4 years. Her enthusiasm and honesty cuts straight through to the heart as she seamlessly transitions from an energetic Western Swing number to a melancholic French waltz. Sweet Megg was born and bred in New York City but her sound reaches far beyond the confines of Manhattan. Her voice is exceptional and is colored with the vast variety of influences she holds dear including Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and Bessie Smith. Her recent excursions outside of the US were a huge success and she is now building up a following not only in New York, Nashville, Asheville, and other Eastern cities but also in cities like Moscow, Paris, Montpelier, and Kaliningrad. Her newest record comes out February 7th on Dala Records, a local Brooklyn record company. Her music is steeped in many traditional American musical styles but also allows for influence from the present era. Her music is American to the core in that it is ever evolving and reflecting the changes surrounding it.

Lau Noah, Ambrose Getz & Emma Frank Feb 1

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Ambrose Getz is the project of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Caroline Getz. Seeded in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury, Getz’s songs wind their way from the West Coast through Ohio’s rust belt farmlands to the flashing fire of New York City. Luck, lineage, and letters that never reach their destination find footing alongside characters from life and story.

Emma Frank is a Brooklyn based songwriter. She has released four albums of original music. Her latest release, Come Back, came out on Justin Time Records in fall 2019, and featured pianist Aaron Parks and producer/guitarist Franky Rousseau. “The slightly tart tunes are complemented by literate lyrics that, nevertheless, cut to the center of the heart, addressing romance as poetry and yearning. Given that Frank and Parks manage to find original hooks amidst their mixture of songcraft and jazz, these love songs feel like they should be radio hits in some new era of grown-up pop music. Perhaps that’s asking way too much of today’s pop audience, but the music is good enough to work a miracle or two. Why not that one?” (Will Layman, PopMatters)

Lau Noah’s musical tapestry is a conversation between masterful storytelling, intertwined cultures and a limitless sense of imagination that provide the audience with the capacity to time-travel between their child self and the being they will become when the last song of the show comes to an end.

Grey McMurray /Briars of North America Feb 5

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

“The Briars of North America are excited to be performing new and slightly-used music in anticipation of our new album to be released in May 2019!  We’ll be diving deeper into newer songs and visiting some old classics as well.

The Briars of North America is a futuristic-chamber-folk group that find inspiration from both traditional and experimental sounds — shape note singing, old-timey string music, etc., and weirder free jazz, new classical, and electronic music.  We call the band “post-americana” because it reflects a desire to return to a life of simplicity, a way to reorganize human relations outside the context of apocalyptic capitalism, an affirmation of one of our mentor’s sayings: “Simplicity is the new wealth.”

Members of the Briars have played with Neutral Milk Hotel, Steve Coleman, Meredith Monk, The National, Becca Stevens, Jim Black, Steve Reich, and Helmut Lachenmann (to name a few).  Formed in Brooklyn, NY in 2008, the Briars is the brainchild of second cousins Jeremy Thal and Gideon Crevoshay, and quickly grew to include bassist Greg Chudzik, guitarist Simon Jermyn and drummer Tommy Crane.  Our first album “Orisis” was recorded in a drafty third floor apartment in Hudson NY and has found a small but devoted audience in the greater Columbia County area. The album reached a wider audience when we played an opening slot for Jeff Mangum’s solo tour in early 2013, and were described as “hushed chamber folk with classical precision and exquisite harmonies”, “pensive, existential, and thought-provoking”, and “Christian” (although the band is led by agnostic Jews).”

Guitarist, singer and producer Grey Mcmurray has been called “sublimely odd”(New York Magazine), and “the world’s least obtrusive guitarist”(The Guardian).  He released his first solo album on Shahzad Ismaily’s Figureight Records in September 2019.   He has performed/recorded with Gil-Scott Heron, Meshell Ndegeocello, Tyondai Braxton, Alarm Will Sound, Du Yun, Ali Sethi, Beth Orton, Colin Stetson, So Percussion, Samita Sinha, Sam Amidon and John Cale among others.  He’s a member of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, 6G with Greg Fox and M. Geddes Gengras, Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East, and of the duo itsnotyouitsme with Caleb Burhans, with four releases on New Amsterdam Records.  He hopes everyday to provoke joyful tears in strangers’ eyes.

The New Yorker takes a long look at love, desire and all the closed-fisted miles the heart has to travel by itself before it can finally open.” – Alex Green, Caught in the Carousel

Drinking Bird, Julia Easterlin and Adam Schatz Feb 8

    7:30 doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Combining intimate jazz improvisation with cinematic melodies and rock-and-roll verve, DRINKING BIRD is a trio that draws from a liberally defined American Songbook to build a sound of its own. Comprising New Yorker Eladio Rojas on the drums, Norway-bred guitarist Jacob Matheus, and Pacific Northwest native Tree Palmedo on trumpet, the members of Drinking Bird have also performed with folk singers, rock bands, and a host of jazz greats.  In addition to original material by its members, the trio tackles numerous jazz standards, country tunes, and pop songs reflective of the band’s eclectic taste; the sparse instrumentation lends a uniquely nuanced approach to Elliott Smith and Thelonious Monk alike. Several video projects and a debut album are in the works.

Julia Easterlin is one part Bjork, one part Regina Spektor, one part loop scientist; a sophisticated musical mind that can wield composition, production, and soaring performance in one fell swoop. Her music is majestic yet delicate, beautiful and brooding.

Adam Schatz does too much at once and often likes it that way. As a song-writer and performer, he leads the band Landlady, who have released three records, and toured around the world to audiences very small and reasonably large. They’ve performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series and been acclaimed by publications you’ve heard of, and plenty of other’s who’ve since gone out of business. He plays saxophone and keyboards at shows and records for people who ask him nicely, such as Sylvan Esso, Hand Habits, Japanese Breakfast, Man Man, Those Darlins, Adia Victoria, This Is The Kit, Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, and more.

As an person who burns himself, he bakes sourdough bread and has a secret recipe for apple cider donuts.

His efforts landed him on the front page of the New York Times arts as other esteemed new outlets such as German Public Radio and the Wall Street Journal. He followed soon after with ‘Bach Store: Variation One’ in July 2019 in Wall Street to similar success. Mr. Shinners has been invited to open a ‘Bach Store’ in Eisenach, Germany, town of Bach’s birth, in February 2020.  His alter ego, “WTF Bach” releases unique original compositions and short films. His avant-garde incorporations of Bach into social media (SnapChat and Instagram), were featured in an art gallery during Bushwick open studios in 2016. ‘Bang on a Can’ declared his electronic music, “Better than Coffee.”

Caroline’s third album, Heart Tonic, was released on Sunnyside Records to much acclaim in NPR, the New York Times, and DownBeat. Xanthoria Quartet, Ben Katz, harpsichord & Lacy Rose Feb 13

    7:30 doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Xanthoria Quartet was founded in early 2019 by kindred musical spirits Kate Goddard, Abby Swidler, Hannah Selin and Alexandra Jones. The four met as freelancers in New York, playing music ranging wildly in style from contemporary classical music, to baroque music, to music by indie bands and singer-songwriters. As a quartet, they share a commitment to bringing music of many genres to life with vivacity and color. In 2019, Xanthoria Quartet worked with the Brooklyn Composers Collective to record an album of new compositions; played with singer-songwriter Leah Shaw in the premiere of her forthcoming album, Play Beautifully; and recorded an original film score by composer Jessica DiMari. The group also performed a program of “story-within-a-story” quartets by Janacek, Glass and Josquin at Brooklyn College in May 2019. In February 2020, the quartet will premiere new compositions by its own Swidler and Selin alongside reimagined vocal works by Josquin, Gesualdo and De Rore.

Harpsichordist Ben Katz is fascinated by the similarities between 17th and 18th century improvisation-based compositions and their relationship to contemporary musical forms. The tension between text and interpretation is baked in to all the music that Katz is drawn to. His program at the Owl Music Parlor on 2/13 presents pieces newly composed for him as well as his own transcriptions.

Lacy Rose is a lyric poet, classically trained vocalist, and composer living in New York City. As a creator of neoclassical art songs, Lacy regales her audience with tales of myth, magic, tragic and eternal love, performing regularly with her Starling Quartet. She is currently adapting Clarice Lispector’s novel The Passion According to GH into an opera with director Dara Malina as well composing a piece entitled Lispector, a song cycle devoted to the author’s glamorous, complicated, and radical life and works. “You don’t understand music: you hear it. So hear me with your whole body.” CL ⭐️ Lacyrosemusic.com

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Eliana Glass & Micah Thomas            Alyssa McDoom & Evan Wright

Eliana and her family moved to Seattle in 2000 where she began singing at a very young age. Currently based in New York, Eliana continues to pursue her passions of music, visual art and writing, continuously gaining insight into each medium through the other. Eliana finds the voice is unlike any other medium of expression because it goes straight to the essential. Where in many art forms we are constantly trying to “find our voice”, with singing there is no mediator. This is an important part of her music and artistic expression.

Alyssa is a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Alyssa creates music informed from her greatest influences folk music, 60’s soul and reggae. Looking up to artists like Joan Baez, The Supremes, The Delfonics, and Alton Ellis, Alyssa mixes her folky voice and compositions with arrangements and sounds reminiscent of the 60s and 70s. Heavily inspired by producer arrangers of that period like Burt Bacharach and the Holland- Dozier Holland, she produces her music with a love for analog and warm textured arrangements that normally include her playing an old nylon guitar and organ.

tadzio is an ensemble of Philadelphia/D.C. based musicians who share an interest in creating evocative sonic landscapes that blend warm acoustic tones (harp, piano, flute, percussion) with electronic instrumentation with an uneasy lushness that recalls both the soaring verticality of a symphony hall and the distorted hum of a basement noise show.

Nicomo are the songs and spaces of Nico Osborne, with a band of the hands and hearts of Duncan Standish and Gerard Marcus. Views through windows and fields recorded, shadows and conversations misunderstood, sounds through walls, opaque reflections.

The Pointless Forest plays Harry Nilsson’s “The POINT!”

The POINT! follows Oblio, a round headed boy growing up in The Land of Point, a town where everyone and everything must, by law, have a point. When he and his dog Arrow are banished for breaking the Law of the Land they must find out for themselves what the Point really is.  Our version of The Point! is a tribute of our admiration to the film, the music, and the man himself: Harry Nilsson. To us, The Point! represents the most concentrated examples of what makes Nilsson Nilsson as well as the pinnacle of George Tipton’s inspired and original arrangements of Nilsson’s songs.

He’s a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and performs as a sideman and performer with the legendary “Losers Lounge” series at Joe’s Pub (2014 onward). Joanna Sternberg is a 28-year-old singer, songwriter, musician and visual artist born/based in New York City.  When Joanna was 2, their parents overheard them humming the entire melody to “Oh What A Merry Christmas Day” from Mickey’s Christmas Carol at their passover seder.  They sent Joanna to piano lessons when they turned 5.  Joanna taught themself how to play the guitar and electric bass when they were 11. Joanna attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art.  They started studying double bass during their freshman year.  Joanna got a full scholarship to Mannes College of Music, and studied classical double bass there for a year and a half.  Joanna decided to leave the school and take a year off.  During that year they did nothing but stay in their room and draw comics.  Joanna has been a freelance musician and visual artist since they were 18-years-old.  Joanna finished their double bass performance degree at The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, where they got a full scholarship.  When Joanna was 23, they began writing songs and learning how to sing.  At the age of 24 Joanna started singing in public while accompanying themself on different instruments. Today, Joanna continues to write songs, sing, play instruments, and create visual art.  Joanna does not like using genres to describe music or art.   They also do not like using the word music to describe music, or the word art to describe art.

Miriam Elhajli is a Venezuelan-Moroccan-American composer and vocalist whose work is influenced strongly by the folkloric musics of South and North America, modern jazz, and contemporary classical music.

    CHARLOTTE JACOBS
    https://charlottejacobsmusic.com
Charlotte’s musical expression washes over you like waves, and she has been riding those waves for as long as she can remember. Inspired by her travels, from Nepal to Lithuania, throughout Africa and combined with her Northern European roots, Charlotte’s songwriting is eccentric as she merges experimental and abstract qualities with pop elements. She lets strands of Eastern classical, Scandinavian sound, and Intelligent Dance Music leap in, resulting in innovative songs perfect for her acrobatic and beautiful voice.
Her art pop projects include top notch musicians and producers from the worlds of improvised music, synth pop, contemporary classical music, EDM, dance and video.
In her newest EP, Fishtale – out May 31, 2019 and recorded in Brooklyn – she combines her quirkiness with more familiar song formats that best describe this collection as avant pop.
Her designs for these songs began in her bedroom, where she shapes sounds using the instrument of her voice as the primary source of textural samples and loops, fusing this with an electronic synth palette. She then joined forces with producer and engineer Zubin Hensler, who has collaborated with Half Waif, the Westerlies and Hannah Epperson.

Paul Spring, Kate Mattison of 79.5, Grandkid & Belle-Skinner Feb 29

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Paul Spring is an instrumental guitarist and songwriter from Minnesota, who currently resides in Brooklyn. Playing primarily nylon string acoustic guitar, and occasionally 12 string, he relies upon carefully arranged fingerpicking parts as the foundational voice of his music. He has released 6 full length albums and an EP since 2013. His latest, Neptune, is a mix of instrumentals and songs played on 7 string nylon with minimal drum machine accompaniment. It’s lyrics explore the concept of submersion, and were influenced by David Lynch’s book ‘Catching the Big Fish’, which frequently uses the metaphor of diving to illuminate exploration of the deep and dark sea which pervades our imagination.

    www.paulspringmusic.com

Attempting to pigeonhole 79.5 into something as narrow as a single genre would be an ill advised, if not impossible task. The New York City band sounds like someone spinning a radio dial with such passionate intensity that all the stations blend together into a single, transcendent, almost spiritual force. It’s disco to the beat of modern house; it’s a Supremes cover of a Cardi B banger; it’s Roland Kirk playing jazz through one saxophone, funk through another, and the most earwormy pop tune the 1970’s could muster through a third. It’s an experience—one so effecting that with only a self-released 12” single in circulation, 79.5 had been written up twice in The New Yorker on the merit of their live sets alone. Their debut album Predictions is produced by Leon Michels and was recorded at The Diamond Mine in Queens the old school way, with the whole band playing the songs in one take and captured to analog tape.

Grand Kid is the dynamic post-americana project of singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Kleederman.  By virtue of the conversation between his voice and the voice of his guitar, Grand Kid tells the story of the everyday-hero’s journey of letting go and growing up, often traveling from intense intimacy to explosive psychedelia while making many stops in between.

Though her influences cover a broad range of genres – from French chansons and Russian folk to contemporary alt-pop and rock – her voice often draws comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, Angel Olsen, and Lana Del Rey.

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Georgia Sackler is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor living in Brooklyn, New York. Creating at the crossroads of nostalgia-steeped tradition and hopeful promise, her classical voice background informs a deep musical and poetic sensitivity, a “fresh air of song writing.”  Her debut EP, Where Once Grew Green, is a modern folk tale. It offers listeners a tender memorial of youth and innocence, paired with an emotional thesis for the future. Georgia wrestles with the passage of time—facing loss, grief, and mental health struggles—and upholds that we need not suffer these things alone. The narrative she crafts is undeniably melancholic, but woven together with threads of hope; where once grew green will again renew. The EP is available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Matt Siffert is an experimental songwriter. He seeks to merge his love of folk-influenced storytelling with his training in jazz and classical music. He has released seven albums as a solo artist and performs music tonight from his upcoming release, “The Magic of the New.”

    Sebastien Ammann / Simon Jermyn

    7:30 Doors $10.00 Suggested Donation

Sebastien Ammann’s Color Wheel celebrates the release of “Resilience” (Skirl Records, 2020), their second album on Skirl Records.

The band creates a world of sound in the moment that is continuously in movement, looking simultaneously to the past and to the future. Sebastien Ammann’s compositions are vessels that enable the musicians to embark on a journey that takes the listener to new, yet familiar places.  While well rooted in improvised music, jazz and classical music, the music recalls at times, Ornette Coleman with the quartet’s quicksilver unison lines, Cecil Taylor through the group’s sheer energy and sonic density or Anton Webern’s serial or abstract compositions. Sebastien Ammann writes polychromatic compositions that not only blur the lines between composition and improvisation, but leave ample space for the band to create it’s own collective narrative.

Sebastien Ammann is the leader of Sebastien Ammann’s Color Wheel since 2012.
The band features some of New York’s most interesting and fearless improvisers, saxophonist Michaël Attias (Renku, Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian), bassist Noah Garabedian (Ralph Alessi, Ravi Coltrane, Andrew D’Angelo) and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell (Michael Formanek, Dave Douglas, Brass Against).  Since arriving in New York in 2008, Sebastien Ammann has collaborated with such musicians and projects as Kris Davis’ Massive Thread, Tony Malaby, Gene Ess’ Fractal Attraction, Nick Biello Sextet, The Russ Flynn’s Large Ensemble, Le Zhang Quintet, Michael Bates, Jon Irabagon, Mark Ferber, George Schuller, Dana Leong, Billy Drewes, John Hébert, Samuel Blaser, Sean Conly, Michael Sarin and many others, performing in venues and festivals all over the USA and Europe.

She continues her pursuit in finding ways to create songs where abstraction and improvisation can coexist. “Those stories sound like tales drifting out of a dream land: untethered to time and place, free-flowing and graceful, strikingly pretty, sometimes spooky, and starkly rendered.” (Dan McClenaghan – All About Jazz)

Singer and guitarist Ilusha Tsinadze was born in Soviet-era Georgia and emigrated with his family to the U.S. at the age of 8, where his musical upbringing consisted of punk rock, jazz and American folk tunes. Playing traditional Georgian songs in new arrangements on electric guitar and electronics, along with bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Aynsley Powell, Ilusha’s music is a true expression of a contemporary multicultural identity.

With his improvising trio Aggregat, E# on saxophone reveals a deep familiarity with jazz history and practice but also dives headlong into a futuristic approach, shredding tradition while acknowledging it. Aggregat’s rhythm section of Brad Jones on bass and Brian Chase on drums is powerful and supple ranging from solid swing to skittering high-velcoity textures.

Charlie Burnham will be joined by two of Brooklyn’s finest, Dom Richards on bass, and Sameer Gupta on percussion.  The trio will play songs from the past, present, and elsewhere.

Allegra Krieger: A contemporary folk singer, songwriter, tree planter, art model, waitress, and cave dweller inspired by a life lived transiently and freely; with songs regarding her travels and the relations that have come and gone within them.  http://allegrakriegermusic.com

Two Vermonters, two New Yorkers, one quartet. Rob, Dana, Michael and Tony met in the pit of the show Hadestown when it was off-Broadway. Music as pastoral and gritty as their respective homes.

Violin player and composer Dana Lyn inhabits a musical world somewhere in the Venn diagram of 70’s art rock, classical, traditional Irish and improvised music; this evening, her sextet Mother Octopus presents a suite of music inspired by the life and work of visual artist Jay DeFeo, and in particular, the creation story of her one-ton painting, “The Rose.”

Robinson & Rohe is the duo of Brooklyn songwriters Liam Robinson (banjo, accordion, vocals) & Jean Rohe (guitar, vocals).

After a touring hiatus this past year, during which Liam music directed the smash hit Broadway musical, Hadestown, and Jean released Sisterly, an award-winning record of her own, Robinson & Rohe anticipate the release of Wait & See in late 2020. This record builds on the keen-eyed writing and impeccable duo singing of their debut record, Hunger.

“Zoe Boekbinder opens [their] mouth, and the voice that comes out is ageless, beautiful, heartbreaking and wise. Zoe looks so young, and so innocent. I think [they] kidnapped a marvellous singer from long ago Paris, and stole her voice. It’s the only explanation.” – Neil Gaiman.

“I took a break from touring because I felt unsure that it was what I should be doing. I didn’t make an album for four years. I barely played any shows. I’d been a full-time musician for my entire adult life – so this was a big deal for me. After working in prison, I started to doubt that the songs I wrote were important to the world. During this break I discovered a bravery, that I hadn’t had before, to write songs about issues outside of myself. I wrote about feminism/violence against women, privilege, and prison abolition. I wrote about my best friend who committed suicide. My songs started to feel important. This album is the least and most personal art I’ve ever made. It feels terrifyingly vulnerable.”  Zoe resides in New Orleans, Louisiana. Some of their favorite collaborators over the years have been; Ani DiFranco, Amanda Palmer, Jason Webley, Neil Gaiman, Mal Blum, and Mirah.

Robbie Pollock is a singer/songwriter raised in East New York, Brooklyn, and South Jamaica, Queens. After almost a decade in prison, Robbie is now a teaching artist with Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections reentry program, a board member of Musicambia, an organization that teaches music in prisons around the country, and the producer of an annual anthology of award winning writing from prison with PEN America. Since returning home in 2016, Robbie has performed at Carnegie Hall twice, Global Citizen, community performances, and numerous fundraising events for arts programming in prisons.

ruby is a Brooklyn-based free-folk duo made up of violinist/composer/singer abby swidler and singer/composer kim mayo. Brought together by friendship, a shared passion for collaboration, a deep love for lyric-writing, and an experimental approach to the composing and recording process, ruby was officially born when abby and kim challenged each other to fully write and arrange one song each day for a week, which culminated in creating a piece collaboratively on their last day. Through this process, in getting to peek so intimately into each other’s songwriting instincts, and in turning their own and each others’ songs over in their hands like the stone they’re named for, they realized that their musical sensibilities complemented each other, and that they wanted to keep exploring songwriting together.

Their week of writing every day together birthed the seed for a collection of songs that they are preparing for their first recording, which they plan to release early 2020

Jesse in Grey sings songs that ruminate on lost time, alternate endings, and the internal dialogue of a truly bored midwesterner.

DPCD is the work of Illinois musician Alec Watson. Embracing the American song tradition with quiet intensity, the music contains warm repetitions on family, daily routine, and memory.  DPCD released their first album, “Good Visions,” in 2017.  Their second album, “False Virtue,” was released October 4, 2019.

Lina Tullgren is a Queens guitar player, singer and writer . They make songs with 4 releases of varying sizes out in the world to date: an EP of sparse solo music, 2 full lengths of rock band music and a 7″ of electronic pop songs written with friend and collaborator NTHNL . It’s music that feels simultaneously gigantic and miniscule, quiet and loud; these songs are small attempts to understand the chaos of existence, to quiet the constant buzz in ones head .

    JEAN ROHE

A sure-footed singer-songwriter,” in the words of The New York Times, Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the internal world as with the external. She is perhaps best known for her aspirational alternative national anthem, Arise! Arise!, which has now been performed by countless artists and choirs across the country. Her latest record, Sisterly, is a collection of songs about communication and its failures, and tackles topics from love, lust, and longing to prisons, police violence, migration, and home. It was the recipient of the 2019 Independent Music Award for best adult contemporary album. She is currently at work on a new record, Wait & See, with Robinson & Rohe, her songwriting duo with Liam Robinson. She is an artist with the Lullaby Project and teaches songwriting in the Future Music Project at Carnegie Hall. www.jeanrohe.com

    Estar Cohen – Endings

Sarah Elizabeth Charles (vocalist) first began writing music to Maya Angelou’s poetry in 2016 after being commissioned to write a new work by The Catskill Jazz Factory. Angelou’s writing, performing and identity as a prolific artist has had an influence on Charles since she was very young and continues to have an effect on her today. This musical work has developed overtime and now exists as an opportunity for Charles and her collaborator in performance, Jordan Peters (guitarist), to delve into Angelou’s creative world and to combine it with their own. Historically, Angelou’s poetry has been under celebrated and not widely regarded or known. With this project, Charles utilizes her multi-faceted identity as a musician rooted in jazz, folklore, hymns, soul and blues to celebrate Angelou’s imaginative, profound and historically relevant poetry in an explorative creative space.

    Estar Cohen Quintet

Estar Cohen – Voice, Alex Levine – Guitar, Lex Korten – Piano, Ben Rolston – Bass, Lesley Mok – Drums

Estar Cohen is an award-winning vocalist, lyricist, composer, and educator from Toledo, OH and currently based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her ensemble is dedicated to performing original music that reflects an exploration in poetry, composition, and the deep curiosity of the stories that define us. Cohen’s sound as a composer is rooted in thoughtful songwriting and spirited improvisation, highlighting the unique voices in each project’s configuration.

In 2018, Cohen received the ASCAP Foundation’s Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award for her piece, “Endings,” and was invited to lead her band at the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. Cohen has continued to build momentum with an array of performances, releases, and honorable distinctions; opening for the legendary Sheila Jordan as an up and coming artist on the acclaimed Vocal Mania series in NYC, receiving honorable mentions in the 2019 and 2020 New York Youth Symphony Series for her pieces, “Only Once,” and “For Tad,” being selected to present at the 2019 International Symposium of Jazz Arrangers and Composers in Colorado, and receiving press from outlets including NextBop and ASCAP, among others.

In their music Relatives blend the dissonant tonalities of the 20th century with the unadorned folk songs of Appalachia. The group was created in New York City in 2007 by Ian Davis, Katie Vogel and Gabriel Gall. Together they self-released two EPs, They Love You Well (2009) and Tardy Mark (2011), and put out a full-length album, The Relatives  (2011), on the Museum People label. In the fall of 2011, Gall left the group and Vogel and Davis reconfigured with Ross Edwards. Relatives writes and performs both as a duo/trio as well as a full-band ensemble, often incorporating winds, strings, horns, and additional singers into their music. In 2013 they signed with MDR, an independent, Cork-based record label who put out their most recent EP; The Signs That Mock Me As I Go.

Jeff Taylor is a singer-songwriter based in Jersey City. A little while back, Jeff released a four song EP, “Organelle.”  He has recently completed recording on his first full length solo record.  These recordings will feature a rhythm section of Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, St. Vincent) and Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Margaret Glaspy).  Jeff frequently appears with Mark Guiliana‘s Beat Music.  In 2018, Jeff worked with saxophonist Donny McCaslin (David Bowie’s “Blackstar” band) to co-write and record his latest LP, “Blow.”  With the rest of Donny’s band, they toured around the world throughout 2018-19 for the album’s release.  Jeff also appeared on Donny’s previous album, “Beyond Now,” singing a cover of David Bowie’s “A Small Plot of Land”. Earlier in 2018, Marike van Dijk‘s “The Stereography Project” was released featuring arrangements of Jeff’s songs for a 12-piece wind and string ensemble.

New York-based singer-songwriter Emma Frank was born and raised outside of Boston, before moving to Montreal in 2006 to study literature at McGill University. Whilst there she began performing regularly, releasing two critically acclaimed albums under her own name on the Montreal-based label, The 270 Sessions and performing vocals and brass with art-pop ensembles She’s Got a Habit and Malcolm Sailor’s Songs.

After coming to New York in 2015 to perform in Franky Rousseau and Dominic Mekky’s chamber opera, April, Emma decided to move to Brooklyn. It was there she forged her own unique sound, blending elements of folk, R&B, and even jazz to create shifting tempos and winding melodies.

Following the success of her critically acclaimed 2018 release, Ocean Av, Emma returned this year with the new album Come Back. Here she describes each song in turn, revealing a record made with love, lust, self-doubt, commitment and sadness…
